I recently heard a local high school may transition in a new announcer. That got me thinking...there are many men behind the microphone that we grow accustomed to on Friday nights. How about we honor them for their great work and dedication to their respective programs? My vote is for Greg Rose, voice of the Campbell County Camels. Greg mixes enthusiasm and wit when announcing games. He is the voice of the Camels and does a magnificent job. Nothing beats him yelling "And that's a Campbell County First Down!". Who are your favorite announcers and why?

I agree, a lot of people really like the Collins announcer. He is funny and does a good job calling names and is respectful to the opponent, always congratulating both teams on a great game at the end. He also has a tendency to get a little excited when Collins makes a big play (he calls a lot of plays "big time") and isn't afraid to try to get the crowd going. He likes to get the stands shaking by asking for some Third Down Thunder and for the Collins fans to help out their defense. Sometimes he will even give the Collins players nicknames, like DeAndre "Take it to the House" Farris, which always brings some smiles from the sidelines and a laugh from the fans.

I've heard nothing but great things about Mr Collins and he's obviously a great supporter of and asset to the Camels.

 

With that said, his style is not for me. Way over the top.

 

The "first down" call is cool and it gets the fans going. Love it. The commentary though...

 

Maybe it's an acquired taste.

 

Again, nothing but great things about him.

Thanks, afi, I agree with you. Really, UK? How can you say that? How is he annoying? He is purple and gold through and through. He doesnt disrespect anyone from the opposing team. As far as I know, he doesnt have any skin in the game (relatives/family members playing). To me, that's what it's all about. Whether or not your team is good or bad, your play announcer is a team guy. I'm sure there are more out there. I'd like to have them recognized. They are the voice that the fans come to know and respect. And they become a staple of the local fans who come to watch the team first, but who also enjoy listening to the announcer because he contributes to the atmosphere. That is what a high school game should be about. Someone who gives credit where it's due yet supports the home team.

Jay Broadus at Ryle has done a great job as the school's only announcer. His most memorable call had to be in 2005 when his son, Reid, was a senior defensive lineman for the Raiders. Reid scored a defensive TD and I remember Jay making the call: "Touchdown Raiders- That's my boy!" Everyone loves Jay. Great man and announcer.

I'm not a fan of the Camel announcer. If I want play by play I would turn the radio dial.

It's a tie between the Johnson Central announcers and Lexington Catholic's........not.

I subscribe to the minimalist approach. Less said the better.

The best announcers are those that make it about the game and the kids and not themselves, jmo:thumb:

 

The most entertaining and best I have heard in some time was the Harlan announcer back in 20n10

 

a line that I will always remember from that (muddy not bloody) nite in Harlan...

 

"Baby Jesus, we pray to you and thank you for the coal miners and the coal that have provided the power to turn these lights on here tonight and keep the lights burning in Ft Thomas"

 

Absolute awesome environment and very, very proud folks and rightfully so....:thumb:

I am not a fan of the play by play announcers either. Walton and Owen Cty come to mind. I use to love Newports announcer back in the day. May still be the same guy but not as good as in the 80's and 90's. Sorry, I don't know any of these guys names.

I'm glad you posted that because it reminds me of another topic, the best fans. I'm not talking about the most rabid fanbase for their team, but the group of fans that has left a pleasant memory.

 

Your post reminded me of the fans from Harlan County last year. Very respectful and although huge fanbase for their team, after the Semi Final game last year held at their terrific stadium, I never had more opposing fans come up to me after a game they had lost and congratulate us and root for us the rest of the way. Very respectful and great people through and through.

 

Even after the game I received pm's on here from many of their fans wishing us the best etc.

 

I must add that going down to the game a couple of us were a bit worried hearing about the "No one leaaves Harlan alove" motto etc. But they were the most respectful fans I've ever had the pleasure to see.

The announcer for Campbell County is SO annoying! Please make him stop!
