February 15, 201313 yr I just heard that in addition to the cheer coaches, the dance coach and wrestling coaches were also fired today. This is from the inside and I cannot confirm. I've also heard that the cheer coach firing was done by the Principal independent of the KCBOE... did she overstep her bounds? Again, this is whatt I'm hearing from folks close to the situation. Anyway you slice it, something really goofy is going on at Dixie. Its a mess now and has potential to get worse. I believe the dance coach was fired for involvement in the Florida competition scenario with the cheeleading coaches.
February 15, 201313 yr As a parent of a recently graduated Dixie Cheerleader, I would be asking the Kenton County school board a lot of questions. From what I've been told, and heard from parents at other Kenton County schools, this is a relatively "new" rule. If the county is going to institute a rule like this, then why do you not have an "administrator" trained, and assigned to accompany these various groups on overnight trips? If you make the rule, then have the administrator available. I heard on the radio this morning that the SK wrestling coach was being fired also for taking the wrestling team to an overnight tournament in Ohio. Just going by what I heard. Students are encouraged to join various clubs, teams, etc., but then they are told "sorry, all of your hard work is for nothing, because we're not going to allow you to show off your accomplishments if you have to drive more than 50 miles from your school." If you are going to make the rule, put personnel in place to allow these teams to compete and represent their schools. From personnel experience, these Dixie cheerleaders work from tryouts in March, all through the summer heat, the fall and winter, to fund raise for Nationals. It doesn't cover airfare or gas if you drive, food, or anything else but their fees and hotel expenses. With four people to a room, it's usually $400-$500 per person. Administration knew full well that this trip is made each and every year, so why was someone not "available" to go? These girls are chaperoned at all times that they are not on the mat. Everything is done as a team. Meals, practices, travelling to the different venues to compete, all of the girls are together at all times. We're talking 10 MONTHS advance notice. No excuse for not finding someone to accompany them.
February 15, 201313 yr You could be right. However, I'm a black and white guy. If my boss tells me a rule I abide by it or I choose to go do something else. I don't know much about this situation but I will say it's hard to be a black and white guy in a grey world.

No idea what happened with "insubordination" on the coaches' part. Cannot comment on that. But, the girls should have been told from the very beginning that there wasn't going to be an administrator available to go BEFORE all of the fund raising was started, BEFORE they were allowed to compete in the National qualifier and not wait until everything is set. On a side note, uniforms are paid for with fund raising also, and do belong to the school.
February 15, 201313 yr I don't agree with the rule/regulation, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't follow it as a coach. There are LOTS of rules at my workplace that I don't like, but I still follow them.
February 15, 201313 yr WOW! When will there be good news about Dixie? Seems like they are in a rut with this bad and controversial stuff. Skycvg brings up some good points! Why allow the team to think for at least 10 months think they can go, then the policy is changed? Why are there not administrators assigned to teams? What if the team can't find an administrator to go? They say that the school said the team could go as long as they didn't compete as Dixiethen get there and told they couldn't be an independent. What would you do? What would you do, or expect as a parent? I am sure that cheerleaders work hard all year long, they seem to put a lot of hours in it, the parents wouldn't want to disappoint their girls that way. I am also sure that the coach knew that it may cause some trouble, but her love for the girls on the team got her to go ahead and do it anyway. Seems to me the coaches care more about the kids than the school and school system! Knowing about this for 10 months, I assume they always go as well? And nothing is said to them to cancel the trip? Why wasn't an administrator available to go? Sounds like a very convenient way to fire a coach if you don't like them. As stated, other coaches at other Kenton schools have been fired too.
February 15, 201313 yr The news report that I saw on Channel 19 yesterday said that the cheerleading team was unable to find a school administrator to accompany them on the trip, as is required for out-of-state or overnight trips for school organizations. They are able to go "independently" of the school (ei - had the students' parents all take them individually to Florida and competed as an independent team), which is what the coaches and the cheerleaders' parents claim they did. However, all of the paperwork and the results of the cheerleading competition list them as the "Dixie Heights High School Cheerleaders" - which is clearly not an independent group. Somebody within the school admin should be held accountable, too. That's just crap. That's all it is. Here you have a team from your school (and, district as a whole) who has qualified for a NATIONAL event to garner NATIONAL prestige, and they can't find/delegate an "administrator" from within the system to go.

February 15, 201313 yr STUDENTS 09.36 FIELD TRIPS CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Students who participate in approved co-curricular activities shall be counted as being in attendance during the instructional school day. Field trips, school-to-work-activities, and other student activities involving travel shall contribute to the achievement of District and school goals and academic expectations. In the planning of such activities, primary consideration shall be given to the educational value of the activity and the safety and welfare of the students involved. EARNED ATHLETIC AND ACADEMIC TRIPS Students who compete in approved athletic, academic, musical, and other competitive activities shall contribute to the achievement of the District. In the event that an individual student, an athletic team, an academic team, or other group representing a school or schools in the District becomes eligible, by successful completion of a qualifying event or test, to attend or compete in a subsequent event that requires travel, the Superintendent, or his designee, may grant approval for such travel upon request of the appropriate Principal. All matters relating to Scheduling, Drivers, Vehicles, Supervision, Meals, Insurance, and Parental Approval for such earned athletic and academic trips shall be governed by the District’s Field Trip policy. BOARD APPROVAL REQUIRED The Superintendent shall submit for Board approval a listing of excursions designated as local trips. The Board shall consider on an individual basis requests for overnight trips and trips taken to destinations more than fifty (50) miles from school except those destinations on the approved field trip list. PRIOR APPROVAL Prior approval of the Principal is required for each of the above trips. Approval shall be granted only when co-curricular activities and trips are instructional in nature, directly related to the instructional program, and scheduled to minimize absences from classroom instruction. SCHEDULING Trips that are longer than one (1) day shall be scheduled during vacation periods, if possible. DRIVERS/VEHICLES All District-owned vehicles shall be utilized and driven by an adult duly qualified and licensed to operate the vehicle. Drivers of school vehicles and operation of District-owned passenger vehicles transporting students shall be in compliance with requirements specified in applicable statutes and administrative regulations.1 SUPERVISION A certified or classified staff member must accompany students on all school-sponsored or school-endorsed trips. For overnight, out-of-state trips, a certified administrator shall accompany the group, which could include more than one (1) school at a single destination. For athletic trips, a nonfaculty coach or a nonfaculty assistant may accompany students as provided in statute. Persons designated to accompany students shall be at least twenty-one (21) years old.2 The staff member(s) in charge of the trip shall serve in loco parentis for the participating students and shall be responsible for monitoring the behavior of both students and chaperones. School personnel shall screen prospective adult chaperones (age 21 or older) and make the final decision as to who shall accompany the students. A reasonable number of chaperones shall be required. On all overnight trips there shall be a minimum of one (1) chaperone in each student room. Adults who voluntarily contribute their time to serve as chaperones on field trips shall be under the direct supervision of school personnel assigned to the activity. Chaperones are expected to act as reasonably prudent adults in providing for the safety of students. All participants shall be required to comply with District policies and procedures, including those pertaining to alcohol and drug use. MEALS The planning process for all field trips across all grade levels shall include a statement of where meals will be provided in the event that students are not able to eat lunch at school. Whenever possible, sponsors are to work with the Kenton County School District Food Services Department to provide carry-on meals to be consumed at a predetermined single site. Planning documents will identify the location and source of each meal. For meals, each bus shall transport students to one (1) dining location at which all students on that bus must remain. Students are to be dropped off and picked up as close to the dining entrance as possible and supervised closely as they enter and exit. When multiple buses are involved, each bus may be assigned to a different location, but students may not leave the site to which their bus has been assigned. INSURANCE Only Board insured vehicles or appropriately certificated common carriers shall be used for transporting students.3 Use of certificated common carrier service shall be authorized by the Board on a case by case basis, and the reasons to justify such use shall be cited in Board minutes.3 MEDICATION Administration of medication to students during field trips shall comply with applicable law, regulation and medication administration training developed by the Kentucky Department of Education. When students will be travelling outside the state, the Superintendent’s designee shall do the following: 1. Determine applicable legal requirements concerning delegation of student medication responsibilities in states through which students will be travelling; and 2. Assign staff to accompany students on the field trip to address student medication needs, when applicable. PARENTS' APPROVAL Parents are to be informed of the nature of the trip, the approximate departure and return times, means of transportation, and any other relevant information. Parents must give written approval for students to participate in school sponsored trips. February 15, 201313 yr I think the Principal handled the game last night the wrong way. So what the girls put on their national cheer t-shirts to show support to their coaches. I'm guessing they have been with these coaches for years, it was Senior night and they were very emotional. The Principal showed herself to be petty, unprofessional and arrogant to step in at the half and demand the girls take off the t-shirts or not cheer. She should have taken a deep breath and appreciated the emotional situation that was at hand and just let it go. As a parent of a Dixie student I am ashamed of her actions. I also wonder why this thread was created here instead of continued in the basketball forum where it began? Isn't cheerleading part of the basketball game? When the fight occurred between CCH and Montgomery County, the discussion of it went on for pages and pages...? Just wondering.
