KHSAA Dead Period extended by Diocese of Covington for its schools

Featured Replies

Bravo. I personally feel the entire month of June, or half of June and half of July, should be a dead period. What the KHSAA allows coaches to get away with is ludicrous. Three weeks is a start, but does anyone really think that giving 16 and 17 year olds a month off will harm the programs, especially if the entire state is doing the same?

I have long felt that it should be the entire month of June. In addition to the very important aspect of spending time with family a kids body needs down time to recover. Some schools go year round with their sports programs, a trend I loathe. This is a great idea.

Agreed.

But that one week could be huge for a kid in terms of visting elderly out-of-town grandparents, going on a school mission trip, college visits, ACT prep classes, summer jobs, family vacations, and just plain old being a carefree teenager.

This.

Love it. Great call.

I know some coaches across the state who have gone ahead and enforced a 3 week dead period on their own as is.

Now, if we could just get the start of the season backed up to where it actually feels like a fall sport instead of a late summer sport, that would be even better. Don't take anything away, just back it up.

It is definitely bitter sweet for the players and coaches. For fall sports the season is so close, it's like waiting for Christmas. Be I believe it is much needed. There is no such thing as an "offseason" now. Players and coaches are truly going year round, so it will be nice for those involved to have more time with friends and family.

Can almost assuredly say that the kids and especially parents are happy with this decision. I'm on my last public school dead period so it's about 10 years to late for me if the KHSAA went that direction. I applaud the DOC. I do see some people seeing this as a in your face issue. What's another private vs public debate. Need something new to complain about. Just wait.

Am a bit surprised by the comments, not that I am unhappy with them, just surprised! I felt for sure that the DOC would be thrown into the hot coals for doing this but with the comments so far, I would not be surprised to see the KHSAA starting this policy soon.

While I believe the DOC Catholic HS will be put at somewhat of a disadvantage, the advantages to those kids families and to them and the coaches and their families, will far outweigh the negative!

A lot of people don't realize what the coaches families give up in vacation time and time with Dad or Mom, so this policy will benefit those wives/husbands of the coaches and their children! Good for the DOC!

Not sure I buy that, TOG. Coaches aren't forced to go year round, they do it by choice. As was mentioned, some in the state have already instilled a longer dead period. Coaches do it because they are afraid to fall behind the competition, greed breeding greed.

I agree 100%. The reason coaches go year round is because they can. Most of them are so afraid that if they miss 1 second of practice time when they can practice that it will cause them to lose games. It's the same thing with doind double sessions for football because you can do double sessions.

I commend the DOC for taking this action. Now if only the KHSAA would follow suit.

I know several schools that already do this. It was much easier to do for football coaches when the whole June/July thing came into play. Now the basketball coaches at our school go all the way up to the last possible day but not the football coach.

Correct. When dead period hits I'm done for the summer. If the players want to do individual camps they can or work on their own. i give them a list of what they need to work on, but I give them the rest of he summer off. When school starts they are ready to get back in the gym for individual workouts and open gym.

I think a lot of football coaches would argue that their kids get November and December off. I would say nice, but so what? We live in kentucky. Not exactly an awesome place in those months, and there is still school to contend with. Give them a month in the summer to be a kid. I think they woyld be surprised the positive results that would produce in freshness and attitude alone.

Great for all of the families involved. Player, Coaches, Cousins, etc. All schools in the DOC with the same schedule was a long time coming.

God 1st, Family 2nd, everything else can battle for 3rd.

I am only adding to the positive comments already posted. I hope the KHSAA follows suit. Great job DOC

I must say I'm pleasantly surprised. I figured that there would be people posting here how this would lead to the decline and collapse of football.
