Football Playoff Survey Released, Board Approves Results

Featured Replies

What you are explaining about softball is the same thing, they play in the playoffs, wether it be district playoffs or not it's still playoffs. Same as baseball.

And so does football, just a different format. Football has district champs and runner up, just like softball. However, football moves the top 4 forward and softball moves 2. Forget about what they name it and think about the process of eliminating in the first round. The first elimination step is the district in both sports. Football's district takes place during the season and softballs district takes place at the end of the season. Every football team has the chance to compete for the district, just like softball. If you guys want to look at it as a playoff for all sports, them playoffs are when teams start to get eliminated. That means the first round of the football playoffs are in the regular season. Because teams get eliminated by their record vs district opponents. If you say district play is the first round of the playoffs for softball, I can live with that. But then that also means that the first elimination process for football is the regular season. And football allows 4 teams to advance (to many in my opinon) and softball only allows the top two to advance...in the first round of eliminations or "weeding out" process.

While I do not subscribe to your view of what Regular Season district play is, I certainly see your point and where you are coming from.

All I mean there is...if there are 6 teams in a district, 2 of them will not advance to the high school playoffs. Therefore, they were eliminated by district play. They all had the same opportunities at the beginning of the year, but if their record against the other district teams were not as 4 other teams, they are eliminated, essentially if you compare that to softball, it's the equivilent of the district tournament. They are both the first process in eliminating teams. They are both the first process for rewarding the better teams and allowing them to move on to play other districts and state teams. The format may be different and they may call them different things, but at the end of the day both those processes are the first step of the weeding out process. Like I said, if football could play more than one game a week, there's no doubt there would be a district tournament at the end of the season to determine who moves on. Their alternative to figuring out who moves on is by counting the reocords of the regular season district games. Essentially, that's their district tournament. At the end, some move one and some get left behind. I say too many move on.

As for those praising the baseball/softball/basketball way of doing things...really? You can go into the playoffs and lose your second or third game and move on to the regionals. How can you guys justify a Playoff Loser moving on?

Wow, not praising how they do things as far as the format. We all know the sports are different. I'm saying once the process is complete (whatever that process is), after the first round of district eliminations in softball, 2 teams move on. After the first round of the district elimination process in football, 4 teams move on. I don't care how they determine who moves on, the fact is too many move on in football!

It's this easy, how many teams moved on from your district play last year in football? How many baseball/softball teams moved on after their district play last year? Define district play before you answer. What is district play in football? And what is district play in softball?

For those that are saying that playoff games should be within the district the first 2 rounds remember we did that a few years ago and it was almost universally disliked. Lots of times you had teams playing the same opponent in back-to-back weeks. I realize that the final RS game is a non-district game now but do you really want to play someone for a second time that you just played 2 or 3 weeks earlier? Only way around that is to play RS district games in the first few weeks of the season and I really doubt that many people want that.

And that is why I have stated reduce the number Divisions to four and increase the size of the number of Districts to six!

No longer will teams have to worry about scheduling games, no longer will the District games mean nothing and more importantly fans will come to those first round games as they will be competitive!

I think you are close. But the math does not work.

Now, how about 7 teams per 'district'. Now the math is: 7 (teams) x 8 (districts/class) x 4 (classes) = 222 teams. I believe depending new schools and consolidations there are between 220 and 225 school in Kentucky. So 7/8/4 works very, very well.

This setup would similar to Indiana. Indiana uses blind-draw for their 3 week 'sectional' tournament. I have found coaches (and some fans) do not like the idea of pure blind draw. No reward for being the district champion basically. OK, then what about brackets?

Proposed playoff bracket with seeding would look like this first week:

1 - bye (a reward for winning district, get to rest/heal up and extra weekend practice during bye week).

2 vs 5 (2 would be favored but in tight districts this may be yield a good number of upsets across the state)

3 vs 4 (should be the most competative game week 1)

6 vs 7 (yes, everyone is in the playoffs, even the 0-10 teams. But their first game is against another less than strong team. They actually have a chance to win a post-season game. And its not a definite blow out. The players actually have something to fight for and the coaches of the lesser teams have a chance to play and even win a post season game - something that helps them with their school and parents and gives the coach something to build on for the future.)

Second week would simply be 1 vs. the 6/7 winner (ok, maybe not a competative game in most circumstances but at least the lower seed has a win and some momentum so it should may be marginally better than most 1 vs. 4 matchups that occur in the first week now). Then the 2/5 winner vs. the 3/4 winner (this would certainly have a strong chance of being competitive). And week 3 of district championships would be the winners.

Then the district champions play in the state championship tournament (I would separate the two 'tournaments' for marketing purposes and to give the districts championships their own identity). Maybe this blind draw to mix things up (this would fix the 'rotation issue' of 6A and just make things more interesting and varied year to year. The current set path year after year is simply boring anyway.)

Positives: a) all teams in post season, b) 'bottom feeder' (no disrespect intended at all) teams actually get a competitive first round. c) there is a reward for being the 'regular season champions' of the district that carries into playoffs.

Negatives: a) six-week of playoffs (OK, either drop the bye week or go to 9 games since ALL teams will get the 10th game by ensuring that all teams are in playoffs.)

To fix that you simply move the start of district play to week 3 and finish the season with out of district opponents.

The good reason is sports are made to be competitive and teach life lessons. By allowing just about every team to move on (out of districts) does not teach a good life lesson. In fact, it teaches that you can be rewarded for mediocre work ethic, performance, desire or passion. Everyone moves on, so why work so hard? It doesn't teach that only the best survive in the real world and you must bust your tail everyday to maintain your advantage. That you must drive for perfection. It doesn't teach failure (that is a huge part of life). It doesn't teach how to deal with failure and how to move on. It's the everyone gets a trophy mentality that is absolutely killing our youth. Some are saying, everyone should have an opportunity to play in a playoff game. I say bull crap!!! You must earn things in life and sending teams with losing records and horrible results to a playoff game is not teaching those kids anything. In fact it's hurting them because they will grow used to things being handed to them. It's rediculous and I can't believe more and more people buy into this nonsense.

Life lessons? So if you go to the playoffs and lose, there isn't a life lesson learned? Isn't it the same life lesson if your a 5th seed and don't get in?

Life lessons?

You say it's the everyone gets a trophy type of thing. Let me know where we are supposed to pick up our trophy's from because 2 years ago we got nothing for going to the playoffs and losing.

Where is all the backlash about the baseball and softball playoffs? There, as we already pointed out, every team gets in. Every single team gets to play in the district tournament for the right to move on, same as basketball. Football is the only sport of all those that aren't garunteed to let you play in the playoffs, yet it is the most scrutinized of them all because people say too many teams get to play. I just don't understand the logic. The sport that plays the least amount of games is the same sport that people complain there are too many games in lol

I give up, I will just wait for the threads about 1st round blowouts so I can prove those folks wrong lol

The district title in softball is determined by the district tourney. Everyone get in. The district title for football is based on the district record at the end of the season. So the same applies. Everyone gets in. Just like softball.

My point is, in football, 4 move on from the district. In softball, 2 move on from their district. Just because the two sports have different methods to determine who moves on from a district doesn't mean they don't accomplish the same thing. There is elimination in football before they get to the playoffs. It's the district. Just like softball. They play a district tournament at the end of the season and 2 move on. In football, they play a round robin during the season and 4 move on from district competition. It's a process of elimination and both sports have a way to determine district winners and who gets eliminated. So if you call the softball district the beginning of the playoffs then the playoffs in football start at the first district game because that's when they start determine the district winner.

Both methods are designed to identify the position of the district and who moves on. Again, 4 move on and that's way too many.

So how would you feel if they came out and said now the top 4 teams from each district in baseball, softball, volleyball, and basketball, soccer are going to be moving on? It's exactly the same.

No after the first round half of the teams are eliminated in football. The fact that the 1 is playing the 4, 2 is playing 3 but they are from another district is no different than if they played only within their own district, teams are still eliminated at the same rate form the playoffs.

In the other sports you have say 4 teams in a district tourney the play TWO rounds and still advance TWO teams, one of which just lost.

Look at it this way...it takes 5 games to win a state championship in football. It takes from 7 to 9 games depending on district make up to win in Basketball, Baseball and Softball.

EVERY TEAM IN BASKETBALL, BASEBALL and SOFTBALL ADVANCE to the playoffs...how do you not understand this!!! In each of those sports 8 teams make the Regional Tourney. The District Tourney DOES count as Playoffs!!!

Football has no district playoffs but have an 8 team regional tournament that starts in the first round of the playoffs.

No after the first round half of the teams are eliminated in football. The fact that the 1 is playing the 4, 2 is playing 3 but they are from another district is no different than if they played only within their own district, teams are still eliminated at the same rate form the playoffs.

No, some are eliminated prior to the first round based on the district outcome. If there are 5 or six teams in a district, only 4 move on. The teams that finish top in their district.

What is so great about these other sports that make some of you think we should pattern our football system after theirs or we are being short changed if we don't?

Yea, I'm a high school coach. So you are saying no football teams are eliminated by a district process???? Forget about a tournament at the end of a season vs a process used during the season. It's the same thing. In both sports, teams are eliminated by a district process. In football, all teams have a chance to not be eliminated in their district process by the performance against district opponents...just like the other sports. You can call a district tournament in the other sports playoffs if you want, but all it is is a way lot determine the district winners. So tell me how a football district with 5 teams is dwindled down to 4 prior to the playoffs? By a district tournament that is essentially held during the season on of regular scheduled games.

Answer this, does every football teams make the playoffs. You and I know the answer is no. Why not, because they get eliminated in district play. Why do only 2 teams move on in the other sports...because the others are eliminated in district play. Forget what it's called and when they are played the intention of the district competition, whether it be during the season like football or at the end of the season like other sports, it's still district play that determines who moves on.

I'll ask again, would you be comfortable if they now said the top 4 teams from each district are advancing in the other sports?

What is so great about these other sports that make some of you think we should pattern our football system after theirs or we are being short changed if we don't?

How do they determine those 8 teams?

And you're okay with the fact a team can finish last or have the mentality "if we just don't come in last" in a 5 team district, they earn a right to play in the region. In the other sports, only 1 and two make it out of district. Again, what if the top 4 made it out in the other sports. Districts are the same size as football. Why not take 4 of 4 or 4 out of 5 BBall teams to the region? Now that sounds ludicrous, but that's exactly what's happening in football.
