RickyP, you are partially correct when you say that public schools have the advantage because the student doesn't have to foot the bill! But, my argument is that the point is mute in ALL CASES if there is not a legitimate address change. Private schools have no boundaries (as of today, if I am correct) thus allowing them more freedom of who participates athletically. Public schools are still confined to district boundaries unless there is a definite address change! KHSAA is the one who ultimately decides on what is a correct change of address in all cases and we all know that their superior investigative skills are in the same park as some of our CIA informants on WMD's.

I dont think there will be a split from public and private but for the All "A", I would like to see the qualifying #'s for it reduced. Many schools have 2A footballl team and A basketball. The # needs to be reduced to 25% or 30% of the schools, 2A 25% or 30%, 3A 20-30% & 20-30% for 4A.

 

1. Get a # of participating schools

2. Divide that by 4.

3. this should help draw truer lines of how many should be in the A, 2A, 3A & 4A

I did talk to a few lee fans about brossart. they said the coaches on the bench were not the same as those that came to scout in the regional. brossart had several coaches on the bench plus these "scouts" which they said were "freshman coach" was what they told the lee fan i talked to.

Our assistant freshmen coach, a couple of our junior high coaches, and a former player handled the 14th Region scouting assignment. None were paid. They had a couple of meals at Applebee's which we paid for as well as their gas.

 

At Brossart, only the head coach, jv coach, and head freshmen coach are paid positions. The Varsity assistant and Freshmen assistant are volunteer positions as are all of the support positions and junior high positions.

 

Goes to show that there is more to life (or being involved in a high school basketball program) than money.

This may not seem like a lot to you but in the 14th region and the schools that I am familiar with. they do not have $$ to give & do not give money for gas or meals. A volunteer is a volunteer and $$ is not given. They pay only 2 coaches & scouting trips, meals etc are paid by the volunteers.

I think that there needs to be a split. Even though it would not help the All A classic in anyway. It would be a very good thing for the Sweet 16 because there will be more private schools then public schools. It would also help in football, pretty much every sport. They need to split because it is a joke when public can't recruit and private can. You are playing at a unfair advantage.

I'm not going there ... it's against the Terms of Service and I think knowledgable fans can figure out the prime suspects.

 

But a previous poster's contention that "recruiting" is only done by private schools is ludicrous.

There is a huge disparity between the number of students within the Diocese of Covington (12000+) and the Owsley County school district (450). These schools are only examples for my argument, but I think that associated private schools function much the same as a local school district. The Diocese of Covington has one primary superintendent of schools who is in charge of 29 elementary schools and 9 secondary schools.

 

For this reason alone, I think that the "All A" school class should be redefined to address this disparity.

 

To say that the 'private' schools success in athletics etc.. is largely due to any other reason than the numerical advantage of potential athletes may be misleading.

 

To compare to the potential numberical advantage that the top Catholic 'basketball' schools hold, a Coach would be able to select athletes from 10 to 20 public school districts in Eastern Kentucky. (all of the 8 teams composing the 55th and 56th basketball districts probably have less combined students than do the schools within the Catholic Diocese of Covington, and that is including Estill, Powell and Breathitt who are too 'big' for the All A).

this is a great point. I do not know exactly how it operates but on this post I have heard they go get kids from their diocese. I was assuming that these were within conventional school districts but this may be incorrect as ARC has stated. if public schools are bound by these districts & private is not, there is an unfair balance. If you change a transfer request from "private" to "public" it should be legal. in most of these cases it is legal for private but illegal for public b/c of zoning/districting. If public has to operate under districting then private should as well instead of "recruiting" under the umbrella of the diocese!
