Not sure why a school wouldn't vote? Obviously the closing schools wouldn't. And I guess I understand schools like Danville or Fort Campbell, because they got new head coaches and perhaps the vote got lost in the shuffle. But why wouldn't the others vote? And schools like DeSales, Glasgow and Hazard are strong football programs that would seem to want their voice heard.

Looking at my team, I'm surprised Warren Central voted for 4 teams. Since the expansion of the playoffs to 4 teams Central has only qualified twice as a 4 seed, and only four more times as a 3 seed. They were 1-2 as a 4 seed, 2-4 as a 3 seed, losing in the first round 4 times combined. It'd be a rare occasion that taking only two teams would knock them out of the playoffs.

 

Personally, I'm fine with 4 teams, but like gchs_uk9, I'm only fine with it with less classes to force larger districts. I just don't like the idea of a team that doesn't have to win a single game making the playoffs. The travel is so much more prohibitive than basketball or baseball, which is why comparing it to those sports where everyone gets in is not apples to apples. A team in the playoffs that doesn't belong there is essentially a waste of everyone's time and money.

I can't speak for all the schools that voted for the two team format, but I know Raceland voted that way because we almost always host a first round game and loose a great deal of money each time. Our first round opponents, nothing against them, normally bring, maybe, 50 fans. And a certain number of our fans don't think coming to that game is worth it, and no one from other schools are coming to that game because vertically everyone makes the playoffs and they have games plus, they know the first round game is not going to be close. So, the causal fans stay home, the fans of the other school stay home, and some of our fans stay home. And, we still have to pay for the opposing team's travel. We lose money, it's not about the blow outs.

I still get a kick out of the people who whine about blowouts as if they only occur in the first round when in fact blowouts are all throughout the playoffs, and 3 and 4 seeds are sometimes the teams blowing out 1 and 2 seeds.

There is no harm in having 4 teams per district. Let the kids play, you never know what can happen. The kids play their hearts out all year, let them enjoy post season if they make it. Especially for the seniors each year, could be the very last time they strap on the pads.

I agree 100%, it's not about getting "Participation Trophies." It is about kids getting to play as much football as possible.

 

More teams means more football gets played...the more football the better.

and yes my school voted to go back to 2 teams...but I disagree with them.

Blowouts are not fun, especially for the losing team, but I never hear the players complaining about having to play another game.

Kinda surprised by the list of schools that voted for only top 2, many of these schools would not make the playoffs in that format most years.

 

Maybe that is the point. The 'extra game' rationalization may not work for those who are in a solid 4 slot.

I'm totally in favor of four teams making the playoffs IF you can guarantee each district has at least five teams. And the only way to do that would be to drop to five classes.

 

Until someone challenges KHSAA on the likely unconstitutional setup of football classes this will not likely happen.
