April 24, 201313 yr I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who goes bonkers when seeing such blatant, elementary misuse of the language. It's not rocket science!! All it takes is the reading a couple decently written pieces of work to cement into one's mind the differences between you're/your, their/there/they're, to/two/too, etc. And forgive me, but I can't help but be a bit judgmental the moment I hear or see some of these things. I mean seriously...turn off the tv and read a book. Gosh, even a decent children's book will get you going in the right direction. For me, it is the obvious lack of personal pride that is most discouraging. I can't help but think that same lack of pride carries through with on the rest of their activities as well. Oh...and count me in the group that refuses to use abbreviations when texting and quickly corrects any typos. I have no idea why I feel so compelled to do so. Actually, for me, it causes a small amount of anxiety if I realize an error slipped through on a text or e-mail without me being able to fix it. It's a strange, annoying obsession, to say the least.

April 24, 201313 yr I am a Grammar Nazi and between texting and social media I swear I am losing my mind. And before I begin my rant I do want to stress that I am not a top of the line Grammar Nazi. I simply want people to spell correctly and use words like they were meant to be used. I have seen a sign on the front window at a place of business that used the word 'you're' wrong. Yes, the used the word 'your' instead. I have seen posters made for public display that used 'then' instead of 'than'. The poster read something like "Other then 5 years." I have seen people use the word 'dominate' instead of 'dominant'. I have seen the word 'definitely' become 'defiantly'. I have seen 'ridiculous' somehow magically adopt an e and disown the i to become 'rediculous'. And don't get me started on your, you're, there, their and they're. I have seen people misuse 'there' and 'their' in the same damn sentence!!!! How the hell does that happen???? Somebody make it stop. I keep hearing people say stupid stuff about how if people can't speak English they need to get the hell out of America. I think if you can't spell simple pronouns then you should go back to elementary school and get a refresher. How high does your IQ have to be to use the simple words in our English language correctly? The sad part is it is epidemic. I have watched people who I know are smart enough to spell and use these words correctly and now they don't even use the words properly anymore. What the hell happened? Did texting and social media ruin the written English language? It's driving me crazy. And yes, I'll be the first to admit that I may use commas in the wrong place and may even end a sentence with a preposition. I am not an advanced Grammar Nazi but other than typos you'll see me master the written English language. I bet English teachers despise teaching nowadays. Okay. Rant over. Am I alone in these passionate feelings about the high illiteracy rate that is epidemic and spreading through our country faster than Pepper Potts in an Ironman suit? Former newspaper copy editor here... that long paragraph at the beginning drove me NUTS. :lol2:

Honestly, I credit Sister Bernadette at Most Blessed Sacrament for both my passion for diagramming sentences and speaking and writing correctly, and my physical discomfiture when I see or hear misuse of our language.

A couple of years ago the paper ran a classified ad for a copy editor. I applied on a whim but didn't hear back. Heck, I'd edit the headlines for them for free.

I have to admit that I always have to pause and think about when to use affect and effect. Same with affective and effective. I usually get it right, but I do have to think it through first. Helps to have teens that ask you to proofread their reports!
April 24, 201313 yr The misuse of words and an occasional grammatical error don't bother me. Typos happen all the time and no big deal. But when someone has 2, 3, 4 + errors in one post, my impression of them plummets and it causes me to question any point they are trying to make. The thing that bothers me the most is poor or no sentence structure - no capital to start the sentence, run on sentences due to lack of punctuation, etc.
