I did not see the situation or situations you describe, but that doesn't sound like he was playing tough. That sounds out of control. Mental toughness is channeling emotions and helping your team.

 

Young men will lose their cool from time to time. My understanding was there were lots of conversations/taunting going on in the hallways at school that led to some of the incidents.

I do not think Henschen was out with an injury, rather he was sick. Not sure who the red players were that missed games other than Mayhew and Cain, one of which was injured by someone stepping on his hand and badly breaking a finger. Again I think these are just a part of being a football player. The kids will get a much needed break over the next two weeks to recharge their batteries and get ready for the long season ahead. First game is now less than two months away and I am sure Coach Behymer and the rest of the staff are chomping at the bit to get things going.

 

 

I guess a definition of toughness would be the Cain broken finger (on his throwing hand) requiring 2 pins to repair. Broke on the second play of the game. Didn't say anything to the coach for fear he would be taken out and proceeded to throw a touchdown and extra point pass, catch an extra point, run a 45 yard td, pick off a pass and record 4 tackles for loss at outside linebacker. Taken to the emergency room after the game and finger broken in two places... Maybe not the smartest thing to do by continuing to play but I would say the kids pretty tough.

No kidding. At this point I'd have to predict it's going to be a long Highlands frosh football season on here. Seems like it's more than just the kids that are going to have to adjust to high school football.

I know over the years that Highlands has always been considered a finess team and not much talk about how tough they are. It is the people that don't go watch the Birds or frosh Birds practice two a days in August, that make this assumption. I think the reason people look at Highlands as a finess team is because the offense runs so smoothly. Toughness is instilled in these kids as early as the FTJFL, and the older they get the tougher they are.

Tough, not tough....Whatever. Are they gonna be good and why?

 

If they win they'll be tough, if they lose well then some may say not tough. The fact is this team and every other team has kids on it that are tough and others that are not. No big deal, that is the way it is.

Good Luck to the two Frosh, Dougherty RB and Cain WR, heading to the University of Texas for the Team USA 15U National Team!!! Nice recognition for a couple of pretty good athletes. Partial here, but good kids off the field as well. They should represent HHS in good fashion.

Very true about both of them. When are these games played? Who do they play against?

 

It is my understanding that they will report to Austin next Friday. There will be various training sessions, 7 v 7, jamboree and games on Thursday. Could play team made up of other kids from US or a team from another country. Sounds like a great opportunity for the kids to show what they can do against some national competition, get feedback on their performance and then bring that knowledge back to Ft. Thomas and get ready for the upcoming frosh season. Also just a little more national exposure for the Highlands football program.

Good thing you didn't go. Those soft kids were at it long before you got yourself motivated. Fresh were on the field at about 7:45 this morning.

Just a little part of building toughness. If you want to play there you are going to have to sacrafice some other things. Sleeping in like many of your peers is just one of those sacrafices. There will be many more to come.

Tdy have you seen them try to practice in the valley with the softball setup in place. Why is that still there. I have not seen it used once since the season ended.

I was told that everything will be coming down and the field will be used for football practice. This is the last year that this will occur and beginning next year everything will be permanent and Death Valley will become a softball complex. Also heard some grumblings about new "blue" turf for the football field. Not sure how true that is, but the soccer field is coming along nicely.

Death valley is now softball valley. The fence will stay up year round now. There will be a real fence put up over the next year but until then the plastic stays year round. The ftjrfl will no longer be paying games there either. That was deal struck with the ad pricaple and super last fall. The girls have been practing on thur and playing games on tues nights there.
