The girls buy the uniforms, but my understanding is that the school owns them. I thought this is what skycvg mentioned in one of his posts.

Also, they competed as Dixie Heights as they were not allowed to compete as an independent. Therefore, principal does have say.

Despite me posting something that supported his overall contention I got several PMs from a poster who accused me of talking the talk and not walking the walk when it comes to supporting "my" school. Now granted, despite most people on here knowing exactly which schools I consider "my schools" he had no clue. He kept telling me what I said on this thread and I gave him several chances to find the err of his ways. He kept insisting on telling me what I posted. He even went so far as to copy and paste it for me into the PM. Still didn't have a clue as to why he was wrong. I pointed out that he was wrong and it should be easy to determine how.

Those who have mentioned lawsuits on here I have to ask. Other than the coaches who are at will employees, who has been damaged enough that they would seek legal recourse?

I asked a question earlier in this thread and I do not think it has been answered. Does Kenton County Schools have a rule that administrators can not be a Coach?

I have a football player, a basketball player, a diver, and a dance team member. For four sports for my 2 kids I maybe spent $1500. That is for spirit packs, fees, and fundraising. How in the world in a public school can a kid be expected to pay $3500 to be part of the group.

 

Yes, Dixie pays absolutely nothing for the cheerleaders. We, the parents, cheerleaders and former coaches, pay for EVERYTHING! This year alone we paid for 2 uniforms, practice clothes, shoes, hair bows, socks, warmup suit, choreography, music, gym rental fees at a cheer gym for usage of their mats and tumbling coaches ($40/mo. for 11 months) and for 1 girl to attend UCA Nationals was $485 for 4 nights plus airfare $300 (this is based on 4 people in a room). Add in the cost of a parent attending (another $485 plus $300 airfare). My total out of pocket this year was $3475 and this doesn't include any extras that the coaches may pay for out of their pockets, such as a t-shirt or sweatshirt here and there. I did not include in my costs the spending money for Disney World because everyone spends different amounts. I spent about $300, most of which was on food. The school does not recognize the cheerleaders. They won the 9th Region Cheer Championship, there was no mention of it on the announcements, on the school sign or in the school newsletter.

I would think that the school should provide a uniform and a place to practice at a minimum.

To be totally honest, I have no idea what happens in this instance. That is something the family in question would've taken up with the coaching staff in private and it would've been up to them as how they wanted to deal with it. At the All Star or Elite level, the number of fundraisers are endless. I know of a family that paid all of the expenses for TWO girls by working at the Reds and Bengals games, along with doing some of the other fundraising opportunities. It only took their time.

 

In high school, that is different, at least it was at Dixie a couple of years ago. They went from putting fundraiser monies into individual "accounts" to everyone's going together and splitting it. Money from, say, a car wash. Say they raised $1000 and only 10 girls participated. Each girls would get a $100 "credit" to put towards clothing, fees or whatever. That money accumulates and you have paid for your year. It changed to everyone sharing in the proceeds. We had girls that did every single fundraiser and we had some that did not do a single one. But because it went into a common "fund", the non workers got credit for doing nothing whatsoever. That same $1000 is now split up between, say, 40 girls. The $100 credit for the actual workers went from $100 to $25. Instead of working one fundraiser, now you have to work three more to "earn" the same money.

 

The change to a "group fund" vs an "individual credit for working" approach was made necessary by an IRS ruling forbidding the awarding of individual credit if the booster club had a tax exempt 501 c3 designation...........several booster clubs paid substantial fines!!

For my daughter's years of cheering at TFMS and Dixie, fundraising was done by the girls to buy uniforms and the school KEPT all uniforms for subsequent teams to use. All uniforms had to be turned into the school. Senior year, the midriff uniforms were used for football until the new ones came in. My daughter had to sell sponsorships equal to $125 to pay for new uniforms. We had to turn in those and all uniforms as soon as the season was over. All new uniforms whether we paid for them, or the school, became property of the school. That may have changed since 2011. Uniforms have ALWAYS belonged to the school.

Does the school rent warehouse space for all the boxed-up, used uniforms in all its sports? Because it seems to me the trend anymore is that sports teams get new uniforms every year, and some teams (baseball and softball being examples) do multiple uniform sets each year.

 

Seems like a pretty dumb rule. If you pay for it, you should get to keep it.
