Those of you that have teams in Class 3A, District 5 (Bath, Bourbon, Estill, Garrard, Powell, WH) the voting went like this; 4-Team (Bath, Bourbon, Garrard, Powell), 2-Team (Estill, WH)..

 

It's strange that Estill voted for a two-team playoff..

The current playoff structure is a dream for people who like bad football.

I agree. Forget about all the comparison to other sports and other arguments. Here's my main problem with 4 teams. I feel that making it to the KY HIGH SCHOOL STATE PLAYOFFS should be something special for the kids...a sense of accomplishment. It should be a honor and privelege and an accomplishment you are proud of. It should be earned. When you look at 5A (and I'm sure it's similar in all the other classes), 32 of the 40 teams in 5A made it to the state playoffs. Only 8 teams were left out. That's not what I call an honor to make it. At that point, just let them all in! Why even have district play and elimination? Because I can guarantee you that some teams that are getting eliminated are better than some that are making the playoffs. If you come from a strong division and get eliminated, I'm sure there is a team from a 4 teams division that may not be anywhere near as strong as a team that was eliminated from a strong district. So either let them all in or decrease the number that get in. I would be okay either way.

 

There are too many classes. You can't expand the classes AND the number of teams that make the playoffs and have any feeling the making the playoffs are special. It's not and it should be! If they kept one of the other the same (4 classes or only 2 teams), I would have no issues at all. With 4 classes and allowing 4 to move on, you'd still get some pretty competitive 4 seed teams. But you can't to both and think that kids would feel good about making the playoffs. It's not really a very big accomplishment. I'm not demeaning the 4th place teams, I'm saying that as a player, it can't be a great feeling of accomplishment to make it to the playoffs...and it should be special to the kids. But it's not when 32 of the 40 teams advance within a class.

 

I could actually live with the idea of having only 3 teams per district. Especially districts with more than 4 teams in it. I still think a major flaw, especially hearing among one of the chief complaints is the travel expense etc. for the first round etc. would be to have more of a district playoff as I described earlier so that the teams wouldn't have to travel too far the first 2 weeks. If you have 3 teams in, give the #1 seed a bye the first week and the 2 and 3 seeds play eachother for the winner to play the #1 seed.

 

I think 3 teams making it is a lot better than 2 teams because with a 2 team scenario there are going to be too often a team that deserves to be in due to a tie etc. than if there were 3 teams to be included.

I a disappointed in the results staying with the 4 teams, as I had stated I thought that 3 teams from a district advancing would be better. That stays away from round 1 blowouts plus rewards each district champion with a bye, putting even more value on winning their district.

 

So, it is decided and that's what it's going to be and as they say, that's that. I love and support h.s. football in any format so lets get going on a new season, it's just about kickoff time. :thumb:
