Drivel is what you just posted. Not sure of the rest of the schools, but you can take Beechwood and Highlands out of there because they are independents. The most of the rest of which remain, "to my knowledge," don't have any competition from other high schools to pull student athletes away from them. So yes, when you have them circumstances in place, of course you should have a better concentration of athletes to pull from that area.

 

I disagree. Bardstown, for instance, is constantly in a border war with Nelson County, though the two have a contract of sorts. Both of them compete with Bethlehem, a small catholic school in Bardstown, that is gaining steam.

I understand that Bethlehem was one of the schools that Brossart contacted before Brossart looked into starting a football program (possibly starting next year at the JV level). I was unaware that they were in the Bardstown/E-Town area. My mistake on posting them in to that post. Thanks. By the way, if Brossart is going to start a football program (and I'm all for it - I am not in favor of any proposed "split"), they could do worse than follow Bethlehem's example. Coach Hart started slow and has built a small "program." Very, very complex to have a private, small school football program outside of Louisville or Lexington.

I just hope that Brossart stays clean and retains their crediblity that they have already established. They have a top notch program, athletically and academically. Starting football at a small school like Brossart takes some BIG STEPPING STONE! I hope they can keep the success they have at the other sports without pulling other athletes away from the other sports programs that are doing well at this point. Here's to big steps at Brossart :walk: !

The 2 schools from NKY that went were ( you guessed it) private schools. Are there any single A public schools (NKY) that are giving the privates any competition?

There are only 5 public schools that have won the All A state championship. I can name three, Dilce Combs, Hazard, and Bardstown. Who are the other 2 ?

If General Lee had won, our way of life would probably be a little different.

Private Schools do have an advantage:

1. They do get to "choose" some of the better players/students from several feeder programs. Most small schools get what they get & just hope they have enough year by year to field a freshman and jv team. Catholic Schools do not have this problem since they select each team each year.

2. Funding for coaching/equipment/etc. I've noticed private schools typically have large or larger coaching staffs than public schools. Many small schools only pay 2, 3 or 4 coaches at best. I've heard several small schools that only buy new uniforms every 3,4 or 5 years & do not buy their players shoes or equipment. I do not know about private schools but i'd imagine they have some "perks"

3. Open enrollment is not a factor as long as you are one of the "chosen"!! Also, parents of really really really good players always are looking out for their sons/daughters education and religious asperations. This also doesnt hurt on a transfer request!!

4. I dont think the schools should be seperated in the All A but the levels are not equal between public and private!!

And it shouldn't matter! If a family wants to send their kid to a school like Brossart more power to them. You can not deny the benefits of a catholic education and the discipline that surrounds that education. Which by the way is another reason these schools compete better. Their players tend to me more discipline and put the time in it takes to be great.

 

My question would be why doesn't the work ethics and discipline show up in the Governor's Cup Academic Competition? In the last 2 years there has only been 3 Private Schools in the top 30. (Lex Cath, Assumption and St X)

Harlan won it twice with what was virtually a county all-star team. Glasgow won it when Brandon Stockton was a junior.

Many private schools pay as little as $1400 - $2000 above the teaching salary to the teachers that coach their teams with the assistants receiving little or nothing. Private school uniforms are purchased by the school's booster organization and paid for by fundraisers run by the parents. New uni's every 3-5 years is about right. And the parents of the players pay for their shoes and equipment.

I did talk to a few lee fans about brossart. they said the coaches on the bench were not the same as those that came to scout in the regional. brossart had several coaches on the bench plus these "scouts" which they said were "freshman coach" was what they told the lee fan i talked to.

I know through direct experience that it is true for the NKY private schools. Brossart has a number of coaches that help with various items like frosh team and scouting. These people do it as a service to the school and do not get paid. They may get some expenses covered but they don't get any pay.

 

This is true for all of the NKY private schools. There is a tremendous amount of volunteer work that needs to be done. Scouting, filming, bookkeeping, scorer's table, announcing, etc. None of these people get paid. In a lot of instances not even the trainer is a paid position.

Publics have people who scout for them that are not a "coach" that sits on the bench. I have employed those people in the past and have served as one of those "scouts" in the past.

 

I don't mean to infer that all of these positions are paid positions at the public schools. Many of the public schools have volunteers that are just as loyal as the privates. Just indicating that the private school athletic budgets are very meager indeed.
