Football Playoff Survey Released, Board Approves Results

Really, what would you call the first 2 rounds of play? They are a lot closer to Regionals than they are to Districts as you contend. They are actually some crappy hodge podge thrown todgether to make the 4-team system work.

What do you call the round of

Softball games at the end of the season that dictates who moves on to regionals? They are also made up of some crappy hodge podge teams thrown together to make a district tourney before regionals.

So we have tried to explain why we think 4 is too many. I'd like to hear your thoughts on why 4 is good for the state. Other than the one exception you experienced with Cooper last year.

A couple reasons why I don't have a big problem with 4 teams and will also give my reasons why I also think its not good.

1 If you limit it to only 2 teams you have a much greater chance of leaving out some of that years best teams in the state mainly due to the competiveness of some districts.

2. Teams that may tie for district champs would possibly be left out of a playoff, many come back and say the team should simply win but there are other factors such as when a team may be playing another team that has already clinched a playoff rests its players for the game which allows a team not as good to win which gives that team an advantage with the silly tie breaker rules khsaa has.

3 and to me the most important factor, better competition. Who wants a playoff that doesn't have some of the best teams in it? I always thought the playoffs were to decide the best teams in a class.

Reason I disagree with 4 team system.

1 there are too many classes with only 4 teams in their districts. I am not for all teams getting in which is why I like the 5 and 6 team districts.

Maybe a solution would be if you only have 4 teams in a district then only 3 or even 2 get in. If you only have 3 in then the 1 seed gets a bye the first week. If you have 2 in them first week is a bye.

As I said, I understand those who don't like 4 when there are only 4 in some districts, but don't punish those that have 5-6 teams in their districts.

To correct you, footballs playoffs don't start with regionals so a team with 0 wins won't be playing for regional championship.

Okay...Sorry for the technical mistake. Please replace "to compete in the region" with "to compete in the state playoffs" and answer the question and comment on the other part. You always just take bits and pieces and don't address the real questions.

Still, please justify why there is a need to advance 4 teams from a 4-6 team district to the state playoffs. State playoffs should be a privilege that is earned by the top teams in the district. In a 4 team district, 100% of the teams advance to the state playoffs. In a 5 team district 80% of the teams advance to the state playoffs. And in a 6 team district (which I don't think there are very many), 67% of the teams advance to the state playoffs. That sure doesn't seem like it's earned or that is "special" to make the playoffs. It sure wouldn't make me feel privileged or that I acheived some great accomplishment by saying:

"yea, my team made it to the state playoffs".

Other guy thinking to himself "So did just about everyone else!"

And then asks "Who did you play in the first round"

Response: "yea, we played (enter team name here)."

Other guy: "what was their record"

Response: "2-8"

other guy: "wow, how'd they do in their district?"

Response: "they didn't win a game"

Would you really be proud to say you made it to the state playoffs and won your first game. Other guy would be saying in the most polite way possible "Awwww Greeaaat" (notice the lack of the "!"). It's really kinda comical.

So we agree, they both have a district process to weed out the crappy hodge podge teams! Great.

Yes, the difference being that softball gets every team in and football doesn't.

Response to 1: You have that chance in every sport. Very good bball teams get knocked out of district play every year. How far down the line do you go before you finally say "okay, we have all the teams that have a shot now, whether they earned their shot of not" Heck football almost takes all the teams now!

Reponse to 2: It happens in all sports. Key words are "possibley left out". You can't account for every exception in any sport.

Response to 3: I thought I already showed you that more than half of the teams are terrible! And that doesn't even count the ones that played in a weak district and had a decent overall record from playing nobody. Add the teams with good records that were actually not very good and I would say 3/4 of the teams were very average to very bad. How is that a collection of the best. The best shine through when big games are on the line. If you're in a strong district, you better figure out a way to not put your destiny in fate's hand! Period! Not "back door" your way in with a second chance!

Since I know softball, I'll give you an example. Ryle has dominated nky softball for the last 10 years. Just like always, they were considered a top team in the region. This year, they were upset and didn't make it out of the district because only 2 teams advance! So why should a football team that can't finish in the top two of their 4-6 team district advance to playoffs. It's absurd. Teams get left out all the time. But typically district play, whether it be softball or football, is designed to weed out weak teams. If you allow just about every team to advance in football, there is no need for districts. Heck, there can't be many that are left out. If you're going to take 4, why not take them all. There can't be much difference in 4th place teams vs 5th or even 6th place teams. In fact, I bet there are some 5th place teams that are way better than other districts 4th place teams. Just let them all in. Why not? Cause the others have earned their way in??? Yea right!

Ryle was not eliminated because of a regular season loss they were eliminated in the state playoffs, just like football teams are.

How do you not understand that the "District Tourney" IS part of the state playoffs?

Every Softball team has an opportunity to play in the Dist Tourney and advance even if they lost every game during the season. In football the top 4 teams in a district advance to the state playoffs in softball every team advances to the state playoffs.

Yes, the difference being that softball gets every team in and football doesn't.

you're saying every football team doesn't get a chance to win their district and earn a right to move on or be eliminated???

you're saying every football team doesn't get a chance to win their district and earn a right to move on or be eliminated???

Wow...ok let me try and explain this again. Every team in football has a chance to win their district during the regular season. Guess what? So does every softball team.

Even after that chance, softball teams that don't win their district during the regular season get another opportunity to try again in the tournament at the end of the season, every football team does not.

Ryle was not eliminated because of a regular season loss they were eliminated in the state playoffs, just like football teams are.

Every football team has an opportunity to play in their district too (like you said, every team gets in)...where some are advanced and some are eliminated...just like softball. Just because they can't play a tournament at the end of the year doesn't mean they are not doing the exact same thing. It doesn't matter what you call it, when it's played, how it's played, the fact is the first round of elimination for any sport is your distict. Whatever the process...the district process creates a clear winner and places the other teams appropriately. Football's first elimination is the district process and so is softball's. You can keep calling playoffs and comparing it that way, but relistically forget the work playoff even exists for either sport. The first round of eliminating teams comes in district play for both sports. HOW they determine it is different (one during the season because they can't have an end of the season tournament and one at the end of the season tournament because it does lend itself to tournament play. The districts still accomplish the exact same thing...weed out the weaker teams, crown a winner and place the other teams appropriately. Football moves 4 on from that process and the other sports move two.

Why do the other sports advance two teams if it's a playoff. Becuase you can call it playoff if you want, but it's really to identify the top teams to represent your district the rest of the way. It's not really a playoff if a second place team is advancing. After district, only one advances. Again, the districts are used to setup the true playoffs. If the other sports take two now and one is not a winner, what would keep them from taking 4 like football? You know, a lot of good teams get eliminated in districts!

Response to 1: You have that chance in every sport. Very good bball teams get knocked out of district play every year. You are wrong. Let me try this again.

Take your 1 response. Every bball team does get to play for the state title and it's not during the regular season. It's called district tournament which is part of the state tournament.

your response #2 yes you are right, there will always be exceptions to every rule, but isn't it better to limit the number of exceptions? with a 2 team format there will be a higher number of exceptions which will basically come down to a coin toss to decide who gets to move on and who doesn't, why not let them settle it on the field where it should be settled?

3. Who cares? Like I said, what is your hatred with all those teams in the first place? They will settle it on the field and you keep ignoring the fact that not every team gets in the playoffs. Cooper has played for 5 years and were only in the playoffs 2 times. You want to know how many times their baseball and softball teams were in? 5!

Every football team has an opportunity to play in their district too (like you said, every team gets in)...where some are advanced and some are eliminated...just like softball. Just because they can't play a tournament at the end of the year doesn't mean they are not doing the exact same thing. I give up :isurrender:

Maybe if we spoke face to face we would understand one another but you and I are not understanding what each other is saying...that's cool...have a great day!

Wow...ok let me try and explain this again. Every team in football has a chance to win their district during the regular season. Guess what? So does every softball team.

Even after that chance, softball teams that don't win their district during the regular season get another opportunity to try again in the tournament at the end of the season, every football team does not.

I coach varsity softball. Here's where you are wrong. Every softball team does not have a chance to win their district during the regular season. The only chance softball has to win their district is in the district tournament. The regular season in softball virtually means nothing. I hate to say it, but it's the truth. That's what I'm trying to tell you. We don't win anything until districts are decided. Same with football. But because football can't have a end of the season tournament, they determine their district rankings and who moves on by the records against other district teams. Essentially, they do play a round robin tournament within the season!! We play our tournament at the end of the season. That's the only difference. All football teams are eligilbe to win their district from day one. Just like softball. If softball wasn't able to have a tournament at the end of the season for whatever reason, they would do the same thing as football. And if they did the same thing as football, they would still only advance 2 teams!!!!

Every football team has an opportunity to play in their district too (like you said, every team gets in)...where some are advanced and some are eliminated...just like softball. Just because they can't play a tournament at the end of the year doesn't mean they are not doing the exact same thing. You are so wrong!! lol

You keep saying over and over again that softball only advances 2 to the playoffs, no they don't, they advance EVERY TEAM. Every team gets to play in the district tournament which is part of the state tournament.

Why do you keep getting that wrong? I thought you coached softball? You should know more about that sport than me when it comes to how to get to the state championship game.

The way you keep trying to make softball look would make me think you shouldn't even have a regular season at all because no matter what every single team gets to the post season. Football everyteam does not get to the post season. Once you realize that fact then you will understand how the playoffs work the way they do.

Softball regular season means nothing, Football regular season means a lot.

Take Cooper's district for example.

Cooper softball could lose every single game in the regular season and still get to play in the post season.

Cooper basbeall can lose every single game in the regular season and still get to play in the post season.

Cooper Football can lose every game in the regular season and they do not play in the post season.

What do you call the round of

Softball games at the end of the season that dictates who moves on to regionals? They are also made up of some crappy hodge podge teams thrown together to make a district tourney before regionals.

You keep saying you don't want to compare them, but you keep throwing other sports in. I asked a specific question about the First two rounds of the FOOTBALL playoffs. That's what you were commenting on, so that's what I asked you about. I know you can't keep a continuous thought going in your responses, but pleast stick the the topic we were referring to and answer MY QUESTION

btw... I call the first round of Baseball and Softball postseason play Districts. Never said otherwise. You keep missing the point. He's telling you that in Football, you have a District Playoff during the regular season. Then essentially the first games of the playoffs would be considered regionals since you are already playing outside your district. GOOD LORD!
