Seven of the fourteen teams "the team considered by many to be the best in Kentucky history" played that year came within two touchdowns of "the greatest". One of those teams was 5-5, the other 5-4 (and one forfeit win).`This is a reatively lackluster record to be acclaimed the greatest. Sometimes our heart and our feelings get in the way of reality and statistics. :lol:

 

As to the non sequitor ""something the best team from last year..."comment, relax. Not every observation about a team not being the greatest ever is an attack on the school. Remember my Copernicus rule: the universe doesn't revolve around your favorite school.

This thread reminded me of the 1976 Moeller team with 40 players receiving scholarships (another starter, Bill Long ended up pitching for the Chicago White Sox) There were 21 players in 1976 and 19 in 1977. Also on that team was a sophmore TE Tony Hunter who went on to Notre Dame and Buffalo Bills.

I know they are not a Bluegrass team but they play alot of the Kentucky schools.

 

But they had some boys on those teams that were from the Bluegrass.

So was Reinstatler who played at UC. That's 6 D-1 players on that team.

 

Wasn't Scott Kuhnhein (sp?) also a member of those teams? He went on to play at Ohio State.

I remember that those were some talented teams at Harrodsburg then. It makes me wonder how they ever lost 4 games that year (1996)?

I saw those Harrodsburg teams in the semifinals from 1994-97, twice apiece against Mayfield and Murray. Craig Yeast was their star in 94, but I don't remember them being all that loaded with talent aside from Dennis Johnson and Julius Yeast in subsequent years, aside from the fact that they did have some good athletes with some speed.

For a team that ususally averaged about 25 players, they all can't be D-1 material. The number of D-1 players they have put out the last 15 years with about 25 players on average on their roster is pretty impressive.

20-12 for the first game of the season by a veer oriented team on the road sounds about right. The most important thing to remember - they won all the games against. Waggener, X, Boone, Warren Central, etc…stiff competition. Waggener was indeed 10-2. Trinity was able to beat that team twice in the same season, something the best team from last year could not accomplish. In fact, they where 42-0 by the end of the season winning their 3rd straight title. This team is considered by many (note: this does not mean all) to be the best in Kentucky history.

 

 

There is one factor that I neglected to mention in this discussion of the 1990 Trinity team- they were led by coach Lampley. This is an important factor for two reasons. First, it could be argued that he was the best coach ever in Kentucky high school football. Therefore, even aside from talented players or team chemistry, it is safe to say thatTrinity should have never been outcoached that season. This would be a positive in the discussion as to whether that team was the best team to ever play Kentucky high school football. Second, in analyzing the scores I should have mentioned that although they won seven of their 14 games by two touchdowns or less, coach Lampley did not run scores up. Sometimes teams are touted as the "best ever" in part on the strength of running scores up, particularly against inferior opponents. We see that today with Coach Redmon and Coach Beatty. Lampley coached teams were uniformly well prepared, well coached, and represented their school in a classy manner.

Lampley's Trinity teams were built around Defense, once they had a TD lead on you it was over. They ran the ball & milked the clock, times were much different back then, you have to look at how many points they held opponents to, not how many points they won by, so different than by todays standards.
