Football Playoff Survey Released, Board Approves Results

Featured Replies

Yea, I'm a high school coach. So you are saying no football teams are eliminated by a district process???? Forget about a tournament at the end of a season vs a process used during the season. It's the same thing. In both sports, teams are eliminated by a district process. In football, all teams have a chance to not be eliminated in their district process by the performance against district opponents...just like the other sports. You can call a district tournament in the other sports playoffs if you want, but all it is is a way lot determine the district winners. So tell me how a football district with 5 teams is dwindled down to 4 prior to the playoffs? By a district tournament that is essentially held during the season on of regular scheduled games.

Answer this, does every football teams make the playoffs. You and I know the answer is no. Why not, because they get eliminated in district play. Why do only 2 teams move on in the other sports...because the others are eliminated in district play. Forget what it's called and when they are played the intention of the district competition, whether it be during the season like football or at the end of the season like other sports, it's still district play that determines who moves on.

I'll ask again, would you be comfortable if they now said the top 4 teams from each district are advancing in the other sports?

They are eliminated after the season in the playoffs, no basketball team is eliminated because they went 0-20 during the season and 0-6 in district play. They still go to a post season tournament.

Every team already advances to the post season tourney, the first rounds happen to be called the district tourney.

Your argument to reduce football teams to two teams after the season is crazy when you are fine with every team in every other sport making the post season tourney and then one of them losing and still advancing.

I'm guessing you coach basketball since you said you were a coach and all your thinking about is getting your players sooner with football ending quicker.

Wrong. Girls softball. And I coach at a school in nky that never gets its football players early. Figure that one out.

So the teams are eliminated at the end of the season based on what? Everyone makes it in football until the district results are known. Then teams are eliminated based on those district results! The issue is, 4 teams move on from the same size district that only two move on from the other sports.

And you want to talk about teams with a loss making in other sports??? Aren't we talking about football teams advancing to the region that may not even have a district win or have an overall losing record in football.

It's the same. Football, like all other sports have districts and regions. The the way the district winners and who moves on is different, but it's still districts.

Football used to be 2 teams advance and someone made the decision to make it 4. What if they made the top 4 teams from the district standings in other sports advanced. They could do it. Districts are the same size. Teams with losing records make the playoffs now in football, why not increase the number of teams in the other sports???

Besides the exceptions noted on this board, tell me why you feel a 3rd or 4th place team from a football district has earned a birth in a state playoff. And why a third or fourth place team in a district from another sport shouldn't be able to advance.

You say everyone in the other sports make the post season and has an opportunity to advance. I say every team in football also makes district play and has a an opportunity to advance.

Since I know softball, I'll give you an example. Ryle has dominated nky softball for the last 10 years. Just like always, they were considered a top team in the region. This year, they were upset and didn't make it out of the district because only 2 teams advance! So why should a football team that can't finish in the top two of their 4-6 team district advance to playoffs. It's absurd. Teams get left out all the time. But typically district play, whether it be softball or football, is designed to weed out weak teams. If you allow just about every team to advance in football, there is no need for districts. Heck, there can't be many that are left out. If you're going to take 4, why not take them all. There can't be much difference in 4th place teams vs 5th or even 6th place teams. In fact, I bet there are some 5th place teams that are way better than other districts 4th place teams. Just let them all in. Why not? Cause the others have earned their way in??? Yea right!

Okay, just a quick look at 5a. Just randomly chose that division.

Out of 32 teams, 12 of the playoff teams had 500 or below records. 2 of those teams had 0 district wins. Five other teams were 6-4. So more than half the teams in the state playoffs had records where they only won 60% of their games or less. Are you saying they EARNED the right to make the state playoffs. How can anyone that has a competitive bone in their body feel that is good??

The district title in softball is determined by the district tourney. Everyone get in. The district title for football is based on the district record at the end of the season. So the same applies. Everyone gets in. Just like softball.

My point is, in football, 4 move on from the district. In softball, 2 move on from their district. Just because the two sports have different methods to determine who moves on from a district doesn't mean they don't accomplish the same thing. There is elimination in football before they get to the playoffs. It's the district. Just like softball. They play a district tournament at the end of the season and 2 move on. In football, they play a round robin during the season and 4 move on from district competition. It's a process of elimination and both sports have a way to determine district winners and who gets eliminated. So if you call the softball district the beginning of the playoffs then the playoffs in football start at the first district game because that's when they start determine the district winner.

Both methods are designed to identify the position of the district and who moves on. Again, 4 move on and that's way too many.

So how would you feel if they came out and said now the top 4 teams from each district in baseball, softball, volleyball, and basketball, soccer are going to be moving on? It's exactly the same.

Every team in softball makes the tournament! It's the district tournament and every team makes it....what don't you understand about that?

Are you saying every softball team deserves to make the tournament? Because they do make it.

Are you saying every softball team deserves to make the tournament? Because they do make it.

So does every football team.

Every team in softball makes the tournament! It's the district tournament and every team makes it....what don't you understand about that?

Every football team also make the district. How they move on is different. Softball holds a tournament at the end of the season to determine who moves on. Football has their way of using the season results (within a district) to see who advances. Like I said if it were realisitic for football to have a district tournament at the end of the season, they would. In fact some on here have already said they tried and it didn't work out. So they came up with a different way to determine who advances from their district.

Should we allow 4 teams from each distict (which are the same size districts) to advance to the region in other sports? Why not? Just because the other sports use a different way to determine who moves on doesn't mean that both processes are intended for the same thing...to determine who moves on to regionals. They are exactly the same! The other sports could just as easily say the record vs your district opponents is what determines who moves on to represent the district. But the other sports lend themselves to tournament play to determine. The only reason football doesn't have a tournament is because of timing and the fact they can't play multiple games in a short time period. If they could they would.

Are you saying every softball team deserves to make the tournament? Because they do make it.

One last shot and you can tell me where I'm wrong. Let's compare Football and Softball:

*Do both sports have a process to determine who moves on from their district (forget what they call the process or when it happens). YES

*Are those district processes intended to eliminate the poor performers, determine a winner, and rank the rest by performance. YES

*For the district processes, are all teams within a district eligible to participate in district play in both sports. YES

*At the end of the district process, is there a clear definition of who moves on to the region in both sports? YES

The only difference at the end of the day is how each sport determines the district rankings and how many move on. I'll give you the fact that the other sports regular season are useless, other than to seed the district. But the results of both district processes are intended to do the same exact thing...be the first round of eliminating teams! Football moves 4 forward and the others sports move 2. They could very easily come out with a rule that now the other sports are going to move 4 on to the region and folks would be outraged. Why is it okay for football to move district winless and losing record teams on to compete in the region? Take the top two. And guess what, in that scenario, you still have a team that lost a district game moving on to the region...just like the other sports!!

Every team in softball makes the tournament! It's the district tournament and every team makes it....what don't you understand about that?

Are you this obtuse on purpose or is it genetically unavoidable? Personally, I don't like any comparison to other sports, but his argument is clear. You just won't consider it because it takes away your whole premise that all sports should be the same. When it is clear that football is completely different and should be treated as such. He's demonstrating that they are actually very similar.

I agree. Football is completely different so I don't see why we need to try and do as they do. The argument that others sports do it so football should, and I will use words Hellbird used about some of my post, is lame and stupid.

I never said all sports should be the same. RC is the one who compared football to softball and baseball and I picked up on it. RC makes it sound like the regular season doesn't matter in softball and baseball when in fact it does. The reg season just like football is used to rank the teams going into the playoffs, just like football.

He is under the assumption that the district tournament isn't part of the playoffs when in fact it is. You win in that tourney and you get to go on to regionals, just like football.

So is it you being obtuse or do you truly not know that districts are part of a playoff system in baseball?

Putting only 2 teams in is lame and stupid.

To correct you, footballs playoffs don't start with regionals so a team with 0 wins won't be playing for regional championship.

I think you need to understand where HB is coming from. His son plays for Cooper! For a school not being open to long, they had a great football season last year but indeed lost a very, very important District game and as thus they tied with two other teams and the tie breaker didn't fall in their favor as the teams they played didn't measure up to the teams the other two teams played and beat (although they won 9 games).

It was the perfect storm (year) for Cooper and I think HB really understand that if there were only two teams that moved out of that District, Cooper would have been left at home with a 9-1 record and nothing else.

A ton of schools over the years have found themselves in the same boat, prior to the change of rules and IMHO, it has watered down Ky HS football. Lets go back to four divisions and make each game mean something and lets have competitive chapmionship games not like last year where only again IMHO two of the six games were close at the end!
