No more postgame handshakes?

Featured Replies

Just few thoughts....

1. What has changed? The officials have never stayed around after games.

2. KHSAA is just saying they will not be held responsible. BUT they want to fine the schools if something does happen. My thoughts are it's no longer a KHSAA event once your officials leave so NO you can not collect a fine or punish anyone if you dont want to accept responsiblity.

KHSAA does a lot of things I don't agree with, But this by far is the dumbest I have eever seen. It is called sportsmanship, something that should be the responsiblity of KHSAA and its members to teach.

Huh? That would mean the KHSAA doesn't have jurisdiction over practices, recruiting...etc. That's not the case. Schools are a part of the KHSAA before, during and after all contests and must adhere to their guidelines.

Well at least those of us in our 40 and 50's and up can remember what a joy it was to grow up in a great country . Man we suck anymore . Instead of tackling the issue and fixing it we run from the problem. Maybe in 2 more generations ( 20 years or so ) we can just legislate sports away , after all some poor soul(s) lose every time and they might get scarred by it . Thank a lawyer for this , that profession more than any, except politician , has taken us down this path .

I am saying this if they are giving up responsibilty then how can it be? The want to stop governing after games.

They don't want to stop governing after games. They want to allow officials, sometimes only 2-3 per game, from being involved with 5+ coaches, 50+ parents and 25+ players after a contest.

Heck, we all saw the video of the HS football game where the coaches threw down after. Should it really be on the 5 game officials to try to break that up? Absolutely not.

Maybe, as I stated earlier I am more concerned with my kid's behavior during the game. I also don't want my kid to think any less of a another kid that may not want ot shake hands with him after a game. Everyone is different and everyone handles situations differently as well. I agree the sports teaches kids a ton of things useful to their adult life. The post game handshake isn't one of those things IMO.

For example, after an intense meeting with the company over whether or not they should put up apprenticeship bids instead of allowing outside contractors to come in and take our work I am not going to shake hands with them when I leave that meeting with a loss. Or should I shake hands with them because that's what I was taught after my tee ball games?

No doubt behavior in game is also huge and even bigger, I don't disagree with that. However its the little things in life that also do add up, and something like that is a little thing that just goes a long with all the things of teaching young adults the right way to handle things. Is just shaking hands going to be the only thing that teaches them that? No not at all, but little things like that can help lead in that direction for some.

It seems to me it is the little things that we are missing out on teaching this new generation. This generation has been givin many advantages, and not getting some of the values that were instilled in us. Just like were changing a simple thing as a handshake because now more young adults can't handle themself after games. It seems that should be something we should try to fix with the kids, instead of just accepting that kids can't handle it anymore.

This whole thing was blown way out of proportion. But I do want to say this. This is definitely running from the issue than docking it. If coaches can't control their kids enough to shake opposing players hands then they don't deserve to be a coach.

I agree, and if coaches can't control themselves after games they shouldn't be coaches either.

Either way the country is laughing at us, the story was also on sportscenter today.

The KHSAA really screwed the pooch on this one. It would of been a lot easier and made a lot more sense if they were going to say anything about it in the first place they should of just sent a letter stating if any altercations or ill-will is reported during the handshake after games from players or coaches there will be a fine.

leave it at that and move on.

I understand the aprt about officials. They have always left after the games. I have no problem with them doing so.

My issue is the KHSAA doesn't want to encourage a hand shake because they dont want to be liable if something breaks out. So if they dont want to be liable then they shouldnt be allowed to punish or enforce punsihment on teams that decide to shake hands and something happens.

Bottom line accept liability and strickly punish those that have problems.

I'm thinking that the KHSAA should also ban handshakes before the games, such as when the captains meet at midfield for the coin toss before football games.....could get ugly there too lol

As for the bolded, not immediately in all sports.

I still haven't seen where they are discouraging handshakes.

"...the schools continue to have the option to have postgame handshakes as always, provided they are properly supervised..."

That's it. The entire thing is saying, have a postgame handshake and supervise it yourself because it's not on the officials to supervise it.

The more I think about it the more it does make sense for several reasons.

1st. It takes too much energy and time to shake kids hands and we all know how lazy kids are these days. Good call commish.

2nd. Germs, yuck, who wants to touch a dirty sweaty hand. Good call commish.

3rd. Parents said I was good and dont lose. Why admit I lost, its degrading on my pschye. Good call commish.

4th. Its bullying, they just beat me and now want me to say good job for it. Good call commish

5th. The government is shut down so why do we have to do anything extra, they dont. Good call commish.

6th. The coach lost, not me. Let him go say thanks. Good call commish.

7th. The administration at our school is too arrogant and lazy to take responsibility for our own actions so we came up with six stupid reasons to blame the Commish.

I agree but Im not blaming the commish, just having fun. Come on those are 6 funny reasons and 5 are true of society today.
