Time for a select class?

Featured Replies

Is it time for the KHSAA to consider taking teams like Trinity, Highlands, Bowling Green, St X, Covington Catholic and a handful of others, and form a select class regardless of school enrollment? This may be the only way to get decent playoff competition and championship games. Schools would have to petition to get in the select class and would have to be approved by a committee made up of coaches from the class. The bottom several teams could be dropped and replaced every year if new programs begin to emerge as powers and petition to get in. I know it won't happen, but it would be interesting. Thoughts?

As a fan, I absolutely love the idea. You're right, it will never happen for several reasons. But it would be nice!

This is a question that has been posed on many an occasion, but who in the world would petition to willingly have to go through Trinity and St.X for a title?

Exactly PR, why in the world would a small 4A school agree to play in a select class? Minimize the classes and maybe we won't have multiple beatdowns in the championship round.

3 classes instead of 6.

Mayfield-NewCath (probably)

Central-Highlands

Bowling Green-Trinity (maybe)

But that will never happen either.

I agree! That would be a best case scenario for the state. :thumb:

I have a idea, why don't we make every state champ not allowed to play for a championship until every team in their division wins a championship! That way Highlands couldn't win one for 31 yrs.

It's fine the way it is. As Julian Tackett explained it's not as easy as people think.

PP, what did Tackett say? I did not hear him. I am curious.

Didn't they do that with Jefferson 4a and HHS still came out on top but that was when teams were teams

There was a time when 4A was only Jefferson County and everyone else played in 1-3A

Stupid stupid stupid iedea.

Seriously, who would the arrogant people be to vote other teams out and into the "Elite Class?"

What if a team has a great season, say Harlan Co. and wins their games in one year by an average of 50 points and goes undefeated that entire year including the championship and is considered one of the best in the entire state, and that is they get voted into the silly class and then goes winless the next year because they lost all their great players to graduation?

Just one of the many examples. The only way you can pull this off is if you call it the "Pompous Class"

Not trying to be a smart alec, but seriously, this may be one of the most arrogant ideas ever.

How about if you do something more realistic and have these so called pereniel great teams simply play eachother during the reg season in their non district games? That way everyone is happy and you can figure out that way which of your selected 4 great teams are best.

The problem is if you did this there would only be 3 teams in it.

Not to sound like an old fuddy-duddy BUT until the early 70's there were only 3 classifications. 3A was Jefferson County and the rest of the state filled the other 2 classifications. AS I understand it the powers that be in the state were upset that a Jeff. County school won a championship every year. Whether that was the biggest driving force or not we went to 4 classifications. Schools were allowed to "play-up' so every public school and all of the Catholic schools in Jefferson County were 4A. A Jefferson County Champion was determined in a series of playoff games at the old Fairgrounds (which were great I might add, I miss them) and that Jeff. County champion played State-at-large champion for the overall state championship. That set-up caused a stir because some form out in the state felt it wasn't "fair" that a Jefferson County school made the championship game every year so they changed it so that when there were 2 schools left from Jefferson County 1 would host an "out in the state" team and one would travel for the semi-finals. I distinctly remember a head coach (from Nelson County I believe) being interviewed by a TV reporter and being asked about the new set-up and the possibility that 2 Jefferson County schools could meet in the championship game and he replied to the effect that we in the state will just have to do what we can so that doesn't happen. The bottom line to my rambling post is that for as long as I can remember there have been complaints about how the state champions are determined. There's always someone who thinks it's not fair to their team.

How about doing something like this, and then you don't have to worry about an arrogant class.

I get so tired of hearing how only a few teams are truly great and the rest are embarrasments. If people are so worried about blowouts and the same teams winning every year, then how about evening the playing field?

Look at the schools that are always winning and think about how some of them do that each year?

Instead of the arrogance, how about leveling the playing field. How about passing a State rule saying teams can only be made up of kids that actually live inside thier school districts? How about making another rule that says if a kid switches schools (due to moving etc.) must sit out an entire year?

How about private schools simply playing other private schools and having their own class?

Then I'd be interested in seeing who is always the dominate programs amongst the public schools.

Now before people get up in arms saying blah blah we don't recruit blah blah blah, simply make it a level playing field across the state and quit looking down your noses at the other schools for doing the right thing year in and year out.

That is my 2 cents.....If you want to talk about the Elite Class, then take your lumps along the way instead of looking down at all the other programs state wide.
