November 13, 201312 yr A three or two from Willis would have been nice. Hard to do sitting on the bench. Marcus Lee needs to get some minutes. Can block shots. Johnson is big but never gets off the floor. Willis would've been eaten alive out there last night. I know he's a KY kid, so everyone wants to see him play (much like Polson), but they aren't anywhere near the talent level as the guys that were out there. Johnson played really well when he was in there. Just got saddled with foul trouble.
November 13, 201312 yr Pleeeeasseeee stop with the Willis, Polson, etc. should play/ These guys would play if they deserve the minutes. Like the above said, they would have gotten eaten alive!!! Hawkins got in some serviceable minutes to give the Harrisons' a break. This team will be going no where if Willis and Polson are getting substantial minutes.
November 13, 201312 yr The #1 reason UK got beat last night was not transitional defense or turnovers or whatever. The main reason was horrible free throw shooting. It didn't matter how bad they played in the other areas, and we all knew they might have a rough night in some phases of the game due to their freshmen status, if they had just converted better than 20/36 from the foul line. There no way you can win a high level game of this magnitude and miss that many free throws. And I want to emphasize the word "free". Last time I checked it's a 15 foot shot with no one allowed to guard you. Get in the gym and work on techniques and form. Heck, get Macy to work with them. It inexcusable to miss that many free throws.

November 13, 201312 yr Calipari's teams have always struggled with the FT. Most Cal teams have issues. Very weird Weren't his team that made the final four with Knight, and the team that won it all good free throw teams? I seem to remember them being good. Now the Wall team and last years team did struggle.
November 13, 201312 yr FTs. Apparently doesn't recruit it and certainly doesn't teach / emphasize it once they get there. Always a worry in close games AND completely overlooked in blowouts -- which UK will have plenty of this year in the SEC.
November 13, 201312 yr I chalk most of the free throw issue up to the players are freshman. They get to the line and feel pressure to make them and psyche themselves out. Poythress seems to be money this year, Randle will figure them out, Young should figure it out since he is the best shooter on the team, the Harrisons will hopefully improve. The only people I see being sure misses are WCS and Johnson. It should come around
November 13, 201312 yr True story. None of which stopped me from trying to jinx Kentucky of course... :lol2:

Always a worry in close games AND completely overlooked in blowouts -- which UK will have plenty of this year in the SEC. If I'm a coach out on the recruiting trail FTs would be pretty much a non-factor in whether I recruited a player. Cal has always said he won't waste critical practice time (remember, they're limited in the amount of time they can practice each week) on shooting FTs. That it's an individual players responsibility to get in the gym and work on them on their own time. I couldn't agree more with that philosophy. FTs aren't something that can be taught or coached.
November 13, 201312 yr I have always felt FTs are more about mental toughness and comfort as opposed to skill. JJ Redick didn't shoot 10,000 FTs a day to become good at it. This team has a mental toughness about it. The title team from two season's ago was one of the better FT shooting teams in the country. Led the SEC if memory serves.

Also shooting 100 FT in a row after practice helps some but if they miss the first 2 or 3 and then get in a groove and hit 25 in a row does that help...they missed the first ones that would have counted. I used to stop practice right in the middle and make someone shoot FT's right then on the spot...make them and practice resumes, miss and a couple of suicides for everyone. Puts pressure on them to focus and hit the free throws while heart rate is up from practicing. Even Shaq could get in a groove and hit 50 in a row, but only the first 2 really matter.

I know he couldn't keep up with those guys. We needed scoring from someone besides Randle. Johnson is slow and can't jump. Lee needs to get a shot at playing some.

The few minutes Lee did play he was out of position multiple times that led to easy layups....Johnson may be slow and can't really jump, but he's big and physical and was able to pull down 5 boards in very limited action. He's clearly the better option.
