November 7, 201213 yr I'd love to Jim, but the SBA does that very thing, where has it gotten them. Heck I'd protest, do a sit in, parade nude if I thought it would help. At this point, it doesn't matter. I'm serious when I say I'm seriously considering shutting the doors. A threat like that will get action, I guarantee it.
November 7, 201213 yr MC, the world is changing. Under President Clinton; it was considered a major accomplishment (well, I guess that depends on where you stand on the issue) to enact "Don't ask, don't tell". You know - if you're homosexual, you can serve as long as you lie about your lifestyle. Last night two states (Maryland and Maine) passed same-sex marriage and the country's first openly gay Senator was elected (Wisconsin). Not the problem. America is changing and I fear for my kids children. I didn't vote for me, I voted for them.
November 7, 201213 yr Not the problem. America is changing and I fear for my kids children. I didn't vote for me, I voted for them. This is splattered all over my Facebook wall today (or "pray for our country the next four years". What, specifically, do you fear? How would Romney being elected eliminate that fear?
November 7, 201213 yr This is splattered all over my Facebook wall today (or "pray for our country the next four years". What, specifically, do you fear? How would Romney being elected eliminate that fear? Deficit. I'm not saying Romney would fix it, but that is one of my main concerns. We cannot keep the current course that the President has had us on.
November 7, 201213 yr Sounds like Ditch Mitch and the Republicans still don't get it. 2016 Hilary or Biden 2020 Hilary or Biden 2024 Andrew Cuomo 2028 Andrew Cuomo 2032 Chelsea Clinton 2036 Chelsea Clinton 2040 Malia Obama 2044 Malia Obama DYNASTY IN BLUE!
November 7, 201213 yr There is always Reagan the Republicans seem to think he's still alive. Where is old Bush, W Bush, Cheney etc? How about a Rush Limbaugh - Anne Coulter ticket. lol
November 7, 201213 yr So, how do you suppose small business owners make a dent? If we have an organization, to which I belong, and that collective lobby sucks, what then? Am I supposed to think I can make a difference in policy alone? All I have to go on is history. And in my 17 years of doing this, this current administration, and what's looming via Obamacare is likely able to sink my ship. So, what did you suppose I'd do? How is supporting a party that would have likely repealed that garbage a dumb move? I don't support the tax loopholes for corporate giants any more than you do. But there are ways of tax reform that could do that without harming the little guy. Could this administration have done that? Absolutely, but instead that healthcare package is loaded with issues small business owners will struggle mightily to overcome. I don't have a big solution — I wish I did. But the facts are the corporate giants are making their wishes heard in the form of campaign donations. Grass roots is where it's at. Turn out incumbents. Make people such as Mitch McConnell answerable to you and me instead of Yum Brands and UPS.

Turn out incumbents. Make people such as Mitch McConnell answerable to you and me instead of Yum Brands and UPS. I'll make you a deal, you make a plan and I'm on your bandwagon with both feet. I really don't care what it takes, but change has to happen for businesses the size of ours to make it in today's economy.
November 8, 201213 yr This is splattered all over my Facebook wall today (or "pray for our country the next four years". What, specifically, do you fear? How would Romney being elected eliminate that fear? Romney would support keeping taxes lower, reduce regulation, support more oil, coal and gas use, opposes abortion on demand, opposes same sex marriage and sees government as of, for and by the people. He would not have been perfect, but not the statist, as is Obama. Plus Romney would at least try to go to the aid of Americans in need of help when under attack.

I really don't care what it takes, but change has to happen for businesses the size of ours to make it in today's economy. As I said, turn out incumbents until those who are elected start to "get it" and answer to us instead of high-dollar campaign donors. You guys support the Mitch McConnell agenda. Why are you so shocked at what that has gotten you?

If you mean I like his stance on big business, that's just not true. Bottom line, you have 2 choices, and fiscally, a democratic administration doesn't help me one iota. At least I can say I have a better chance to prosper without one in office. It's really that simple. I like the pipedream of an independent in office, it won't happen in my lifetime. YOu and I both know it. So, as it stands, and I know it's cliche' but it's the lesser of the evils.

So, as it stands, and I know it's cliche' but it's the lesser of the evils. Stop thinking about it in presidential terms. My argument is targeted at Congress. A Congress featuring a mixed bag of people elected in a grass roots manner, not tied to the traditional party machinery and not beholden to the corporate campaign cash will force its will on any president.
November 8, 201213 yr Agree, then for starters we need shorter term limits. Like one would be good. That might dislodge the good old boy network. As for the presidential election, it's the topic of the day and my only explanation for why I voted the way I do. And as bad as you feel about McConnell, it's not his healthcare pkg that will doom small businesses come Jan. 1.
November 8, 201213 yr Romney would support keeping taxes lower, reduce regulation, support more oil, coal and gas use, opposes abortion on demand, opposes same sex marriage and sees government as of, for and by the people. He would not have been perfect, but not the statist, as is Obama. Plus Romney would at least try to go to the aid of Americans in need of help when under attack. I can understand and appreciate your opposition on abortion. I don't know what a president Romney would have done to help in that area. What I do know is that with abortion being legal or not, simply "opposing" it is easy. Doing something to help women make better decisions is harder. Why do you "fear" same-sex marriage? As to the energy, do you not "fear" the pollution that oil, coal and to a lesser degree, natural gas, produces? As to the "Americans under fire" part, I don't think that any of us know enough about it to make a judgment call there. We don't know if a president Romney (or Bush or Clinton) would have done anything differently or been more successful. Perhaps, but Monday morning quarterbacking is very easy. What we do know is that there are dead Somalia pirates and a dead Osama bin Laden that President Obama did have a hand in, so your hyperbole rings somewhat hollow.
November 8, 201213 yr The country is not center-right. It is center-left. I, and many other Republicans, have been operating under this delusion. This country has people that reject authority and do not want to be told what to do by anyone. The old institutions are crumbling; many states are passing laws permitting gay marriage by comfortable majorities. States are doing outright legalization of marijuana. The evangelical church has essentially given way to Joel Osteen Ministries message that we can "have it all." Abortion is no longer taboo, it is merely an unfortunate side effect of promiscuity that can be dealt with medically and under the guise of the right to choose. People expect a social safety net if things go bad. Businesses expect a social safety net if things go bad. Failure is not considered a healthy option. Importantly, in my mind, marriage is no longer something that is necessary for women. While married women supported Romney 55%-45%, single women supported Obama by a whoppping 68%-32%. There are less women getting married, as trends go. You do that math. In addition, the country is no longer white. That is a foregone conclusion, and trending downward. Non-whites give birth to children at rates almost twice as high as whites. Again, this is the trend, you do that math. These statements of fact are made matter-of-factly by me, they are no longer and indictment. It is what it is. This election in my opinion marked the death knell for conservative white males. We are dinosaurs. 10 women won contested Senate-House seats for the Democrats last night. If the Republican Party wishes to survive, it must, right now, re-make itself the way the Democratic Party started to in 1992. Perhaps we should hire James Carville. I personally believe it is too late. Hearsay, There are days when I want to scream and say make it all stop, but a couple of generations ago, it would have been immigrants from southern Europe, including some of my ancestors that would have been the subject of the discussion. The country is changing. It always has and we are richer for it. There are things that I miss from the 50s when I was a kid. There are a lot more things that are well gone. I have very high hopes for the future. There are problems. We will fix some of them. Some of them will go away on their own. Some of will seem less important after time. Some of them we will learn to live with. It's all good.
