No more postgame handshakes?

Featured Replies

It was never tghe officials job in the first place to monitor the handshakes. I'm confused why this is to save the officials. Shoot I've seen many a games where the officials bolt as soon as the final whistle long before the first handshake takes place.

Because some officials would stick around. Football and basketball officials high tail it out of there. Other sports they do not.

And in baseball, a player or coach can get thrown out of a game even after it's over. That's another reason they need to get out immediately.

Here's the quote.......respectfully disagree.... "Following the contests' date=' officials are to quickly and efficiently leave the playing facility following all rules mandated duties and ensure that the rules book mandated jurisdiction ends promptly. There is no need for officials to secure the game balls, shake hands with the coaches or players, or stick around the playing area for any other reason. "[/quote ']

What are you disagreeing with?

My kids have been in two incidents.

That's the coaches fault, IMO.

Not every incident is reported to the KHSAA -- coaches yelling at each other, pushing, shoving, coaches having to seperate players, etc.

Most times, coaches step in and send their teams to different ends of the field.

Again, the problem is with the coaches, IMO, and not the players.

Some good points and some things to think about.

Wouldnt the ultimate sportsmanship be for the teams to wish each other luck before the game takes place, before the yelling, before the berating, before the tauting, before the dirty play, before the game.

Maybe if a HS kid or Coach is man enough to wish each other luck before the madness then maybe alot of the nonsense would stop. JMO

I know this is not a traditional thing to do in football but I have seen it done in many other sports. :thumb:

That makes more sense to me then the post game crap when the tempers are flaring...JMO

I see it in the beginning of a basketball game, when the kids are setting up for the jump ball. They shake hands with their opponents then.

True, but that isn't the coaches, players or schools fault the officials choose to hang around afterwards. It's all on the officials, although I have seen some baseball ump's high tail it out of there before the teams even hit the dugouts lol

Agree. I think the belief was that the officials should "police" the handshake. Tackett is making it clear that this is not the case.

There are two separate issue's being addressed.

1 - Officials shouldn't stick around because it may lead to confrontation.

2 - Coaches/Admins are in charge of their players conduct when the game concludes, not the officials.

Tell me something, Im a coach, shaking hands with opposing team players and coaches lets say mid line of my team. Jackwagon billy in the back from my team is in line and punches a kid from the other team during the handshake line. How am I as a coach supposed to control every action of Jackwagon Billy every minute, I cant. I can teach and teach and teach, its still up to Jackwagon Billy to do whats right, and these are kids, they dont do everything right.

The only way I can make sure that Jackwagon Billy or Bob, or Frank or Randy Parker, don't do something stupid in the handshake line is to not do it. If you take the kids off the leash long enough, eventually one will run arri. Sometimes the best way to avoid a situation that you cant control, is to not get in the situation in the first place.

IMO, if you have a kid on your team that feels that it is appropriate, for any reason, to punch a player from an opposing team in hand shakes, you have a discipline problem. It is your job as the coach to make sure your players understand there is zero tolerance when it comes to that sort of thing. No, you can't control Billy's actions every minute, but if you incorporate discipline in your program, maybe Billy doesn't even think about it... JMO.

Fair point but at the end of the day, there is nothing I can do to stop a kid who may never had any issues before from doing one wrong thing one time in his life of this nature. All it takes is that one time to start a big ordeal.

Trust me, there is alot of stuff that would be called "unsportsmanlike" that goes on in the handshake line.

In soccer, both teams shake hands with the refs and thank them. Tonight at Beechwood they left the field immediately as Directed.

Just to be clear, you are saying the refs left the field immediately? Did the teams still shake hands?

You immediately suspend the kid from the team. It's not too hard.

No one can keep someone from doing anything, but hopefully the coaches instill sportsmanship into their players. I do know that there are some coaches that instead of teaching discipline tend to go to the other extreme and instill in their players to play dirty etc. I wish one day these coaches would be called on the table for their players actions. I will not point fingers or give names but over the past I have seen some cheap shots and dirty plays and always from the same team, one episode that comes to mind was a kid punching another kid in the nuts at the bottom of a pile (and it was flagged, but the kid still got to play the rest of the game). Not saying what year or where this took place, but it's a common thing with this coaches players yet nothing seems to be done. I don't want to stray too far from what is being discussed, but to answer your post plant, a lot of that kind of stuff comes from what the coach allows to happen or even preaches that type of unsportsmanlike stuff.

The quick answer is if you are a coach of billy dumbbutt and he punches another player on the other team while in line to shake hands, then he is immediatly off the team for starters.

Understood but this is all AFTER the incident is happened. The point of the ruling was to stop the incidents from happening in the first place.
