That was me who said the Principle kind of made it gray, and I still believe she did in some fashion. If she would have given a "black and white" answer she would have told them they don't go period. After that there is no debate. By being given an open window, the cheer coach climbed through it...then the argument is if the window was open too wide or not. Thats when it becomes debateable.

 

You can't them they can't go because they can go as an independent ie a cheer academy/school/team that so many girls are a part of now. That's why it's black and white to me. The rules were clearly laid out.

I also believe the coach did right by the kids by letting them compete after being told they couldn't if done under a different name. Its a shame all they way around, no doubt about it. How can a principal say "no?" Could a principal tell Brandon Hatton to not go to an AAU game in the spring? A principal cannot forbid a student from doing something when they are not representing the school. That's my entire basis for saying the principal made it black and white.

Ok, so if the coaches were fired because the girls competed as a team representing Dixie Heights, then why won't the Principal accept the trophy they won into the school? Coaches are paying the price. Why punish the accomplishment of the girls??

The competition was the NHSCC. National High School Competition. Elite cheerleading teams do not compete at this one, they have their own. This is for middle and high school teams only. Even if the coaches knew it meant their jobs, they did the right thing by letting them compete. Those girls work too long and too hard and travelled too far for the coaches to say "no, you're not competing, sorry".

 

As far as other Kenton County schools attending, Dixie was the only one, however, Boone, Cooper, and Ryle all attended. Ryle, in the same division, placed 5th.

This Principal is not doing a good job endearing herself to the students, nor parents in her first year on the job. I'll bet she does not make it to the end of the year.

However, unless there is a dispute over what was actually said this case is pretty black and white. If it was said that you CANNOT go and compete as Dixie then it's very clear as in crystal clear IMO.

 

I grew up with a dad who was a Marine and a police officer. I learned at a very young age that I do not have to LIKE any rules but I do have to follow them.

Again, if this was truly said then it's on the cheer coach for not verifying ahead of time that being independent was an option. Maybe they did and didn't like the answer and took a chance. They lost.

 

I agree that in any line of work you don't have to like the rules you just have to follow them. Just seems like there may be some grey area in this situation. It was an approved trip it just wasn't sanctioned by a rule that was inacted after the trip was already approved. So if the trip was approved the grey area is who is responsible to make sure the new rules are followed. I'm not excusing the coaches they did some wrong they aren't 100% innocent. But the principal wasn't all in the right either and handled the entire situation poorly. A good adminstrator should of looked at all approved trips once the rule was in place and make sure all the trips followed the guidelines. Whether it be the principal or the AD its hard for a partime coach in my mind to know all the weird rules in our school system now. They do this work for little to no money. The people in charge are there to lead and make sure all rules are followed. But once the principal told the coaches they couldn't participate under Dixie's name whether they like it or not have to follow the rule or be prepared for consequences.

How can she say no? She did say no. Then said "yes" go as an independent if you want to. Sure she couldn't stop a group of hs girls from going to FL, but if her only and final words were "no, you can't go and compete" when asked, there is no weasel room. She let the weasel in the room with the second part of her statement (assuming of course thats how it went down).

 

Heres an interesting question. Did the principle give the ok for the team to travel to FL? Black or white. Yes or no? No qualifiers, and the answer she gives would depend on her keeping her job or not.

As of the policy in place, and what occurred, it seems pretty straight forward that the coaches broke policy, and as a result, deserved to be fired. However, there are some questions that linger about the whole situation. The article kinda sounds like the principal did nothing to support, or assist, the team.

 

1. Did the coach confirm with tournament that they could perform as an independent prior to leaving? And if they were told they could, but then when they got there, told they weren't, what should they have done? You have a group that has paid for a trip expecting to be cheering in a competition.

 

2. Why did the principal allow the team to go knowing they didn't have an administrator going? Even if they claimed they were going as an independent, did they have uniforms without the Dixie name on it? Kinda seems like the principal could've put a stop to a trip like this.

 

3. Why didn't the principal assist in finding an administrator to go with the team? Mrs. Banta would've found someone the first day she was told about it and would've promoted the trip from day one.

Many have asked why the principal did not say "no" from the start. That would have started a backlash of complaints from parents of every cheerleader. IMO what should have happened as a responsible leader. The principal, who was well aware of the teams intentions, should have checked into the ruling of whether or not the team could even had participated as an independent and then helped in finding an administrator if not. I know this is probably not directly in their job description, but this would have been a chance to earn much needed positive attention for DHHS and instead has become another debacle. The whole situation seems to have been handled wrongly and I feel like the principal definitely needs to share in pain.

She was unpopular before she was awarded the principal position. No one seems to know how she got the job. I've heard nothing but negative reports at her attempt at being a principal.
