The notion that HHS puts out this Spartan like effort with only 300 boys has been debated ad nauseum on this forum and I really don't feel like rehashing it again. HHS has a great program and draws from a much larger area than the 16 thousand or so people that live in Ft. Thomas. There is nothing wrong with that and more power to them but they are not this small little school that despite all adversity manage to still be successful. Any effort to paint them as such is disingenous at best IMO.

HHS is definitely on the same level as Trinity. Trinity is on a very good run the last few years where they are in the nations elite but they are not year in and year out on a different level than HHS.

So a program that is "on another level" compared to the second best program in the state has not won state over 40 times???

 

Again sarcasm, but it makes my point. They are having a good run with a couple good classes and the PROGRAM is excellent and I would say better because of several factors (number of boys, area for available student-athletes, etc), but another level is absurd. Enjoy your run, but don't get too high on yourself.

 

Woah, woah, woah...I never said another level. Wasn't me. I am guilty of saying Trinity is a better program than Highlands by a hair if that much and if you look deep enough you'll find I have said Highlands is a better program at one point also. Maybe even in the same thread. I can be swayed easily sometimes. Lots of good points made on this board.

 

Relax your mind. All I am pointing out is that using statistical data Trinity has won a state title once every three years in its existence.

So what's your best guess as to how many players in any one year are from outside this little ole' berg of 17,000?

Still only have 300-400 boys. Really don't get why you don't feel that's a disadvantage. Yes, they have some kids that relocate or pay tuition to be part of the program, but 90% of them are home grown in the little city.

 

Beechwood, Cov Cath, NCC and Ryle all have the same situation regarding kids coming to their program. HHS is successful because of the kids that grow up wanting to play football for Highlands, not because of a handful of transfers that want to be a part of the winning program.

 

Yes, they have a good coaching staff. But everyone has the same opportunity to go hire a good coaching staff.

 

Its the hard work and dedication that the kids buy into and are willing to go the extra mile to be successful is what makes their program. Not having over 1000 boys to choose from in one of the largest cities in KY. Take away almost a 1000 random selection of boys from Trinity ( think its been said that Trinity has around 1369 boys to HHS 400) and see if they would still be an elite program. They may be, but let that sink in. They can't pick and choose who stays and who goes, so not just the non athletes would go. For every honor student, band guy, and non athlete, an athlete is removed. Even if they kept their best players, their depth would surely take a hit.

I don't think the Trinity football program is even 60 years old but they have won a state title in 1/3 of the years they have been established. How long has Highlands been around?

 

Not a bad point. Both schools have the same number of recognized titles in the same time span. I don't know if HHS claims any other titles in the years before 1959.

Ryle on the other hand has a defined district and cannot accept tution based students so no advantage for them unless a parent is willing to buy a house in Union. Highlands and probably Beechwoods tution is also probably a quarter of what any of the area private schools is as well. Couldn't agree more! Because of Highland's success over the years, people forget how little of a school Highlands really is. Until a few years ago, Highlands had always played up in class. They always had to beg the state NOT to move them down. They finally got moved down to the correct level...against their will. I don't think you'd find many programs begging to play up these days.

 

And just like this post says, with the enrollment differences, Trinity should be embarrassed that Highlands is even mentioned in the same breath as them. With range of area they are able to draw from and the fact that Trinity has 3 times the number of boys, Trinity should destroy Highlands every year!!! Highlands is just a small town school.

Unfortunately, I will be working at the St. Joseph Orphans' Home Picnic and will not be able to attend. At the Green-White scrimmage, I thought T looked a little ragged on offense, although it was hard to tell who was who and which team (1,2 or 3) they were going against. I thought T's D played well, though, and seemed to have no aversion to hitting and being physical. T will miss D lineman Pat Barry (who I think is playing at Murray) but if Hatcher plays consistently, then I hope they will be OK. It looked like back-up QB Reggie Bonnafin (sp) was playing at tight end and T had soph RB Don Brooks playing in the slot some as well as carrying the ball. I think T will be a very fast team this year. Depending on how much experience HHS has coming back, this could be a very good scrimmage. By no means do I see any kind of blow out. (I do know Towles will be hard to replace, though.) I think T's D will have to carry the Shamrocks for a while until the O gets fine-tuned. Admittedly, T has some weapons on O if they can get untracked. I imagine HHS does, too.

 

I saw the scrimmage as well. The T D was pretty awesome IMHO. Offense has understandably a "ways to go." Felt better about what I saw when I learned afterward that it was only their 3rd day in Pads. If so - that explains a lot. D has some hitters. REally like our skill players. Alot of kids "applying for jobs." Year in and Year out we just try and put a competitive team on the field.

Ah, there's that great Louisville attitude we've all grown to love!
