Former Powell County head coach and current Montgomery County head coach, Chris Varney was inducted into the KHSAA Hall of Fame this past weekend.

Played at Hazard where he won two regional championships.

He started his coaching career at June Buchanan before moving to Hazard as an assistant for three years. During those three years he was part of two regional championship teams. He then took over at Powell County for 12 years where he won two regional championships and was regional runner-up three times.

In his first year at Montgomery County (last season), he won the 40th district championship and took Montgomery County to the regional championship game.

Former Owsley County graduate and EKU player Bryan Dean was also inducted along with Varney. He also coached at Powell County and was region runner-up twice while coaching there and later coached for 10 years at Letcher Central and won three regional championships while there. He has also coached at Breathitt County and is currently a high school coach in Alabama.

Wasn't Coach Varney at Powell Co. for several years? I also think he played at Alice Lloyd with a couple of East Carter's coaches as well.

Yes. He was at Powell County for 12 years. Almost took Estill County's job when Jeremy Sparks stepped down. Was on the verge of taking the Estill County job but Powell County offered him something better and Estill wouldn't match it.
