Bylaw 9 has an exception for girls basketball. They are allowed to participate in showcase events (ncaa certified) on a predetermined date. This year to my knowledge it is Sept 27th weekend.

I won't mention any club teams or players but what about recent tryouts for AAU teams and high school aged players attending when school has started? Does this make the kids ineligible?

According to KHSAA, if it is a freshman who HAS NOT ever played yet in any high school basketball games, they can participate in basketball events up until their high school season starts.

But also check with the high school coach as well. He/she may have a strong preference as to the date the frosh stops playing AAU or rec once school has started.

Hoops is correct. KHSAA has no rules prohibiting kids from one school participating in an open gym at another school. Only limitation pertains to coaches.

 

What happens if someone gets hurt? Who is liable? School insurance shouldn't have to cover it. Boy, this is dangerous.

If little johnny hurts himself going up for a shot or twists his ankle, it's on him....:poop: happens, is the neighborhood park responisible if he gets hurt there???? Don't see where the school that is hosting the open gym is responsible.

I wouldn't want to be a host school where a kid got hurt and there was any debate over safety. Something as simple as the location of the ball rack could cause for a lawsuit. I am not saying I would side with the lawsuit, just saying a lawsuit is more likely to occur nowadays.

They are however, expressly prohibited from participating in any game of two or more players where score is kept (including on the court amongst the players). You concede that is EVERY pick-up / open gym game, right?

....what they are doing is clearly and expressly against the rules, after the first day of school, if the players are keeping score (which, we know, they are). Yes, I'd be concerned about this given that this rule, no matter how dumb I think it is, is clear and direct on the intent. There really is no ambiguity in the rule, unless someone wants to try and pretend that the kids on the court aren't keeping score.

As I just said to a fellow BGP'er who called me, I'm not for a moment agreeing with, defending, or supporting the bylaw, BUT, it is crystal clear in its wording. I would think you're right, but I also think they wrote it that way for a reason....the question becomes, what was the reason.

 

Do I think it is absurd? Sure. Do I think it is crystal clear though? Yep.
