No more postgame handshakes?

Featured Replies

Maybe it's just me, but I don't look at it as sportsmanship alone, I look at it as respect. I see a lot of people could care less about the handshake, and the act of the handshake may just be that, an action, but to me it is more than that. It's one of life's lessons to teach respect of others. I guess I'm old fashioned.

I have nothing against anyone who doesn't think the handshake should be a part of the games. I just think the meaning behind it has been lost with the mentality of football or any other sport isn't a game but a war and the players on the other teams are to be thought of as the enemy etc. IT is just a game in the end and it's participants are people after the same goal, to win. After the final whistle, the game is over and it's time to move on, not hold grudges. The handshake is just a sign of respect from one athlete to another athlete who they have competed against.

Well the coaches and players at the NewCath/Newport volleyball game tonight DIDN'T get the memo. There were hand shakes a plenty. :dancingpa

I can see where some of this is coming from. But I also know that the best players have respect for each other and will meet up after the games to show appreciation and respect for the other. Happens every game that we are at. You'll see 3-4-5 kids of each migrate to each other smiling, laughing, sharing that bond of battle. That will still continue regardless of mandated no shakes.

Honestly, this seems aimed more at the adults than the children. A kid in a post game handshake line can be suspended and punished at school. When adults do it though, the consequences are more far reaching. It's a sad day when adults act like children.

Apparently, we've already had a screwup by an official After the Robertson/Augusta vball game the official told them teams they were not allowed to shake hands.

Apparently , the official did not read the memo.

I'm sure it's not the first time an official got the call wrong. ;)

This reads like a story from The Onion.

I can't believe what the hell is happening to this world. Forbidden sportsmanship because very few adults can't show respect for eachother or the players they are coaching.

Now the reporter who said it was the ref who made the call is saying it was one of the schools.

For those that don't think the handshake is important, I can see your argument but not sure I agree....here's my thinking.....

Between the lines, players should go all out. No prisoners. Everything they have. When that whistle, horn or whatever blows, that is when they learn to separate contact from conflict. A WR and a DB, or a center and Nose Guard going at it all game, no one giving an inch, earn each other's respect......the handshake when it is all done shows that respect......

Nothing wrong with that. I don't think it should be mandatory. Let those who want to shake hands be allowed to do so but don't make everybody participate. Some may only want to shake a hand or two. In NFL games some shake hands and some don't. Some pray, some don't. I don't think anything post game should be mandatory. Except a shower maybe. :D

How about when kids come together and pray after a game, OMG they sometimes hold hands when they do that. Is that the same as shaking?

I don't mind the prayer after the game. I do mind the judging that comes when some may not want to pray after the game. Not everybody wants to pray after the game.

This is a sad development indeed. The KHSAA is going mouse hunting with an elephant gun. Instead of curtailing the tradition for all, why shouldn't the KHSAA just censure those who act up? Big-time over-reaction.

I've been told stories about games from the '50s, '60s and '70s that had fights during the post game handshake. I've seen fights in the '80s, '90s and recently during the post game handshake. So lets not pin it on "nowadays" because not "knowing how" to win or lose has been a problem since the first game of anything was ever played.

gchs, I don't remember lining up to shake hands after games in my era at Boyle. ('77 to '80). We went over sometimes and said something and shook hands on our own but it was "on our own" not a mandated line of "Good game" mumbling.

I just don't see how it's sad. The gesture means nothing. If I play like a jackwagon all game, dishing out cheap shots and taunts, how does shaking hands at the end make it better? A handshake doesn't change the way anyone feels, and doesn't make a non-repentant person suddenly a good sportsman. You can lead a donkey to water, but in the end he's still a donkey. I'm not saying those who want to seek out a handshake can't, but no need to make someone so something that has no meaning to them.

Where in the KHSAA handbook did it say post game handshakes were mandatory? I am not sure why the KHSAA is making this their issue to begin with! All this statement from the KHSAA is, is a CYA statement. I hope coaches and players a like don't fall for this... You battle between the whistles, you help each other up, you compete hard... When the final horn blows you shake hands and say good game... That's what life is about!!
