Food Network Cuts Paula Deen Loose

Featured Replies

What about asking black employees to dress up as slaves for her personal events? I recall reading something like that as well about her. That seems to go beyond a flippant racial epithet in private company.

Again, accusations which she has denied being presented as facts.

Deen said she remembered telling Jackson and another employee about a restaurant she went to with an exclusively African-American waitstaff that she wanted to emulate, but was worried about the potential reaction.

If it was used in a racially insensitive way then yes sure. If she asked people to dress up as slaves then that's not bad IMO. People do it all the time for movies and other stuff so why not a cooking show?

She admitted to referring to a guy that robbed her as an n-word and said she had used it at other times as well.

To me it's simple. They made a business decision that she and the bad publicity that is coming with this is not worth what she brings. No different than Imus.

I don't care one way or the other. They get to run their business like they wish.

BINGO! That is the real reason her contract was not renewed.

What is the statute of limitations on past bad words? How far back should something that you said be held against you? Or is calling someone a racial epithet, making fun of a disability, color of their hair or making fun of them because religious beliefs, like murder with no Statute of limitations?

I know many on BGP have NEVER EVER said anything off color or if they did were NEVER overheard, but for those of us that have said something we regret are we doomed for life?

This is what really caught my eye as well. Scripps, which owns Food Network, moved fast to part ways. I think her shtick had grown old, anyway. One complaint I have with Food Network is they tend to keep some of these shows-celebs going well past their expiration date. Emeril and "Iron Chef" come to mind.

I think her PR handlers totally dropped the ball in the aftermath, which was a big reason why FN dropped her. She skipped out on a Today Show interview and was not reachable by anyone. That would be like Dick Cheney skipping out on an interview with Fox News. Then she made some odd Youtube videos apologizing, which were then pulled. Too much bad PR. Not too mention, Food Network is trying to be younger and hipper, which is why people like Emeril, Mario Batali, Sara Moulton, and Wolfgang Puck either left or were not asked to return.

There was word when FN and Emeril parted ways, they wanted Paul Deen to take over his show but they decided against it because they weren't sure what would come out of her mouth on a live show.

The whole Cookbook for Kids fiasco a couple of years ago coupled with her hawking diabetes medicine in spite of her recipes I think was just too much for the FN to overcome with her.

Not in any way dismissing what she said. But to me the worst things she did are:

1. Promoting her over-the-top recipes for several years while she secretly knew her diet had given her diabetes.

2. Hawking diabetes drugs while continuing to cook in said style.

^^ Couple that with the PR fallout from her Old South reminiscing and that was the third strike IMO

It could have been genetic, hard to tell where diabetes come from. If it was caused by poor eating habits I would have it.

That said I get what your saying.

Pretty simple, if you are a national icon, you can't do this in any way and survive the onslaught. Really you can't do this in any walk of life and not have some repercussion. I am in her generation and heard that word a lot but never used it that I can ever recall. This was abusiness decision that really left the FN with no choice. It is really sad that we have these type of issues today.

Not Jerry Tipton @NotJerryTipton

Every hip-hop artist ever was just fired by the Food Network

She should have never fixed Blackened Chicken.

I want to make sure I understand how the PC police work.

Paula Deen, an entertainer, admits to using a racially offensive word in a private setting about no one in particular and gets canned.

Bill Mahar, an enteratiner, uses an offensive term to describe the child of someone he disagrees with politically ON NATIONAL TELEVISION but that's fine.

Gotcha.. Gotta learn how that whole double standard thing works.

Food Network is beholden to advertisers. HBO is not. Also, wasn't Maher fired by ABC before HBO picked up the show? Perhaps Fox will hire Paula Deen and pair her with Sarah Palin.

AT, that is completely false.

They each get to say what they want. Each business then gets to decide if that person is right for their business. Putting it the way you did is not indicative of your normal ability to understand an issue.
