Since you are reviewing the records I was interested in how many of the teams at the top of Offensive yards and yards rushing lost in those games and does it have scores?

My guess is none. I'd guess there's never been more than a handful of games where a team scored that much and lost. I mentioned it in the update thread, but the previous record at WC was 43. It's their 8th loss when they score more than 30. Typically you score 5 TDs you don't lose.

9 reminded me of Vince Young. Smooth stride, big, and strong.

Hoge was 19/31 417 with at least 4 TD passes.

This one was easy enough to check. He played five series. The results were:

 

3 Plays, 8 Yards - Punt

2 Plays, -11 Yards - Fumble (unforced, all lost yards on the fumble)

5 Plays, 21 Yards - Downs (fake punt)

3 Plays, 80 Yards - Touchdown

5 Plays, 66 Yards - Missed FG

 

It's worth noting the large play of the missed FG drive, he wasn't in on. The TD, he was on the opposite side of the field.

 

Wow, that's interesting how one player seemed to make a difference. Hmmm, wonder what having the other starting DB's back there would have made an impact. Nobody will ever know, but I'm guessing defensively, HHS would have been a little better. For what it's worth, the kids that played played hard and now know what it takes to elevate their level of play to possibly start next year or give substantial support for the starters next year. All will learn from this and get better. That's the beauty of having enough personnel to insert when injuries happen. These same kids will get plenty of playing time this Friday and I bet they will be better for having played this past Friday. All is good in the Fort!

I'm not sure about "all is well"? I just left the school and there was an angry mob with axes and pitch forks standing in front of the school. Also saw a chicken running around screaming something about the sky! Not sure what's going on. Mueller nowhere in site!

 

Here's my final thought about this game. Regardless who was out, playing out of position or how much the back up defense played, I can tell you two things.

 

1) HHS has one of (if not THE best) coaching staffs in the state. AND, what I have learned is there is ALWAYS a method to their madness. ALWAYS! They are constantly working on something.

2)Weinrich and his coaches are one of the best staffs at making in-game defensive adjustments. Period

 

With that said, I did not see hardly any adjustment made on defense to stop what WC was doing. ALL their scores came on the outside with long runs or deep one on one passes. That's not really hard to make not happen, if you really want to stop that. Doesn't mean the offense can't adjust too, but you can stop what they were doing. Until very late in the game, I didn't see the safety come over the top to help. It was one on one on the corners. Also, didn't not see the defensive alignment change to keep the WC backs contained. Another pretty easy adjustment. I saw a mix of starters and backups coming in and out. I also so some kids playing different positions here and there. I'm not sure if WC had very many or any yards running in the middle of the defense. So if you are a good coaching staff and you're getting killed on the outside and ruling the middle, it's not very hard to adjust.

 

This brings me to my point. My gut tells me they have identified a weakness and wanted to address it and knew the WC skill kids would be a good test. Whether is was testing the young backups and trying to create depth at DB forcing them to play a specific alignment that they felt they needed to improve on. Trust me, this is not an excuse at all. I believe it is something they wanted to work on and saw an opportunity to work on it against a very athletic opponent. Did it almost turn into a loss because the WC kids didn't get the email about rolling over, yes? Did they put the first team back in (or at least the ones that started the game), yes. But by that time the WC train was rolling! I can say myself and many others around me felt if there was 5 minutes left in that game, WC would have pulled it off. They got on a role and would not be denied. For them it was one of those games where you have the momentum and you're on a role and you want to play all night!

 

WC is a class program and very good. I'm curious to see how they do in the playoffs. 3 of their 5 losses were in the beginning of the season and their other 2 are against BG and HHS. The rest of their games were blowout wins, so people can say they are 5-5 or whatever, but that team is pretty good.

 

Just a crazy game and very entertaining.
