Best bbq joint around the state

Featured Replies

I'm a big bbq fan. Having grown up in North Carolina and now living in KY for many years, I've experienced many different bbq "styles", some good...some not so good.

So, the point of the post...throw out some of your favorite bbq joints. They can be chain or local mom/pop, anything that floats your boat. Here's a few that come to my mind.

Big Moose's; Glasgow. Stop there EVERY time I'm in town, get either the shoulder slices or the smoked chicken...drastically different but both delicious. Great sides, love the sweet potato crunch.

The Pork Peddler; Paducah. Best bbq buffet I have found...yes better than Moonlite in my opinion.

Moonlite; Owensboro. When I go here, I go more for the sides and desserts more than the meat. I find the meat to just be ok, sides and desserts very good. Expensive though.

Old Hickory; Owensboro. Better meat here than at Moonlite.

Backwoods bbq; Paducah. Nothing fancy. If all you want is a pulled pork sandwich and a side with sweet tea, they are pretty solid with a reasonable price. Not a very big menu.

The Woodshed; Hopkinsville. I don't always get the bbq here as they have plate lunches as well, but bbq is good and homemade pies are great.

Martha's; Murray. Not "just" a bbq joint as they have an extensive home cooking menu. I usually get the smoked turkey here, though they have pork as well. Very good homemade sauce. Homemade pies are to DIE for!

There is a place in Glasgow that is out of town a ways that I was taken for lunch one day that was really good. Seems as if husband and wife owned a BBQ place and then got divorced and wife opened this place up on her own.

Can't go wrong with any of those on he list. I just wish that NKY had anything comparable.

I passed a place in Lexington today on New Circle that said "Alabama style." Don't recall the name. Not sure what Alabama style is.

We had one in Newport years ago. Anyone remember Louis' Ribs, across the street from the Cabooze?

I think in some parts of Alabama, they are known for a "white" bbq sauce that is mayonnaise based. I don't know if that's what they are saying, but I do believe it is unique to parts of Alabama. I've had Dreamland bbq and had another hole-in-the-wall bbq joint while in Tuscaloosa. I can't say I recall any distinctive differences as far as the meat is concerned.

I used to stop there every couple weeks to pick something up for lunch either going to or coming from NKU. Loved that place.

We have a place on US 60, between Lexington and Winchester called Sarah's Cafe. A little hole in the wall type place that is really good.

Schue's house.

I'm willing to host a mini-BGP gathering this summer, if folks are interested. I got a big backyard.

I'll bring the milk.

What is WKY bbq all about? For us mutton virgins, how does it compare to beef/pork bbq?

Heaton's in Princeton.

I think it's better than both, but for most people you either love it or hate it. Pretty distinct taste, I really wouldn't know how to describe it. Aside from really good baby back ribs, I'd rather have a chop mutton sandwich than anything barbecue wise. Chopped mutton with onion and pickle on rye bread. It really doesn't get any better than that.

As far as answering the original question posed within the tread, I'd have to say Old Hickory in Owensboro is the best that I have had. Moonlite is overrated, and I would agree with the previous poster, when I go there I tend to eat more sides and deserts than actual barbecue. That being said if you are ever at Moonlite you must try to coconut cream pie and the buttermilk pie.
