February 15, 201313 yr Is this type of situation the BOE's way of saying "no overnight trips for anyone" and they use the lack of an administrator to excuse it? How can any board set up a rule like this without making the provisions for administrator to be available? Cheerleading competition dates are set up and announced a year or more ahead of time. Routines are choreographed during the summer, fund raisers started almost a year out, qualifiers are in the fall, and monies are due two to three months prior to the trip. Dixie is the only Kenton County school that attends Nationals in FL. There is no way that this was a surprise to anyone in administration. After all of the negative press lately, positive press is a necessity for the school. You cannot tell me that an administrator could not be found to accompany this group in the 10 months prior to this competition. I agree that telling them no from the start would've started a major backlash, but it would've given them more time to really research it with UCA and find a way to make it work, and being truthful up front would make it easier to swallow early, rather than destroying the girls hopes just before taking the mat. I'm really wondering if the principal knew all along that they wouldn't be able to compete as an independent (which I've never seen any team do in HS competitions) and decided to let them hang themselves by competing anyway. The NKYCCA's (NKY Cheerleading Coaches Assoc) competition is coming up. In order to compete, the teams competing must be member schools of the association. I doubt that they could enter as an independent, but it would be funny to see the Dixie team compete and not represent Dixie. I.E, not wear any uniform associated with Dixie, or anything with Dixie on it, but show up essentially "anonymous" and take the mat in protest.

February 16, 201313 yr I haven't seen this asked yet.........who is a qualified administrator? And for the love of God, why do they need an administrator to "baby sit" these students when they stray from the school grounds? Dixie Heights High School is the laughing stock of NKY with all the "fine publicity" they have been getting the last few years.........what a joke. And as far as the principal being the new coach (excuse me, just feel out of my chair laughing), that will go over "like a ton of lead balloons".
February 16, 201313 yr The coaches should have been fired for dragging all of those parents and children to Florida without confirming that they were indeed entered in the competition as an independent. Who does that? Who travels from NKY to Florida with a huge group of folks for a competition without confirming entry?

I know that was the reason. I would think she will get "hammered" with calls and e-mails.
February 16, 201313 yr Doesn't Kenton County Schools have a rule that principles can't be a coach? I could be wrong but I am remembering a football or basketball coach that took a job being a principle and was no longer allowed to coach.
February 16, 201313 yr My daughter is a member of the Dixie cheer team and hopefully I can answer many of the questions posed here. The new administrator (principal or asst. principal) rule was passed at the beginning of the school year. The cheerleaders had been practicing and raising money since May. We were told in September we would not be permitted to go without an administrator. One was found. Then the principal backed off and said we could not go because she needed that administrator in the building. There are 4 administrators at Dixie yet she cannot do without one for 1 1/2 days! The trip was Thursday evening through Monday morning. After a nonproductive meeting with parents she said we could go independent but not use "high school" and suggested "Dixie all stars" which shows how little she knows about cheer because then we would've had to attend an all star national not a high school national. Our coaches contacted UCA and were told we could compete independent although they didn't exactly know what that meant and we, the parents, purchased an independent insurance policy to cover the girls in case of injury. We went ahead with fundraising as planned and everything was signed off by the principal and all of which was titled UCA high school nationals. The parents at Dixie paid for the entire trip and also pay for everything related to cheer. The total out of pocket for 1 year on dixie cheer team is about $3500! The school pays nothing and does not own our uniforms. Upon arrival in FL all credentials and programs were listed as Dixie Heights High School, we did not enter this way nor was UCA going to go back and reprint everything for over 4000 cheerleaders. The coaches did what was asked and they have proof of entry, but the principal knew all along it was a high school national and that high school age teams would be attending and signed off on each girl's Educational Enhancement Form. Our cheer was changed to delete the words high school and we only used the words Dixie heights. We never referred to ourselves as being with the high school. This has been a witch hunt front the get go for our coaches and unfortunately now our Children will pay the price. Instead of embracing the good Kenton county has chosen to stick with the bad publicity.

They walked off the floor at senior night and out on their Finalists tshirts and sat with the student cheer section. So proud of them for sticking up for what they believe in.
