Mayfield has suffered greatly this year at the hands of private schools this year. NCC beat Mayfield in the state football championship game and NCC beat Mayfield in the "All - A" state basketball tourney. St. Mary's beat Mayfield's girls in the regional "All - A" basketball tourney. That being said I think it will make us work harder to win and that has generally worked well for us. Historically, we have been fairly successful against private competition and I look for that to continue. Football, as all know is our bread and butter, we have had great success against privates including beating NCC 2 of 3 times for state titles. I have mixed emotions over this topic but I think I prefer to continue with things as they are. To me it means more knowing we beat all takers whether public or private. OC might find their way to single A in football which would create a immediate threat but I think that will do nothing but make us work harder to stay on top. I feel the same in other sports though we are obviously not as dominent. I look for us to continue our success reguardless of who is in our class whether it be public or private. If I had to compete against the 4A privates in football my view might be different but I dont have to worry about that so its hard for me to say for sure how I would feel if I was in that situation. In looking at the Class A teams in the "All - A" tourney I noticed that alot of the public school teams were also the same teams that made big runs in the state football playoffs. Sommerset, Bardstown, Mayfield. Beechwood also has a strong basketball team this year. Could it be that these public schools are doing somthing different that allows them to find athletic success? I dont really know the answer but I am certain of the effort we but into our football program at all levels and that effort is a hard act to follow

Well said toothpick. Being from NKY and a supporter of NCC I have obviously been happy with the two outcomes this year. But more importantly, I'm glad to see a statewide opponent such as Mayfield have the great success that they have had in both football and basketball. I have spoken with kids on both the basketball and football teams and they are excited at the prospect of getting a chance to play the Cardinals next year.

I don't mean to infer that all of these positions are paid positions at the public schools. Many of the public schools have volunteers that are just as loyal as the privates. Just indicating that the private school athletic budgets are very meager indeed.

I am sure that there are budgets public/private that are very meager and comparable. I am sure that there are budgets for public/private that are very middle-of-the-road. I am sure that there are budgets that are rather large for both public/private. LexCath is one that I would assume sees a few dollars go through the athletic budget.

 

Not sure what is going on at privates but publics are now beginning to fight the issue of board of eds wanting to charge athletic departments for mileage. Over a $1.00 per mile being charged to go and play an away game. Add to that the over $10 per hour charged (including while they are watching the game) to the athletic department for the bus driver. One away game COULD end up costing an athletic department over $200. Not a big deal for a urban school. HUGE COST to rural schools.

Private Schools do have an advantage:

1. They do get to "choose" some of the better players/students from several feeder programs. Most small schools get what they get & just hope they have enough year by year to field a freshman and jv team. Catholic Schools do not have this problem since they select each team each year.

2. Funding for coaching/equipment/etc. I've noticed private schools typically have large or larger coaching staffs than public schools. Many small schools only pay 2, 3 or 4 coaches at best. I've heard several small schools that only buy new uniforms every 3,4 or 5 years & do not buy their players shoes or equipment. I do not know about private schools but i'd imagine they have some "perks"

3. Open enrollment is not a factor as long as you are one of the "chosen"!! Also, parents of really really really good players always are looking out for their sons/daughters education and religious asperations. This also doesnt hurt on a transfer request!!

4. I dont think the schools should be seperated in the All A but the levels are not equal between public and private!!

In the public school arena this is seen as recruiting (i.e. if a coach from Tates Creek tried to talk a player from say Beaumont Middle School to come to tates creek). Students can go but without the entisement from rival schools.

also on #1. Catholic faith is an easy reason/excuse for transfers. If a kid going to say Boone County High School said, "I'm transferring to BB b/c i want to further my catholic faith & better my education." This would be a hard case for the KHSAA to refuse. Also, it is difficult for me to fathem that there are non-catholics going to catholic schools.

I would agree that some public schools in say Lexington, Louisville, Bowling Green and Ashland pay more for coaches because of their tax base but there are more than 100 other counties that do not have that luxury and choses are not give high salaries. I do not know the salaries but i would say that BB, OCC, Lex C, NCC all coaches salaries are much higher than most if not all coaching salary in the 13th, 14th, 15th or 16th region.

I have also experienced that the sports teams get players only from their Catholic feeder schools. Every person on a sports team at Brossart, I believe, went to a private feeder school to Brossart since grade 1. Do public schools have to beg groceries, have a shoot-a-thon, sell wreaths, or other things to get enough money to support an athletic program. Quit looking for outs on not being able to beat a team and assume they must be doing something that gives them a better advantage. If they beat you, then most likely, they're just better than you. DEAL WITH IT! Outside of a very small minority, privates play it just like the publics.

yes we beg for shoes and uniforms. Our boosters raise money for these things to or we wouldn't have them. This has nothing to do with losing to a quality team like Brossart who i admire for the way they play the game.

I disagree with the bolded part. The thing about the state of Kentucky is that there is one state champion (ironic that I say this in a thread about the All A). I am totally against any separation, but moreso clearer rules, with harsher enforcement. If people are worried about anything with the state, it is a bigger problem enrollment (class) wise rather than public/private.
