What team is better coached, Mayfield or Beechwood?

Featured Replies

IMO, one is living on previous coaches laurels.

Rash has been head coach for seven years. Here is a comparison of Rash's seven years versus Yeagle's last seven years.

Championships

Rash - 2

Yeagle - 2

Runner-up

Rash - 0

Yeagle - 2

Final 4

Rash - 4

Yeagle - 0

Lost before Final 4

Rash - 1

Yeagle - 3

The only time Rash lost before the final 4, he lost to the eventual champion.

Overall Record

Rash ... 76-22

Yeagle ... 80-17

Conclusion

There is very little difference in the results. What Yeagle accomplished in the 90's was almost mystical. However, as you look at the above, it is clear to see there is no drop off in Beechwood's performance under Coach Rash. He is doing an incredible job and has to be considered one of the top coaches in the state.

Z5 after last years game had this to say "It was obvious to me what was going to happen in the 2nd half. Excellent coaches evaluate and adjust. That's what MF did.Game plans are one thing, the ability to evaluate and adjust is another. They were having limited success on the ground in the 1st half and several missed opportunity's in the passing game, they adjusted and the rest is history. Plain and simply exposing BW biggest weakness. Pass D. Again, MF coaching staff did an excellent job and their collective experience was evident."

VOR after last year's game said " It is easy to say Jonathon Jackson and use that as an "excuse". But there is much more to it than that. The thought that comes to mind is the Mayfield coaches made adjustments that worked and Beechwood didn't. How else do you explain it? All you can do is tip your hat and say congratulations to the Cardinals. They have Beechwood figured out and Beechwood can't figure them out. I need to think about this one a little more to try and make some sense out of it. "

Wildcat said after the 2010 game that "I miss M.Y.!" This led to...

Quickslick feeling differently saying " I have a feeling that the result would not have been much different, if any, even with Yeagle."

Of course there was the "Frosh Champs Talk" yet that still was not enough to get the Tigers past Mf

I have said for years that the biggest difference in the 2 programs has been the styles of play. I feel Rash is still doing things somewhat old school while Mayfield's coaches adjusted to the times and no longer are 1 dimensional.

To me it's even close, plus Mf's assistant coaches are as good as you can find, some with previous head coach experience

Question to the Mayfield fans ... if Mayfield had lost in the title game last year, would the fans be questioning their coach for getting one title in the 4 year Jonathon Jackson era?

I dont think its coaching for the most part. I believe Mayfield has had better talent other than 2011 when it was pretty equal and Mayfield had home field.

Probably

Good question, IDK? At Mf titles are expected and I think I recall a for sale sign in Joes front yard after the terrible season in 2008 I think. For me I am not sure but I am sure I would not be a happy camper

A question for you VOR, why did you call it the Jackson era?

Because Jackson is that good ... on both sides of the ball. He is one of the few players I have ever said that single-handedly can win a football game. I know the Mayfield crowd will jump me over this one, but without Jackson Beechwood wins 2 years ago by 2 TD's. Last year's game would have gone down to the wire with no Jackson. Jackson started on defense his freshman year and it has been the Jackson era ever since IMO.

You always forget VOR to throw in that sticky change from 4 classes to 6 in KY. Happened during Rash's reign.

Makes Rash's A schedule even easier. Compare records of the two coaches vs. CCH and NCC during their reign. The "mystical" state championships for Yeagle speak for themselves. Rash also plays nowhere near the out of district schedule that Yeagle used to. Last year Beechwood lost to Holmes. The Holmes coach was asked to leave after the season.

Beating Dayton and Ludlow and Bellevue is nice. I'll put Rash near the top when he can beat Mayfield. Can't beat them at home. Can't beat them on the road. Can't beat them when he has a big team. Can't beat them when he has a speedy team. Just can't beat Mayfield Sam I Am.

Rash's squads have not made the necessary adjustments and Mayfield is now their archrival and Rash can't seem to figure out a way beat them.

(By the way I think Noel is one of the nicest human beings on the planet)= (Means diddly when coaching championship high school football)

One could argue that what Yeagle did was against much tougher competition in the 4 class system vs what Rash has done in the 6 class system.

But you yourself said for at least the first 2 years, (and I think it was actually first 3) of Jackson's career that Jackson was not, well here are your own words

VOR said "TP ... I will give you my honest opinion but you won't like it. He is a very good player but not what you guys are hyping him to be. A very hard runner who breaks tackles. Very good speed. Personally, if I had to choose between your sophomore Jackson and our sophomore Max Nussbaum, I would take Nussbaum. That is no slight to Jackson because Nussbaum is a great player. So is Jackson. He isn't a Shelton, but not many are."

"If you have access to the stats, please tell me how many tackles Jackson had and how many Staten had for Beechwood. I really don't know but it seemed like Beechwood's linebacker Staten was everywhere. In fact, look up the number of tackles Oronia made for Mayfield too. It seemed like I heard his name more than Jackson. I don't think anyone is missing the point on Jackson if you are saying he is one of the better linebackers in 1A. He undoubtedly is. But the way you guys are hyping him, I expected more. Athletically, Shelton was undoubtedly more impressive. Jackson is impressive and everyone from Beechwood will tell you that. But I have seen several linebackers over the past few years that impressed me as much if not more."

You didn't seem that high on him or feel it would be the Jackson era back then. He was awesome but to try and say he is the only reason we have been to the last 4 state title games is an insult to the program that is 5th in the Nation in wins and owns a lot of state titles before there was ever a JJ wearing the Cards uniform. The stats from 2 years ago tell a little different story as well. Until the last Bw drive the Tigers didn't have a second half first down after Mf made COACHING adjustments and stats wise the Cards outgained Bw by a decent margin. Without our young qb making some bad throws which were uncharacteristic the Cards win that game by atleast a couple scores in my opinion even with JJ.

Yeah, we'll if you take away a blown call in 10 and hightchew not getting hurt in the first quarter of 11, you wouldn't be saying that and IDE still be saying the same thing.

Took a blown call in overtime to beat NCC in 10 and with hightchew out most the game in 11, beechwood wins 29-20 at home. Lets not forget the bogus offside call on the opening KO which resulted in a rekick and a KO return in 11.....

Honestly, the 11 beechwood team was the better of the last three seasons. By the way, NCC has won 2 out of the last 3 2A state titles, how many 1A titles has beechwood won in that time?

How many times in the last 3 years did NCC play Mayfield? Do you honestly think NCC could have gone through Mayfield and Jackson to win those 2 titles? Beechwood has had ample injuries and blown calls as well so let's not even go there. Woulda, shoulda, coulda. It means nothing. All teams have adversity at times.

The 2010 team, yes. 2012, don't think so. And you can't compare Beechwood's injuries to Brady Hightchew getting hurt in that game, so an inexperienced Josh Cain came in and got sacked about 10 times. As far as a blown call, we don't even know for sure either way so let's not get on that topic. All I know is anyone saying anything about NCC losing to BW recently needs to realize the game is always close and can go either way, and is truly one of the best rivalries around. Not to mention NCC isn't complaining that every year since 2005 that they've lost to BW, they have went on to win state (aside from 2011). Oh yeah, did I mention how the 2005 NCC team that beat Mayfield 42-7 in the state title game lost to BW 24-21 that year? Then BW went on to get killed by LCA in the playoffs. You just can't look at the NCC vs. BW game and predict any results based on it because it's just not going to be accurate, so just don't drag NCC into this topic. It's about BW's coaches vs. Mayfield's, and Mayfield's has the edge based on the recent track record.

You talk about the "blown" call in overtime in the 2010 game. When the score was 25-15 Beechwood, NCC missed a field goal wide right that was ruled good. Take that away and the game never goes to overtime. As for the 2011 game, Hightchew was hurt late in the second quarter and Beechwood's starting QB never suited up. Nussbaum started QB and didn't play the second half do to a concussion, so Beechwood played the entire second half with their 3rd string QB. Oh,and by the way, Beechwood took a knee on the 1 yard line or the score would have been worse.

NCC has no room to say much, they have not faired much better against a Morris led Mayfield team having only managed to beat Mf 1 time and that was in a driving rain storm or that would have been a Mf win as well. NCC certainly should thank their lucky stars for having not been in Mf's class lately or they would be the ones this thread would be about. Last year would and 10 would have been massacres.

I think this year will be the real test of Mayfield's staff...they will still be Mayfield, but it will be interesting to see just how good they are when the get-out-of-jail card is gone...not saying they still won't be in the 1A title game, just that I'm interested to see them without JJ.
