August 10, 201214 yr Should the fact that something is a "sin" or "sin-like" be taken into consideration when forming laws? I might add that it would be a very slippery slope. If they did that, then telling a lie, sex outside of marriage, lust, hate and many other things would be illegal. We don't want that do we?
August 10, 201214 yr Sin-like is pretty subjective. Our laws have to reflect a moral responsibility, so I think most laws will go along with what the mainstream religiosly minded individual considers good. But other than that, my answer would probably be no. Religion and Politics are two different animals and I don't think our lawmakers need check with God before they enact legislation. Overall, we agree. However I'm under the impression that many think that it should be illegal BECAUSE it's a sin. I then hear that sins have no level so I'm struggling with what seems to be a contradiction.

August 10, 201214 yr Is being straight a sin? If you're straight you're having lustful thoughts about people of the other sex. If you can have those thoughts about opposite sex people, not act on them and not be a sinner then why not for gays? I don't think being straight is sinful, I do think being straight and having sex outside of marriage is sinful. I don't see any inconstantcy at all. At first blush your argument seems logical. However, we attach a "sin" to being homosexual because we know what that entails. We do not do that with heterosexuals. We've also set rules for what constitutes sin that make being homosexual inherently sinful.
August 10, 201214 yr There are some people who seem to find themselves inherently attracted to children. What makes that inherently sinful?

We've also set rules for what constitutes sin that make being homosexual inherently sinful. Who is this we you speak of? I'm speaking strictly for myself. The question was do YOU think homosexuality is a sin, not does society think homosexuality is a sin. I answered based on my beliefs, not on some societal notion. I still see no inconsistancy.
August 10, 201214 yr You are mostly correct. It was at that council that the early Church all but decided which books would go into what would become the Bible and which ones would not. It was a process that evolved over the two centuries prior and was really cemented when the books were chosen by Pope Damasus and St. Jerome to go into the first Latin Vulgate Bible in the early fifth century. In truth, the Catholic Church didn't have an offical Biblical Canon until the Council of Trent. First time I've ever heard of this. Do you agree with Mex that much of what the Bible says isn't exactly the word of God because of this?
August 10, 201214 yr First time I've ever heard of this. Do you agree with Mex that much of what the Bible says isn't exactly the word of God because of this? I definitely wouldn't say "because of this." In fact, this is the reason the Catholic Church has always taught that truth exists in many extra-biblical writings. So there are more sources for discerning God's truth, not less. Now, I am also of the opinion that biblical writings are a product of a place and time. Over the centuries, some things that were very important to us have become not so important. The story of Christianity is the story of how Christ's followers lived with the fact that He didn't come back the next week. Personally, I'm doing the best I can with the information that's been put in front of me. To paraphrase Thomas Merton, I don't know what I'm doing, but I believe that the fact that I want to please Him, pleases Him.

I've always taken the Bible as a moral guide, not as the literal word of God. I can't believe that he would make homosexuals and then punish them in hell for their inability to fight urges, while heteros are cool to have sex during marriage.

August 10, 201214 yr I know the Catholic Church says it's a sin, but I can't bring myself to agree. It's different, and I would say, "not normal", but so is being born with one limb missing.
August 10, 201214 yr How can we not have a sin scale when we are saying that laws should be based upon it being a sin? Well, that would mean that our laws are founded in scripture. It's obvious we don't really think that means much.

I can't believe that he would make homosexuals and then punish them in hell for their inability to fight urges, while heteros are cool to have sex during marriage. I respect your opinion. I do hope that you're right. Because if the Bible is correct, and I fully believe it is, Christ is the only way. No man enters Heaven but by Him. As for fighting urges, I often fight the urge to shoot people in the head. Just sayin'. Why is it that we always put God in a box as a puppeteer that always pacifies His people? I know that if folks don't think God's Word is true, this won't mean much, but God is a just God. The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord.
