BluegrassPreps.com 11th Region Week 1 Recap and Rankings

Recommended Posts

An exciting opening week to the season all around the state of Kentucky but particularly in the 11th Region. Lots of changes in the rankings, some surprises and some expected results. The 11th Region is already shaping up to be much more competitive then I initially expected and I can see these rankings changing a ton weekly. Having said that, lets get straight to it!!

Team Of The Week - Bryan Station

Tons of teams could make a case to be this weeks team of the week but I'm going to go with the Bryan Station Defenders. The Defenders finish the week strong at 3-0 including a road win in the city and a neutral court victory to end the weekend. Congrats to the Defenders!!

Player of the Week - Dustin Geralds - Madison Central

What a week for not only Dustin Geralds but the Madison Central Indians as a whole!! The Indians finished the week 3-0 and Geralds led the way averaging 24.7 points and 18.3 rebounds!! Those are unheard of numbers!! Congrats to Dustin and the Indians on an outstanding week!!

Team Rankings

1. Scott County (2-0) - The Cardinals finish the week 2-0 with impressive wins over Cordia and at Ballard. The Cardinals dug a huge hole early at Ballard and found a way to pull it out at the end. Michael Moreno paced the Cardinals this week averaging 29.0 points and 14.5 rebounds per game. The Cardinals are starting to round into form with Cooper Robb and Glenn Covington returning from football. They are still the team to beat in the region. This the Cardinals host Lexington Christian and then travel to Frederick Douglass for two pivotal 11th Region matchups!! Big week for Scott County.

2. Madison Central (3-0) - The Indians jump up to the number 2 spot this week with 3 impressive victories. The Indians beat down rival Madison Southern early in the week, beat a good Lafayette team in a close one, and ended the week throttling a short handed Frankfort team. As mentioned in the player of the week segment, Dustin Geralds has an outstanding week!! Geralds along with Isaiah Cozart helped the Indians claim a huge advantage on the glass while Isaiah Minter held down the point guard duties well all week. Up next for the Indians is a clash with top 15 George Rogers Clark, which should be a great one, and a visit from another 10th region school Montgomery County.

3. Henry Clay (2-0) - The team making the biggest jump in the rankings this week is the Henry Clay Blue Devils!! During the preview I said I wasn't sure about this team, well they answered in a big way this week with 2 blowout wins over city competition. First they visited Frederick Douglass and ran all over them and then did the same at Tates Creek in one of the more impressive showings of anyone in the region. Keaston Brown showed he was back and better then ever knocking down shots all over the floor. The biggest surprise for the Blue Devils was the play of senior guard Jalen Williams who had 2 impressive showings this week. Up next the Blue Devils host district rival Bryan Station and travel to Louisville Eastern.

4. Lexington Christian (1-1) - The Eagles drop this week in the rankings but don't expect them to stay down long. LCA started the week with a nice win on the road over Harrison County and then fell this weekend to a good team Corbin on a neutral floor in a close game. Austin Hall and Kyle Rode are both averaging double doubles early in the season to pace the Eagles. This is a big week for the Eagles as they host Tates Creek for a district game, head to Scott County, and travel to Robertson County to face Pendleton County. Plenty of opportunities to show what they are made of this week.

5. Lexington Catholic (2-1) - The Knights started off the week with a nice road win over Wolfe County and the returned home and gave top 5 Covington Catholic all they wanted before falling by 2 late. They rebounded nicely by traveling to Marshall County and defeating the Marshals in a close game. Zan Payne has been a force for Lexington Catholic averaging 24.7 points and 9.5 rebounds to start the season. Up next the Knights host Corbin and Paul Laurence Dunbar before heading to face Pulaski County at Jackson County.

6. Bryan Station (3-0) - The Defenders were our team of the week and rightfully so. They won all 3 games this week in convincing fashion over Boyle County, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Dixie Heights. Eric Boone, Terrance Clayton-Murphy, and Jalen Burbage all averaged double figures for the Defenders this week. Up next Bryan Station travels to Henry Clay for a huge district matchup, then to Tates Creek, and finish out the week at Frederick Douglass. A great chance for the Defenders to set the pace early in the 42nd District!!

7. Lafayette (1-1) - The Generals picked up a nice win early in the week over Lincoln County and then fell at Madison Central in a very tight contest. Lafayette continues to flat get after you defensively and has gotten solid play down low from Ray Surratt who is averaging a double double early in the season. This week Lafayette hosts district rival Paul Laurence Dunbar and faces CAL on a neutral floor. Expect the Generals to continue their solid play.

8. Frederick Douglass (1-1) - Welcome to the 11th Region Broncos!! Your gift was a opening game with one of the better teams in the area, Henry Clay. I know the Broncos were missing a couple of players in this contest due to a suspension. They did bounce back by capturing the first victory in school history over Sayre later in the week. Still hard to tell what the Broncos really have at this point but Justin Mitchell is solid as ever. Up next for Douglass they will host East Jessamine and then another gift in the way of a visit from the top team in the region, Scott County!!

9. Woodford County (3-0) - What a great start to the season for the Yellow Jackets!! They finish the week 3-0 with some impressive wins over Dunbar, Grant County, and on the road at 8th region power Anderson County!! Brandon Cromwell poured in 23.7 points per game this week and Nick Smith was right behind him at 19.3!! The Yellow Jackets are looking great early in the season. A big week for them as they travel to Western Hills and host Franklin County in two early season 41st District matchups!!

10. Paul Laurence Dunbar (0-2) - The Bulldogs are off to a rough start after falling at Woodford County this week and then losing a rivalry game at home to Bryan Station. A bright spot for Dunbar was the play of senior point guard JaQuice Gray who had two outstanding games. Things get no easier for the Bulldogs as they travel to Lafayette and Lexington Catholic this week in 2 huge 43rd district showdowns.

11. Franklin County (2-1) - The Flyers started off the week with a tough close loss to a good Paris team but bounced back with two nice wins over Spencer County and Lawrence County. Jared Courtney and Kyle Stivers paced the Flyers this week, both having stellar performances in their 2 victories. Up next the Flyers travel to Collins and Woodford County. The Woodford game will go a long way for both teams to see where they stand in the 41st District.

12. Tates Creek (0-1) - Only one game for the Commodores this week, but it wasn't pretty. Henry Clay came to Centre Parkway and made a statement beating Tates Creek by 40. This is still a young team with room to improve and missing Amari Taylor isn't helping things. Things get no easier as Tates Creek travels to LCA, hosts Bryan Station, and then faces Belfry on a neutral court to finish out the week.

13. Sayre (1-1) - The Spartans started off the week with a nice win over East Jessamine before falling to district opponent Frederick Douglass. RJ Smith continued his nice play from a season ago pouring in over 20 points in both games. Up next for the Spartans is a trip to Frankfort to play the Panthers and a neutral court date with Garrard County.

14. Madison Southern (1-1) - The Eagles had a rough start to the season dropping a big one to Madison Central but bounced back nicely with a win over Estill County. Shawn Short and Trent Moberly had nice weeks for Coach Buttry's squad. This week the Eagles host North Laurel and face Lincoln County on a neutral floor.

15. Western Hills (2-1) - The Wolverines started off the week with a big win over Owen County. They fell in overtime to Henry County and then bounced back with an overtime victory over Shawnee. Troy Amanor had 3 big games for Western Hills and Peyton Cody helped pace them with strong outside shooting. This is a big week for Western Hills with two district games, first at home against Woodford County and then they travel to Frankfort to end the week.

16. Frankfort (0-2) - Tough start to the season for the Panthers. Not only did they drop two games this week to North Oldham and Madison Central but they are missing key players DaJuan Davis and Juanya Frank to suspension for an undetermined amount of time. Hard to say what this team could be without those guys. Up next the Panthers host Sayre and Western Hills.

17. Model (4-0) - The Patriots are off to a 4-0 start with blowout victories in all 4 over Washington County, Lee County, White Academy out of Tennessee, and Dayton. Their schedule continues to matchup favorable for them with St. Patrick coming to Richmond this week.

18. Berea (3-0) - The Pirates are off to a nice start with victories over Dayton, White Academy, and Lee County. A couple more winnable games this week hosting Calvary Christian and then traveling to Model to play Trimble County.
