Dixie Fires Cheerleading Coaches

Featured Replies

While I agree with you here, I have to wonder if there aren't equally able folks in the wings who could be strong educators and also have the ability to lead the school in it's entirety. The education is ultimately the standard, but the other activities are vitally important and sometimes only need proper leadership. The only info most of us have is what's been laid out in this thread, but on the surface, it appears that the principal lacks some of the skills that many others don't. And I'm not intending to lay blame on the principal, because it seems there's more than one party responsible from what it seems.

I agree with you in that the best administrators can lead all aspects of the school well. In this instance, I asked about other examples of this principal's inept leadership. No one can provide any. So...even IF we accept what is said here as the principal's sole fault, this is one mistake and is not worthy of her being fired in my opinion. Again, that is IF she is to blame in the entirety which does not seem clear to me.

I'm still stuck on the $3500 thing.

What happens when a young lady from a family eligible for free or reduced lunch makes the squad? No way they can afford these fees. Do you bring your parents W-2's to the tryout?

To be totally honest, I have no idea what happens in this instance. That is something the family in question would've taken up with the coaching staff in private and it would've been up to them as how they wanted to deal with it. At the All Star or Elite level, the number of fundraisers are endless. I know of a family that paid all of the expenses for TWO girls by working at the Reds and Bengals games, along with doing some of the other fundraising opportunities. It only took their time.

In high school, that is different, at least it was at Dixie a couple of years ago. They went from putting fundraiser monies into individual "accounts" to everyone's going together and splitting it. Money from, say, a car wash. Say they raised $1000 and only 10 girls participated. Each girls would get a $100 "credit" to put towards clothing, fees or whatever. That money accumulates and you have paid for your year. It changed to everyone sharing in the proceeds. We had girls that did every single fundraiser and we had some that did not do a single one. But because it went into a common "fund", the non workers got credit for doing nothing whatsoever. That same $1000 is now split up between, say, 40 girls. The $100 credit for the actual workers went from $100 to $25. Instead of working one fundraiser, now you have to work three more to "earn" the same money.

I'm still stuck on the $3500 thing.

Club volleyball and club soccer are for those who can afford it to a great extent, check out the rosters from NKYVC and their ilk and you will see a lot from the parochial ranks. Very little minority representation. Yes, these are open tryouts, but a lot lack the means to make the financial commitment to joining the team.

We have the "common fund" for all fundraisers in my county too. It is complete garbage. The ones who do the work should reap the benefit.

Did you not read what I wrote before? If the last Principal was pushed out for 1 letter that he wrote and published, then this one has done far worse.

Dixie's education product is fine. I know a lot of smart and talented kids that have matriculated its halls.

Not to get into an argument with anyone about this, but Dixie is ok, I would say the best of the three Kenton County schools. The smart and talented kids will rise to the top no matter what school they attend. But, in my particular experience, having had one graduate recently from Dixie, and having one currently at "another" school, the "other" school definitely wins out over Dixie. Too many particulars to get into on here, but it was our choice not to grace those hallways with another child. It was not a sports based decision as some would think, but putting another child through there was not going to happen, and I'll leave it at that. Dixie does everything that they are supposed to education wise, but the scores are just not there as compared to the BW's, the Cov Cath's, and the Highlands'. Plain and simple.

If I remember correctly, it was told to us as some kind of new regulation for tax purposes, maybe? I can't remember. The wife and daughter did every single fundraiser. Bake sales, car washes, yard sales in horrible weather, basketball concessions, selling everything, you name it. After the fund paid for the coaches expenses, we had exactly $50 in "credit". We thought we had the FL fees for our daughter completely paid for. Not even close.

Yes. I read what you wrote. I asked you what this principal has done besides your disagreement with this particular incident. You have provided me with nothing else. What the board of education might do in this incident is irrelevent to my argument. In my opinion, if this is the only strike against this principal (which again, how much blame she should shoulder is still questionable in my eyes), this would be a poor reason to fire her.

All this talk about Dixie's academics vs other schools like CCH, NDA, etc is laughable. Those school are no better academically. Yes, their average test scores may be better, because students going to those schools have to pass a minimum standards entrance test. Public schools like Dixie have to take all the kids who are eligible to attend. We have kids who struggle with all kinds of issues, including poverty. I sent my kid to Villa for one year... was not impressed with the difference between public vs Villa. I have a Masters degree, my wife has a Masters degree and we are more than capable of understanding and evaluating academics and those private schools are not impressive academically. Keep wasting your hard earned money folks. Oh, and by the way, when push comes to shove and the "best-of-the-best" academically are put on a team and "trotted out to the court" to compete... read 'em and weep:

You say you and your wife are smart enough to figure it out and then you base your position on Gov Cup? Come on.

That is not what I'm basing it on, just giving an example. High school sports teams consist of the best players and that is how the schools are judged. Not by the average talent of the entire school. Clyde, I'd be very happy to sit down with you face to face and debate "smarts." :)

I agree with you that public schools have issues that those that can be a bit pickier about their admission do no.

I don't think academic team results tell the overall story of education in a school.

But sports teams, like basketball, football or baseball do??? Want your cake?

Private school's teachers get paid less than public school teachers. Wanna bet where the better teachers teach?
