On abortion, about the only thing political he could do is appoint pro-life justices and stand for life. Whereas Obama supports partial birth abortion and the killing of a baby if it somehow survived an abortion.

The Illinois initiative that Rep Obama voted against included additional language that would have allowed abortion to be outlawed in Illinois. He voted against the overall bill because he is pro-choice.

 

He said he would fully support a federal bill that left out the part that would undermine Roe v Wade.

 

Hate him because he's pro-choice but at least do it with actual facts and not lies put out by Huckabee et al.

 

By the way, it took me about 5 minutes to find the truth online. There was no conceivable way in my mind that a human being would vote to not allow a partially-born child to be saved. NONE. Therefore, I figured there had to be more to the story and there was.

We are going off track here. God intended for sexual relations between a man and woman as a good thing that could lead to new life. Yet we all know that due to biological reasons and modern medical practices that woman may not become pregnant. Again the Bible is clear that homosexual relations are forbidden.

This is a curious debate to me, and may be worth its own thread. But, what does it mean to be conservative or liberal in the broader sense (I don't mean the specific policies endorsed by the respective parties)? Obviously, this country has changed quite a bit over its history and will continue to change, so what defines conservatism or liberalism? The speed of change? Or are their specific policies, goals each wish to see fulfilled?

 

To me it's the roll of government. I believe in at least some form of collectivism and not some of the Social Darwinistic policies of conservatives. Provide for the general welfare to me means healthcare, social safety nets, Social security, medicare, proper regulation, equal opportunity and rights.

I feel like that's a cop-out.

 

I'm against abortion in all cases except for cases where the woman's life is endangered. However, there's things other than straight out-lawing abortions that can be done in order to decrease the amount. Contraception has to become more readily available. I understand I'm being a cafeteria Catholic in saying that, but if more women could get their hands on contraception, abortion rates would drop drastically... and isn't that what we want?

 

Also, teaching abstinence as the only safe-sex in schools is just out of touch and damaging.

 

The religious right needs to pick their battles. We need to have some solutions other than overturning Roe v. Wade, even if it "promotes promiscuity."

Which should lead to questioning, not conclusions.

This is why I asked BB why he's against abortion. My guess is he will say because it's immoral and it takes the life of an innocent child.
