The Brossart Mustangs Boys Varsity/JV Basketball Program is made up of seventeen, home grown athletes who each came from one of our six district feeder parishes. There is not a recruit, move-in, or transfer among them.

 

 

 

Each played in the Campbell County Parochial Basketball League when they were in grade school.

 

Period!

 

No recruits here - I can't speak for the others.

 

Same goes for NewCath as most of the their kids come from the CC Parochial Basketball League as well.

The advantage is in the preparation that the private grade schools give their student/athletes. Brossart and NCC combined have a total of about 10-12 feeder parishes that they draw students from. The combined population of which is much smaller than the population that attends the public middle schools that feed the public high schools in Campbell Co, Highlands, Newport, Bellevue and Dayton. However, each of these grade schools have very well run athletic programs and develop their players from the third grade on. Some of these grade schools have less than 100 students total in grades 1-8 yet they still field teams and develop players.

 

When these students come together at the high school level their is tremendous competition for limited spots on the high school teams and the talent runs deep.

 

There is no comparison between the private grade school athletics and the public grade school programs.

 

Neither of these two teams recruit their athletes! Neither team has a player that is from out of district or that is a product of public middle schools.

Come to some of the Catholic grade school basketball tournaments that are held this time of year in Northern Ky and you will see why Ncc Brossart and the rest are so competitive.It seems that every Catholic grade school has a tournament. Some grade schools have 2or 3 teams per grade boy and girls . With this type of competition you are bound to have good players be developed and you are kidding yourself if you think that all of these kids go to a Catholic high School these programs help the public schools too . Is it like this in the rest of the state .

This is my 4th year coaching in the Catholic school league and like you said there is A LOT of good talent. We play at least 20 games per season at the 5th & 6th grade level. Looking forward to seeing some of these kids play in HS!

In some of the larger public or county schools in many instances there is so much competition between the schools that individual agendas are put ahead of the program, creating power strugles between the grade school, middle school and high school programs. In order for a high school to be successful all of the feeder schools must be on the same page when it comes to preparing the young athletes both fundamentally and in terms of x's and o's.

I don't think this happens in Campbell Co but I may be wrong .

When you have players who can choose what schools they wish to attend, you are always going to have better teams at that school. If you have players who played together since they were all like 8 years old, and they get together and decide to goto the same school, they WILL be good. I know from experience that you can choose what school you want to attend in Northern KY. I see good athletes making decisions to goto a school that they have a better chance of winning a championship and being seen by scouts/etc. This happens A LOT in Northern KY.

With the public schools who have open enrollment --students can choose which school they wish to attend in the public arena as well

i.e. the 16th region. Open enrollment schools have nothing to complain about, period.

When it comes to the private vs. public debate, I believe too many people are missing the point here. Private schools do the best they can with the rules / finances they are given to work with. Private schools do not intentionally recruit, but they must advertise however is the most effective way possible to survive against public funded schools in every area. So yes, sometimes athletics is the best source of enticement for prospective students.

That is not recruiting, just parents making decisions for what they feel is best for their kids! I believe IT IS UNFAIR that private schools can do this and public schools cant. but private schools, whether they feel slighted or not, Do have the advantage when it comes to assembling an athletic team, especially when it deals with the smaller schools.

RickyP, correct me if I am wrong, but open enrollment is worthless when it comes to athletic eligibility unless there is an "official" address change with the (both) parents moving also.

There is a rumor floating around that BB bought some athletes from their feeder schools to the first round of the MCIT. They supposedly provided transportation, a meal, and admission to the game. If thats not recruiting I dont know what is.

I'm guessing in your area middle school kids aren't allowed to attend Varsity events?? Wow!!
