Something I read today could show how it is going. With Barnhart hires, it is either public or completely silent. When he hired BCG, his name was thrown out and it was known that he would get the job once Donovan declined. When he hired Cal, it was nothing but speculation about who they would hire but the common theme back then was Cal had too much baggage for Mitch to hire him and yet he did. With this coaching search, there are a lot of names out there but nothing firm as far as a list or who Barnhart is talking to. Does this go back to the way it was when he hired Cal only switch it with Petrino that has too much baggage? Or is it simply Barnhart is still figure out what he wants to do himself. Everything I am seeing is that Barnhart wants to make as big of a splash as he did with hiring Cal for basketball. Only question is, can he do it? He knows football money affects all the other sports and he has to turn the football program around or all the other programs (except basketball) might suffer.

Your right it is different, it was more risky for the program to hire coach Cal. Coach Cal had two teams who had final four's taken away, and even though he was not found guilty in those cases. You know the public perception is that he did cheat. So people people he came here assumed his character was shaky, and has shown that his programs have gotten in trouble. Which is the last thing UK basketball would want to have happen again after the late 80's. So Coach Cal was a coach at a time with questionable character and possibly a risk of getting the program in trouble. Not to mention his loyalty saw him leave Umass to the pro's, then Memphis, and then UK and who knows possibly leaving UK to the pro's one day. Basically taking jobs that he believed was best for him. The same way Petrino has, even though Petrino should have at least waited until his first and only season in the NFL was over before he left. Coach Cal has just done such a great job here, that we seem to forget what the perception of what him was before he came here, same with Petrino now.

 

If Petrino can get this program to win, then I am all for it. Especially since he will be basically on his last life as a college coach now.

If UK hires Petrino, I am not interested in following the football team and I lose respect for the school.

You are right, I am not much of a fan of UK football. What interest I do have goes out the door if you hire someone with this lack of character. You guys do realize who this guy is:

 

- He interviewed for the job at Auburn while they still had a coach, who was a friend and had hired Petrino at Auburn, and after he had only been at UL for one season. He backstabbed his own friend.

 

- He signed a 10 year contract to coach at UL and then left after one season. Not that big a deal in the big picture, especially since he left for an NFL head coaching job. That stuff happens, but still more insight into his lack of character.

 

- He quit on his NFL team before his first season coaching there had even ended. Not only did he quit, but the way he just left without facing his team is more insight into lack of character. He left a note with the players telling them he had quit.

 

- Petrino violated so many policies in the affair fiasco at Arkansas that it is hard to believe anyone will hire him. He had an affair, he lied about the affair, he lied to the police on an accident report, he lied to the university, he hired the woman he was having an affair with, he paid the woman $20,000 ... is there anything else the man could have done improperly?

These are all reasons why I want him. He has to understand what is at stake for him at this point. If he proves to be the same old Bobby then that could possibly be it for him at least in the SEC. He's not a young fella so he has to wisen up and recognize the opportunity he has. Just because he can flat out coach doesn't mean he'll keep getting that opportunity to coach higher level football. I'm interested to see if anyone besides UK even looks at him. After Lane Kiffin I'd be shocked if UT went after him. We know Arkansas won't. Maybe Auburn will. Either way it goes he does have a reputation and if he is going to right the ship I prefer he do so at UK. I'd hate to see him finally get right and turn some other program around. Especially if the coach UK hires a coach that doesn't do as good as Petrino.

There are simply too many other good candidates that would embrace this opportunity, than to reduce yourself to hiring Petrino.
