I now see another thread about a girls AAU tournament going on in September? None of this makes any sense to me.

check, make that 2 threads in girls hoops.

Event organizers can apply for an exemption thru KHSAA and individual players can apply for a one weekend exemption to attend an Elite Camp or Showcase type event after the first day of school.

I think it is a KHSAA rule and not a national federation rule.

Dont agree with the rule as I think it limits Ky kids opportunities but all good intentions aside the rule has been on the books for awhile. Cost the Dixie PG a game or two a couple of years ago

There are soccer kids in Louisville that are playing club ball and a local AD told me it was okay to do both. I understand about baseball and that is my point. Why are they allowed to play during the school year before there season starts and basketball kids cannot. Why is this a rule?

They can play club ball off season and during the summer. It is my understanding that, if they are playing club ball right now then they are in violation of KHSAA rules and could be ruled ineligible for hs play. That is unless soccer has some exemption that I am not aware of that the KHSAA has given the sport.. Admittedly I'm not the worlds biggest soccer fan so I don't keep up.

A lot of wasted breathe here IMO.

IF they are going to turn a blind eye like they have to all the transfers, I highly doubt they are going to spend a lot of time on this issue.

I believe Trammel was ruled ineligible for a couple games because he played in a local rec league where Pouncy was one of the refs. Unfortunately, he was forced to turn him in to the KHSAA. That is rules violation.

I'm with Q on this and not just because it affects what I do.

If...

No refs are present.

No running clock is present.

No score is kept on a scoreboard.

No school gear is worn to determine a team.

How could the KHSAA possibly say it is against the rules? I know there is an open gym in Columbus, OH ran by a Columbus Northland Coach and he has been investigated multiple times for his open gyms, only to have the state association come away with nothing because he doesn't use refs and allows the kids to select their own teams when they show up.

Here is what confuses me about his open gym, though.

He uses a 10:00 clock for each game but score isn't kept on the scoreboard.. No rules violation. Any justification on this?

This might answer some of the concerns.

Case BL-9-2- What specifically is permissible, and not

permissible for basketball players to participate in

after the first day of school?

The following situations would be expressly prohibited:

(1) Any play involving more than two (2) people at a time where score is kept, either among the players, on a flip scoreboard, digital scoreboard, or using any other device.

I think it is dumb, but it seems clear to me that any open gym where the players keep score (read: every open gym) would be prohibited. I've played in open gyms at a few schools within the last 6-8 years, we kept score on the floor every game.

I agree with your interpretation of the rule.

The KHSAA rule is way too gray for my comfort zone.

I hope all high school basketball coaches give specific explanations to their basketball players---with examples of what is verboten.

Folks, we have the most confusing, and most arbitrarily enforced bylaws known to high school athletics in the nation. I can't begin to fathom what it would take to top that handbook published by our association.

The players pick their own teams, has each team had more than 10 players. Score was kept by each team, how else were they supposed to know when to leave the court. (God forbid if someone had a stopwatch counting down the time in the stands....violation!!! violation!!!!). At the NewCath open gym, Coach Dawn is merely an observer.......if a kid comes up to him he can't say hi or chat with him?????? With all the other nonsense that the KHSAA seems to turn a "blind eye" to, a group of kids getting together to improve their games seems pretty harmless to me.

Easy! I'm all for letting the kids play but these open gyms are threading the needle. Based on the posts from the other threads, it is apparent that teams were preselected (did the Holmes, Beechwood or NCC boys split up and play with other players?), score was kept and Coach Dawn was interacting with the boys. If this is not correct, then those who post on the threads should be more specific. I can see why someone could have a concern but its no big deal to me.

Many of the OHSAA's rules differ from the KHSAA's. Apples and oranges.

Baseball is not in season and considered a spring sport. I don't think there are any hs varsity soccer kids playing select or otherwise right now, and if they are I believe they are in violation of KHSAA rules.

My understanding is...and I have looked it up before but darn if I could find the exact bylaw governing this when I just looked...but anyway athletes on a KHSAA high school level team (freshman teams to varsity) are not allowed to participate in non-KHSAA sports events during that particular sport's season. For instance, Joe Jones plays basketball for ABC County high school. Joe cannot play basketball in the local YMCA youth league or local church league during the defined basketball season. Unfortunately the KHSAA defines the basketball season as starting the first day of school, even though they can't officially practice until Oct 15th. Baseball, on the other hand, I believe doesn't "officially" start until Feb 15th, meaning hs baseball players can right now play organized fall ball if they choose to, as I understand it.

So, my understanding is, an athlete on a particular hs team cannot play in any other non-KHSAA leagues or teams during that particular sports season. This includes volleyball, softball, soccer, etc. If I'm wrong please someone show me because I would really like to know, but I believe I am correct.

Based on my understanding of the KHSAA rules, you are spot on here. Not sure it explains a lot about the open gym stuff, but everything you said is correct, based on my experience.

Not exactly sure why. I think it has to do with college women evaluation times. Dont Quote me on that. The KHSAA allows for a 1 week exemption during the fall that allows girls to attend camps.

First of all Q does not make the rules, the KHSAA does and I'd never trust the decision making process of the KHSAA. I could see them turning a blind eye on ridiculous transfers and than making an issue of something as stupid as an open gym. The only problem I see with yours is that you said these were not "open" gyms, kids had to be invited. I've seen your videos they are definitely not team A vs. team B. They are random kids playing hoops against each other, exactly what open gyms should be. I have no issues, but than again I don't sit on the KHSAA board.

This happened during the summer, I believe. I thought the issue was getting together for "open gym" after the 1st day of the school year.
