WOW WOW WOW....... no one gave SL a chance and they almost pulled the upset of the season. After a win over Lafayette and the game tonight it looks like SL is back on track! Way to go Cards!

How is losing my 8 almost the upset of the season?

Don;t take any thing away from S. Laurel they have the best team in the state and imo if they played NCH 10 times they could win 5 of them. They play more as a team which makes them Special.

A little info thats interesting. S. Laurel has played 2 teams in top 25 and have no remaining games all the way to Rupp. Henry Clay has played 10 teams in top 25 with a possible 9 to get to Rupp. IMO thats a big difference .

You sure about that.....

SL has played:

1.) Brentwood TN (10) & North College Hill (2)..... two top ranked teams in the nation.... better then any teams Henry Clay will face all season. These rankings came from the USA Today and are up to date.

2.) Pendleton (4), Lafayette (15), Madison Central (25)...... three top 25 teams in the state of KY. These rankings come from the Herald Leader and are up to date.

3.) Mason County...... whom some consider to be a possible top 25 team, and who SL must face again.

4.) R. J. Reynolds, NC....Glenn, NC...... Archbishop Malloy, NY. Each top teams in their state with Archbishop Malloy, NY being very good.

You are totally right though...... Henry Clay has a much tougher road to Rupp with SL playing in a very weak region and Henry Clay playing is one of the hardest regions. However, I dont think you can call SL's schedule soft. Nor do I think you can discredit what Allen has accomplished by saying he's done so against soft competition. He was the Sweet 16 tourney MVP..... and thats not soft competition.

I also dont think you can discredit Allen by saying that his accomplishments are just a result of playing on a great team. If that was ONLY the case then the same could be said of Dunaway. All individual awards in team sports are a reflection of that individuals team in some way or another...... however that doesnt take away from the individual accomplishment.

The game was in question up to just a few mintues left. SL was leading at 1/2. If SL had of beat the #2 team in the nation...... YES it would have indeed been the upset of the season, especially considering NCH was supposed to name the score.

I'm not taking anything away from Allen, just making a point about each teams opponents. Sorry I missed M. Central who has come on to make 11th even tougher. However you can't say 1 kid deserve Mr. Basketball because his team wins the weak 13th and another can't win because his team gets beat in the tough 11th. That should have no bearing on this award. Mason Co. is not rated and just got hammered by Lex. Cath.

Maybe you are right...... however I dont think that discredits what SL did at all. Every team has good and bad nights...... thats the nature of the game.

If you take your attitude..... then anytime a top ranked team gets upset by an unranked team its purely and simply a result of the top ranked team taking the other one lightly..... but that isnt always the case, NOR does it really matter if that is the case.

SL was given no chance whatsoever...... NCH was supposed to name the score...... and SL gave them all they wanted..... thats the facts and you cant take that away from them.

No because no other team would be popped up like they were, this was a flop. And this is JMO but at every halftime in both previous games the announced highschool stars OJ Mayo and Bill walker blah blah, to get the crowd even more hype, neither one show me what there really about OJ could have put up 30+ and Walker could have put up more... I'm just saying NCH could have dominated and didn't, not taking anything from SL come on... no one on SL could guard Mayo or Walker.

According to the word on the street Mayo will not be coming to KY...Mayo, Walker and coach Huggins will come as a package deal to some lucky school. Would you trade Tubby for the three?

Word on this street is the package will be delivered to Huntington, WV.

Is is my imagination or does the BGP cover shot show Huggins and Tubby watching this game from the sidelines?

Brentwood is a legitimately great team and has proven it by excelling against a tough schedule. Frankly, North College Hill's #2 ranking is a crock, the product of the presence of two extremely-hyped players.

2.) Pendleton (4), Lafayette (15), Madison Central (25)...... three top 25 teams in the state of KY. These rankings come from the Herald Leader and are up to date.

3.) Mason County...... whom some consider to be a possible top 25 team, and who SL must face again.

Madison Central is barely a top-25 team, is one at all. Other than the win over South Laurel, the Indians have done little to establish themselves as such. At best, they are the #5 or #6 team in their region.

Mason County ... lost to Southwestern, then was bombed by Lexington Catholic at home. The Royals are not a top-25 team.

4.) R. J. Reynolds, NC....Glenn, NC...... Archbishop Malloy, NY. Each top teams in their state with Archbishop Malloy, NY being very good.
Hardly.

According to Maxpreps.com, Glenn is 11-5 and is ranked 25th in North Carolina in their rankings. Reynolds is 6-10.

Molloy isn't ranked in the top 25 of the New York sportswriters' poll and NYHoops.com, a site that covers basketball in NYC, doesn't have Molloy ranked among the top 17 teams in the city. According to MaxPreps.com, Molloy is 6-5.

Moral of the story ... just because a team goes out-of-state to play in a tournament doesn't mean that the tournament is stocked with great teams.

However, I dont think you can call SL's schedule soft. Nor do I think you can discredit what Allen has accomplished by saying he's done so against soft competition. He was the Sweet 16 tourney MVP..... and thats not soft competition.
No one is calling South Laurel's schedule "soft," but it isn't nearly as tough as you make it out to be. The Cardinals' schedule is, at best, no tougher than that of many of the state's top teams.

As for Allen ... I saw the Sweet 16 last year. In my estimation, Allen was South Laurel's third-best player, behind Fields and Profitt. He is a very good player, but I haven't seen anything that makes me think he should be Mr. Basketball.

Haters,Haters,Haters.....A "hip-hop box" if noone on souths team could guard Mayo or Walker what happened? If Im not mistaken I was right on the floor and could have sworn I seen Hammonds block one of Mayos 3s and saw Walt Allen being more physical than Walker all night.Mayo and Walker didnt score 30 because they actually played a team that knows how to play "D" and that they was forced to play something that was supposed to be "D".It just comes to show if you cant play"D" It dont matter how many great players you got you will be vunerable.(Just ask Tubby)As far as Henry Clay being a descent team is a joke. The only reason Dunaway has a name is because he can shoot"half-way descent"and the rest of the team cant throw it in the ocean from a helicopter.Thats not based on the 21st game its based on every game I seen them in this year.If you play any kind of defense on HC they just crumble.I dont remember who it was that said South was 15 points better than HC but I dont know if you watched it or not but South beat Henry Clay by 42 in the AAU tournament.Yes both teams had all there players available. The fact of the matter is that there is not any stand out teams in Lexington again.Scott county is really good and Lexington Cath. is descent but I dont see any state champs in Fayette county.I should have sold Hatorade on this thread I would be rich!!!

I'm not saying that Allen deserves to be Mr. Basketball because his team is going to win the 13th...... if that is what you think I am arguing then you are totally misunderstanding my argument. I'm saying Allen deserves to be Mr. Basketball because he was state tourney MVP last season (therefore it means he performed at the highest level against the best competition), he has continued to be successful against the best in this state, as well as other states throughout this season, and because he is an upstanding PERSON, not just a great player.

Allen may not be a better athlete then Dunaway..... and Dunaway may have better stats...... and Dunaway no doubt has more potential at the college level. But I dont think any award is ever given on stats alone, nor do I think Mr. Basketball should be given to the best athlete. The award is a highschool award and should only reflect how one has performed in highschool, not how one MAY or MAY NOT perform in college. When you compare Dunaway's career and Allen's career its a tough choice, but I dont see how Allen doesnt come away with the award.

You are probably right...... BUT Mayo didnt put up 30+ and Walker didnt put up more then Mayo, NCH didnt dominate, and Mayo and Walker both got guarded pretty solidly.

Everything you are saying is hypothetical....... but IT DIDNT HAPPEN..... and IMO I dont care what you could of, should of, or would of done, I want to know what you did do. Use lack of focus or whatever excuse you want..... but the fact remains that SL played NCH's butt's off and that is the facts! :thumb: That's the great things about sports.... you get to prove it on the court..... and regardless of what excuses one makes for NCH, SL proved it on the court.

Madison Central is still top 25, regardless of whether you think they should be or not.

All I said was that SOME consider Mason Co a top 25 team and its very possible they could win their region which isnt a cake.

I never meant to make it sound like the out of state tourney that SL won was stacked...... only meant to show that the teams they played were quality competition and could play with just about anyone in the state of KY.

I am not trying to make SL's schedule sound like "the toughest" in the state. I am simply trying to show that what Allen has done, he has done against some tough teams..... just as tough as what Dunaway plays against. Dont even mention the fact that last season Allen played against as tough a competition you will see in this state, on as big a stage as there is in this state. I totally agree that SL's schedule isnt the toughest in the state, but it is not weak and could be considered ONE of the toughest, right on par with the rest of the top teams in the state.

As far as your last comment that's bolded...... he just won the state tourney mvp. That's nothing impressive is it. I totally agree that Allen doesnt stand out as much as Fields or Proffitt.... but this is due to his lack of size and raw athleticism, not due to his lack of basketball ability. If Mr. Basketball goes to the best "raw" athlete with great stats and great D1 potential..... Dunaway wins it...... if it goes to the best "raw" basketball player who knows how to play the game then I dont see how Allen doesnt win it.

I have to say, from warm ups to the game, I was not very impressed with any of the guys from NCH. I don't know what exactly Ellis was doing in warmups, but it was sorry. From there on through the game it just didnt look like they cared and all they wanted to do was complain to the refs about everything. Walker never moved unless he thought he had a chance at a dunk or a blocked shot. Mayo never got into the lane when as a 7th grader at Rose Hill I saw him get into the lane at will against Lex. Cath. South played a good zone, but it looked like he never even tried, he just wanted to settle for the jumper.

As for Dunaway, I was definitely expecting a lot more. He didnt show me very much at all. Mack looked like the best player on the court during that game.
