Can a kid be ruled ineligible for attending open gym?

Featured Replies

Anyone with knowledge of the KHSAA rules and by laws know if there are any rules AGAINST a kid or kids attending an open gym at another school?

As some of you know, this goes on EVERYWHERE around the state for the simple fact that it allows you to see better competition.

A few things to keep in mind:

1. No referee is present to make it an official game.

2. No score is kept on a scoreboard to make it an official game.

3. Being in a school gym with 4 other teammates and being out at the park with 4 teammates and playing against another school's "starting 5", there is no difference.

Long story short, a coach in Louisvile contacted the KHSAA and told them that scrimmages were going to take place (which is against KHSAA rules) at a certain school because of his players attending.

Now, if no score is kept, No clock is ran. No referees are present. No college coaches are invited (which means this wasn't a SHOWCASE). And teams are randomly selected, how could the KHSAA take action and TRY to say a kid is going to be ruled ineligible and how could these games be considered a "scrimmage?"

I would say no but Julian Tackett will give the definitive answer.

I do know there is a very fine line on this issue.

From what I heard from a KHSAA member, a kid isn't supposed to attend any non school function during the school year.

How is this possible? You are basically saying that a kid can't play basketball unless it's a KHSAA sanctioned event.

They cannot play AAU. No limit on non-organized events. They can play pickup.

Email Julian. He will respond.

Playing basketball in a school gym that is not your school's appears to be a gray area, IMO. So I can see how the questions come about.

I can also see why it should be a nonissue because it's really not that different from playing pick-up at Boone Woods or the Y.

How can you said that, unless the Boone County schools just leave the doors unlocked and allows anyone in the gym, with no one in charge of watching and that to me at least, is a law suit ready and willing to happen.

By using the HS gym, doesn't a person in charge at the school have to be in attendance where as at the Park, it's just the kids getting together. :idunno:

^Like Clyde said, non organized event. They are allowed to play pick up.

The question is about player eligibility if it is a non organized event like an open gym. I don't have the answers. It appears to be a common thing in NKY.

Hoops is correct. KHSAA has no rules prohibiting kids from one school participating in an open gym at another school. Only limitation pertains to coaches.

I guess everyone that showed up at NewCath, CovCath, & Beechwood open gym are now ineligible according to this Louisville coach :ohbrother:

This might answer some of the concerns.

Case BL-9-2- What specifically is permissible, and not

permissible for basketball players to participate in

after the first day of school?

The following situations would be expressly prohibited:

(1) Any play involving more than two (2) people at a time where score is kept, either among the players, on a flip scoreboard, digital scoreboard, or using any other device.

(2) Any play involving a third party acting in the role of a contest official, whether or not the person is a licensed or approved official.

(3) Any type of play against other players where the teams are selected either prior to arrival or after arrival, by any other method than simple player selection by the players themselves.

(4) Any play at any event where school funds are expended for participation fees, travel or any other expense, including fees paid by booster organizations or any member of the coaching staff.

(5) Any play where future play is predicated by the outcome of other play at or preceding the event.

(6) Any play at which players where school team identifying apparel of any type.

The following situations would be permitted:

(1) Activity such as individual play or skill development or technique drills where neither score nor time are kept and future play is not predicated by results of other play.

(2) “Pick-up” type of action initiated solely by players, and with no coaches, event organizers, promoters of event sponsors having any involvement in the activity whatsoever.

(3) Any individual instructional activity fully funded by the student participants at his/her own expense.

This might answer some of the concerns.

No. 2 on permitted scenarios could make the pickup games Walter setup as illegal. Walter, not the players, set it up and Walter could be considered an event organizer.

I think it's stupid, but that's way I would read it.

Seems like #3 could be a problem also if my starting five drove over to play your starting five.

Were there coaches involved, calling timeouts or calling plays and making adjustments?

I wouldn't think so. Open gym is basically just pick up basketball. I'd be more concerned about the "all star" games with underclassmen in the summer.

No coaches were going to be present from my understanding. Just a very nice array of talent hooking up to play some hoops.

Nothing wrong with that. That's just high-level pick up games.
