Been dealing with an injury to my right rib cage for about 5-6 weeks now. It doesn't really hurt at all when I'm at the gym but I hit the golf course to play 18 and it kills. Today it got to the point that I didn't even play the last 4 holes, now when I cough, breathe in deep, raise my right hand it's a sharp pain. Not sure if it's a stress fracture, nerve or what but it kills. I feel like it's too far in the front to be my lat so I'm thinking it's gotta be a rib or even a couple of ribs. Really don't want to go to the doctor for it as I know he's just going to tell me to take 4-6 weeks off of golf. In addition to being painful I've also experienced a rather noticable drop off in power as well, any thing over 140 yards I pretty much have to use a 4-5 iron or 3 wood to make sure I get the ball there. Has any one else ever experienced any thing similar?

^Not really experienced anything similar, but I do know rib injuries can be horrible. Most people don't realize how sore and tired playing golf can make you, but it wears me out and beats me up. I couldn't imagine how I'd feel with bum ribs, tough spot to be in.

Yeah I never play blacks either its hard enough as it is.

 

I'm with you there. I've played with a few guys who "want to see the whole course".

Many years ago I was in a wreck. Head bubbled out the windshield, ribs folded the steering wheel across the dash (wear your seatbelts, folks). I had only been playing golf for 3 or 4 years so I was still real gung-ho to play at least once a week.

 

The ribs kept me from being able to swing a club. I sat for about three weeks. Didn't like it but had no choice.

The way I see it, unless your on the tour or playing a big tournament, an amateur golfer has no business on the blacks. Some courses have tee's between the white and black, in those instances I will normally play the tees closest to the tips.

I'm going camping at Kincaid Lake in a few weeks. I go every year and amazingly I have never played the course. Just doesn't look appealing to me. All hills. However I will likely play this time. Anyone every played out there?

If your handicap isn't under 5 you shouldn't be playing the tips anywhere IMO.

It's only 9 holes. Holes one and nine are near the entrance to the park and are really quite level. Hole three is up the hill but on a ridge so not that bad. Number 4 is a par 5 and quite hilly. Bogey is a good score from any of the tees. Number 5 is a par 3 and no trouble if you carry your tee shot to the green or at least to the top of the hill. Six is slightly downhill dogleg left with plenty of trouble to the left(a nice hole). Seven is a bear, downhill dogleg right and you must carry a ravine on your second shot. Hated the course the first few times but the more I played it the better i liked it. It's far from one of my favorites but if one hits the ball straight, you can score well on it. Left out number 8- par 3, nice hole.

The way I look at it is this: If I'm paying for the golf, why play where I can't score from? The back tees are a nightmare on some of the courses we play here.

Does Hickory Sticks still have the old guys special on Wednesdays? Something like $20 for 18 and a cart if you're 55? I haven't been this year so I don't know if they still do that.

The tips are 6500+ I believe. Have never seen anyone play them. Of course the course is nearly deserted every time we play it.

Some courses you have to play the tips otherwise you are hitting 1/2 wedges in every hole. Example The Pioneer at Kenton County. We always play the golds at Fox Run which is 6750 yards. I used to play the tips every once in awhile when I had a membership there. This time of year with it the fairways being so hard it doesn't make as big of a difference. However if it's been raining and course is wet it makes an enourmous difference as it is about 7200 yards I believe. Took my boy to Boone Links Sunday afternoon and played 9. The day started bad when we unload our clubs and he tells me he doesn't have his putter in his bag. It took all of my patience to let him know that can't happen again. They were nice enough to lend us one. My youngest is 13 and we got paired with 2 guys that were very nice. It's usually just the two of us on Sunday afternoons at Fox Run so playing with strangers was new to him and he got shook up big time. I told him he would get it used to it. I was very pleased to shoot a 40 with 13 putts.

Headed up to Paw Paw Michigan for our family vacation next week. I'm in charge of setting up tee times for 3-4 days for 6-8 guys. Anyone familiar with courses in that area or within say 45 minutes of Paw Paw. I laugh every time I type Paw Paw!!!

Played there once a couple of years ago and enjoyed it. Shot about 41 as I recall. It was a hot day; practically nobody else on the course.

 

It does help to hit it in the short grass off the tee, even if you're not a long hitter.
