Can a kid be ruled ineligible for attending open gym?

Featured Replies

As I just said to a fellow BGP'er who called me, I'm not for a moment agreeing with, defending, or supporting the bylaw, BUT, it is crystal clear in its wording. I would think you're right, but I also think they wrote it that way for a reason....the question becomes, what was the reason.

Do I think it is absurd? Sure. Do I think it is crystal clear though? Yep.

Agreed. It was most likely added because someone abused it. Maybe put a few teams in the old Gus Macker tournaments, or something similar.

Folks, we have the most confusing, and most arbitrarily enforced bylaws known to high school athletics in the nation. I can't begin to fathom what it would take to top that handbook published by our association.

See Ohio's HSAA. Much better than ours. Only difference is KY allows coaches to work with their kids year round, whereas in Ohio, coaches only get certain timeframes where they can do team activities.

Easy! I'm all for letting the kids play but these open gyms are threading the needle. Based on the posts from the other threads, it is apparent that teams were preselected (did the Holmes, Beechwood or NCC boys split up and play with other players?), score was kept and Coach Dawn was interacting with the boys. If this is not correct, then those who post on the threads should be more specific. I can see why someone could have a concern but its no big deal to me.

At the Beechwood open gym....

Pangallo played with Bolden, Housely, Chames, and Hill.

McClendon played with Snapp and some other kids.

These teams were selected by the players, themselves. Obviously if kids are going to an open gym they will want to play with their teammates. I don't select teams.

At Covcath open gym...

Bolden played with the Moeves boys, Weyer, and another Covcath kid.

McClendon and Steffan Green played on a team with some of the Covcath guys and the Newcath trio.

First of all Q does not make the rules, the KHSAA does and I'd never trust the decision making process of the KHSAA. I could see them turning a blind eye on ridiculous transfers and than making an issue of something as stupid as an open gym. The only problem I see with yours is that you said these were not "open" gyms, kids had to be invited. I've seen your videos they are definitely not team A vs. team B. They are random kids playing hoops against each other, exactly what open gyms should be. I have no issues, but than again I don't sit on the KHSAA board.

In all honesty, I probably made the mistake of saying it was invite only. It's all about wording. Even though I said that, when people asked if they could bring kid A or kid B, I had no problem with it. For example, I invited player X, and he asked if he could bring certain kids to play on his team with him. I said Yes....which was the player selecting his team, not me.

All very confusing, but if I decide to have something in the future, I am definetly more prepared for issues that could come up with coaches. It's just a shame that ONE COACH ruined everything for all of the kids involved.

Delete Delete Delete......I just can't. ;)

They are however, expressly prohibited from participating in any game of two or more players where score is kept (including on the court amongst the players). You concede that is EVERY pick-up / open gym game, right?

........

So, according to this:

Case BL-9-2- What specifically is permissible, and not

permissible for basketball players to participate in

after the first day of school?

The following situations would be expressly prohibited:

(1) Any play involving more than two (2) people at a time where score is kept, either among the players, on a flip scoreboard, digital scoreboard, or using any other device.

....what they are doing is clearly and expressly against the rules, after the first day of school, if the players are keeping score (which, we know, they are). Yes, I'd be concerned about this given that this rule, no matter how dumb I think it is, is clear and direct on the intent. There really is no ambiguity in the rule, unless someone wants to try and pretend that the kids on the court aren't keeping score.

Based on the wording, yes, every open gym in KY would be illegal.

But 2 on 2 with a full scoreboard is legal.

You're the one who posted that there was Team Beechwood, Team Cov Cath, Team Holmes and the other team. You might want to be a little clearer in your posts so it doesn't mislead people. I'm just asking, if teams were randomly selected, how did the majority a teammates end up on the same teams? This just doesn't pass the smell test.

I posted kids from those schools were there. Watch the video and, you'll see they mixed the teams up. I post the the kids by team because It's easier than typing individual names. What's the big deal? Seems like you think this is something bigger than it really is/was.

The majority of teammates ended up on the same team because that's probably who the kids wanted to play with. I just show up. That's my only involvement with either. You're asking the questions to the wrong guy. You want answers, ask Ruthsatz or Goetz, who held the open gym for THEIR TEAM. Unlike when I was in hs, kids around nky talk a lot and are much closer than I was with kids from other schools. They tell eachother about their open gyms and that's why you see 4 and 5 kids from school a showing up as a group.

As far as I know, the nky coaches have no problem with it because It's making their kids better.

This thread started asking about the KHSAA's position on open gyms. So the above is irrelevant. Question was asked if the open gyms were OK. By the LETTER of the law they look to be in violation. That's really all that's relevant in this thread. It's an asinine rule unless there is a reason behind it that we're not aware , however, the rule is the rule.

With that said, ZERO chance the KHSAA does anything about this.

And your last sentence is all that matters at this point.

Not exactly sure why. I think it has to do with college women evaluation times. Dont Quote me on that. The KHSAA allows for a 1 week exemption during the fall that allows girls to attend camps.

Your right.

An issue of liability would also come into play here... To play in an open gym our district makes participants provide a current KHSAA physical before they are allowed to play.

If a kid from another school shows up and has a major health issue while at one of these open gyms mentioned in this thread, the school could have a major liability headache.

And that would be the fault of the school hosting the open gym WHY?

Ok I've had a chance to do some more research and talk to some very well connected people. My best advice for the kids RIGHT NOW.... Stay away from open gyms. To close to basketball starting and if you are now working out with your team, I wouldn't risk it.

It sucks, but it us reality from what I've been told.

And that would be the fault of the school hosting the open gym WHY?

Because if you open the gym for kids to participate you have a liability risk for what happens while those kids are under your watch.
