Correct. Mayfield is in 1A, NCC is in 2A in reference to NKYfootballfan91's comment about the two not being in the same class.

Also, if Beechwood's coaches are so poor, how come they get to the semi finals year after year even in down years? Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the BGP playoff preview have Frankfort beating Beechwood in the regional finals? Most posters on this site had Frankfort whipping Beechwood in that game. Well, not only did Beechwood win, but it wasn't even close! Furthermore, everybody brings up the fact that Beechwood has never beaten Mayfield. This is true, they haven't, but nobody mentions the years of 2004, 2007, and 2008 when Beechwood won the state titles and thumped Danville, Frankfort, and Crittenden Co., all of whom beat Mayfield those years. Does that mean in those years Mayfield's coaching was not good? No, it means sometimes you have the horses and sometimes you don't. The fact that Beechwood continuously gets to the semis even when they aren't as talented is a credit to their coaching. If Mayfield would have gotten through to play Beechwood in those years then we wouldn't be having this conversation, because it would have been 3 losses for Mayfield!

Also, anybody wanting to debate just how big of an X Factor Jonathan Jackson was, need look no further than the 2012 state title game when he played virtually on one leg with a sprained MCL and Hazard dominated them on both sides of the ball. He was a shell of himself and Mayfield had no answers without him.

However, I will agree the early rounds in all the classes are easier these days. I don't think there is any competitive difference once you get to the final 8 in almost every class. Class 1A is one where the quarterfinals were tougher in the 4 class system.

No shame in not beating Beechwood. My point is they are a very good team year in and year out and a tough opponent for anyone in the stats quarterfinals.

2012 - Ky. Country Day, Williamsburg, Frankfort, Pikeville

2011 - Lou. Holy Cross, Frankfort, Williamsburg, Fairview

2010 - Lou. Holy Cross, Frankfort, Fairview, Pikeville

2009 - Crittenden Co., Bellevue, Raceland, Harlan

2008 - Mayfield, Frankfort, Raceland, Pikeville

2007- Mayfield, Lou. Holy Cross, Pikeville, Campbellsville

 

I don't consider any of those teams weak sisters. There is still tough competition from the quarterfinals on in 1A.

Did you really just mention Holy Cross? You mean the same Holy Cross that has never beaten Beechwood? Or the one that was beaten 69-26 by Beechwood in the year they won their state title? C'mon!

 

Yeah I said Holy Cross. Would Beechwood have rather lost to Holy Cross 69-26 and won the state title that year or have beaten the Indians 69-26 and been bounced in the playoffs again with no ring? Give me the title Alex. Beechwood seems to have the priorities mixed up for old time sports fans these days. Good at band-win state. Football-pave the Panthers. Geez.

You make this site fun, I posted the NCC stuff just to see what you would come up with and I must say I was not disappointed. So..........we should have made thread title to include NCC coaches as compared to Rash and Morris

Without doubt it would have taken the legend of MY down a few notches but I still think he was great back then. Bw's 95 title loss to Mf I recall being shocked that Bw played us so well. I recall most all of Mf really expecting the title to be a sure win and MY quickly earned my respect that day and nearly took my trophy up north

Very, very little. Beechwood was beating everyone during that run. They were tougher than tough.

One factor that needs to be strongly considered in comparing today to the 90's - the style of football. Evolution of the passing game, spread offenses, etc. makes winning today more difficult IMO. The style played by Beechwood in the 90's would not have the same results today. The best example of this is New Cath. Once Schneider changed the offense, they became much more of a power. This is the one area where I think Rash and his offensive coaches need to get better - passing the ball. We talk about halftime adjustments by coaches. My somewhat rusty memory tells me that Beechwood has crawled into their power game shell in the second half of games and that has hurt them as much as anything in the Mayfield games. The times have changed from great power football being all you need to win. History referred to Holy Cross winning that title. They won for one reason - their QB did an incredible job offensively in the playoffs with their passing offense. If you aren't effective throwing the ball, you aren't going to win a title.
