At its July 22nd meeting, the KHSAA Board of Control received results from the latest playoff format survey completed by the membership. The survey was performed as the first step in beginning the process of aligning football for the 2015 through 2018 playing seasons. 210 of the 220 football playing schools responded, with 118 members (56.2%) favoring retaining the current format of bringing 4 teams from each district to the playoffs, 39 favoring bringing only three teams, and 53 favoring bringing only two teams from each district. The Commissioner applauded the membership for the outstanding rate of response.

 

This data will allow for the initial development of alignment drafts. The efforts will continue with more discussion at the November meeting of the Board of Control regarding an exact combination of enrollment data to be used and further discussion of the options in class 1A, where the schools were nearly evenly divided on a playoff format. The current plans calls for the development of an alignment draft for those future years to be completed prior to the January, 2014 meeting. After a draft is approved, it will be sent to the membership for review and the Board plans on finalizing the process not later than its May, 2014 meeting to allow for scheduling to begin.

Blowouts are not fun, especially for the losing team, but I never hear the players complaining about having to play another game.

Also congrats to JT. He's done a fantastic job in my opinion; not only as the Commissioner but in all his prior years as an Asst. Commissioner. Kudos to the BOC for extending his contract.

I know its not what the fans want to see. I have always said that these school egtting whipped just want to make the playoffs. Thinking about it I guess that is a goal they can work toward. So hats off to those schools.

There are more detailed results in the links and you can see how your school voted. That tells me the schools would rather have a blowout than not be in the playoffs at all.

What kind of Goal is it to make to be 4th place in the district? For many districts, you don't have to do anything to reach the playoffs.

 

It didn't pass overwhelmingly, but obviously it passed so it's a done deal IMO. I would be curious how many of the 48% that voted to change are the schools that are on the losing end of these blow outs. Are most of the 52% coaches and ADs who haven't experienced these?

 

I'm selfish. I don't care about the blowouts. I simply want to the Championship to be a week earlier on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Whether Beechwood was there or not, I would go every year if they were on a normal Day off for me.

My guess it is more about revenue.

44% may want change but that 44% is split on the changes that should be made. 118 say keep it the same. 39 say do it this way and another 53 say do it this way.

Very interesting seeing how the schools voted.

 

A nice amounts of programs with rich traditions like 4 teams in the playoffs.

If I read it right Mayfield wanted 2 teams to make the playoffs.
