Got to agree with LIPTON here. Though I also like to try to be "black and white" as much as possible....it isn't always possible to do. Obviously there was a lot of gray area when they were told they COULD go as long as they competed as an independent, so the principle herself made it gray. My question is...whats the dang difference? If they compete as Dixie or the Betty Boop All Stars, everything about the trip itself remains the same regardless of what name they compete under. Sounds to me like the principle was saying she didn't really care what happend to the team while on the trip as long as the Dixie name wasn't involved. Yea, I'm reading a lot into it, but it can be viewed that way. Of course I'm a complete outsider and don't know any parties involved...I'm also sure I don't have the whole story and am sure theres a lot more to it as well. Will be interseting to see what else comes out.

The Principal showed herself to be petty, unprofessional and arrogant to step in at the half and demand the girls take off the t-shirts or not cheer. She should have taken a deep breath and appreciated the emotional situation that was at hand and just let it go.

This is clearly a cheerleading thread - about the circumstances surrounding the cheerleading coaches' firing after their trip to the nationals. Details about basketball are minor at best.

I heard that they were in fact told to only use the name "Dixie" and to not use the full "Dixie Heights" -- not sure I understand the minute difference. As I'm reading all of this and taking it in I can't help to wonder why this new rule wasn't grandfathered in... or brought to everyone's attention sooner, or brought to everyone's attention now and explained that it would take place next year. There does seem to be a real problem with implementing it immediately and having it have such a harsh effect on the plans that a team had in the works for almost a year.

I applaud the coaches for doing the right thing for the girls! Depending on all of the details she knew she may get the boot. I agree with ennam, the principal handled the whole situation wrong last night, let the t-shirt thing slide and no one hardly hears about it. Now it's all over including the TV news. Great good at putting even more negative attention to a school who has taken some bad publicity lately.

1. I agree that this would have over and done with had the principal just let them finish the game.

2. I started the thread separately in order to get discussion going. Many people who might be interested in commenting on cheerleading wouldn't think to look at a basketball threat titled "Boone vs Dixie." Trying to help my guy G get more discussion going.

I don't know much about this situation but I will say it's hard to be a black and white guy in a grey world.

However, unless there is a dispute over what was actually said this case is pretty black and white. If it was said that you CANNOT go and compete as Dixie then it's very clear as in crystal clear IMO.

 

I grew up with a dad who was a Marine and a police officer. I learned at a very young age that I do not have to LIKE any rules but I do have to follow them.

Again, if this was truly said then it's on the cheer coach for not verifying ahead of time that being independent was an option. Maybe they did and didn't like the answer and took a chance. Agreed! IF she has a team to compete. I am guessing the girls will either not show up at all or walk out. So the principal gets the coaching job, maybe she wanted it all the time. As you said, I can't see this ending well.

Maybe I read it wrong, but didn't it say, under athletic trips, that they can be accompanied by non faculty coach or assistant? Or was that just for day trips?

 

The treatment of the girls at senior night was not the way to handle it IMO. I applaud the entire team for supporting their senior classmates and sitting down for the second half. The principle may very well not have a team to escort to any more competitions.

 

Someone asked about costs for administrator to accompany the team. The smart thing would be to tell them that since one needs to go per county rule, then fundraising needs to pay for the trip and the county should not dock the administrator for days missed. If there are only so many of these qualified people to go on trips, then widen the qualifications.

It would be interesting to find out if any Kenton County school has been approved for an overnight trip. If so, how were accommodations paid for, etc....

In the post with the BOE's complete rules, it seems that the administrator can be there for multiple teams. Did Scott or SK participate in this competition?

That was me who said the Principle kind of made it gray, and I still believe she did in some fashion. If she would have given a "black and white" answer she would have told them they don't go period. After that there is no debate. By being given an open window, the cheer coach climbed through it...then the argument is if the window was open too wide or not. Thats when it becomes debateable.
