I think you need to understand where HB is coming from. His son plays for Cooper! For a school not being open to long, they had a great football season last year but indeed lost a very, very important District game and as thus they tied with two other teams and the tie breaker didn't fall in their favor as the teams they played didn't measure up to the teams the other two teams played and beat (although they won 9 games).

 

It was the perfect storm (year) for Cooper and I think HB really understand that if there were only two teams that moved out of that District, Cooper would have been left at home with a 9-1 record and nothing else.

 

A ton of schools over the years have found themselves in the same boat, prior to the change of rules and IMHO, it has watered down Ky HS football. Lets go back to four divisions and make each game mean something and lets have competitive chapmionship games not like last year where only again IMHO two of the six games were close at the end!

I guess my only problem is the people who seem to complain about the football process don't have problems with other sports where every team gets in. Some can call it different (softball and baseball) but if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck it's a duck.

 

RCC tried to compare them as different byte young to say in softball and baseball the first part of the playoffs don't count. When in actuality a district tourney is just that, a playoff, and every team no matter what their record gets to play in it. Football doesn't have a district tourney like that and I have said over and over again I would be all for that and unlike softball and baseball, I would like it if every team didn't get to play in that, just the top 4 seeds based on like they seed now, through the reg season.

 

Its the idea that some say that district tourneys aren't a part of the p,ayoffs is ridiculous. You can't lose your games in the district tourney and move on, same in football, you can't lose and move on.

I agree. Football is completely different so I don't see why we need to try and do as they do. The argument that others sports do it so football should, and I will use words Hellbird used about some of my post, is lame and stupid.

Really, what would you call the first 2 rounds of play? They are a lot closer to Regionals than they are to Districts as you contend. They are actually some crappy hodge podge thrown todgether to make the 4-team system work.

There are two teams in the state 5A playoffs last year that had 0 district wins. Why can't they make a run? And if they did, then you could have a team with 0 district wins make it.

I get all that. I know their situation. My point is that all sports can come down to one or two games on your schedule and most of the time you know which games they are. If you don't win those games, you don't control your own destiny. Every sport has those scenarios and sometimes good teams are left out. The way to control that is to take care of business in those games. If you don't, you put fate in the hands of others.

 

Let me ask this, where do you stop then? If you let 4 in, you might as well let every team into the state playoffs. There aren't many that don't make it! Back to where do you stop. Let's say Trinity's district has 5 teams. All 5 of those teams are extremely good and beat up on each other in district play and they all demolish an above out of district schedule. May be ranked the top 5 teams in 6 A and are all from the same district. Now through district play, one of them isn't going to make it to the playoffs! Hypothetically, everyone knows the 5th place team in that district would have a shot at making a run at the state, but they aren't even going to get in the playoffs! So now they are left out. It's a shame, but they knew what they had to do, the games they had to win and they didn't do it. Cooper knew the game they lost last year could cost them. It didn't cost them much because they get to go through anyway. But think about how important that game would have been and the excitement around that game if it was deciding who even makes the playoffs! You must win the games that are must win games or you don't advance. that's not the case in KY football until you get to the state playoffs.

 

And you don't have to do very much to get to the state playoffs. Did you hear what I said "STATE PLAYOFFS". When you have 2 teams in 5A that didn't win a district game and more than half or the teams that made the "STATE PLAYOFFS" were below .600, that is pitiful and I can't believe we can say that teams "earn" their way to the state playoffs. Over half the teams back in. The fact is, sometimes good teams get left at home because they didn't take care of business.

 

My comparison to other sports is that it happens everywhere. We can all think back to our childhood and say if we would have just won 1 more game...well back then you were out. Now we say "well you didn't take care of business, but that doesn't matter, we'll let you in anyway as long as you don't finish last." Pitiful!!!
