1.Perry County Central (20-4):

The best team in the 14th region and they proved it again this afternoon when they traveld to whitesburg and defeated Letcher Central, another top 10 region contending team on their own home floor. The Commodores are 10-1 in their last 11 games, that’s actually their record since January 1st. Their lone loss coming to Southwestern on Saturday. The Commodores will travel to Clay County on Tuesday and host Leslie County on Wednesday.

 

 

2.Cordia (15-7):

The Lions had their 9 game win streak snapped on Saturday when they got throttled by Mercer County 66-47 in the Pulaski County Don Marshall Classic. Cordia did defeat Buckhorn two days before falling to Mercer County. In their final two remaining games on the season, the Lions will travel to Harlan County on Thursday and host Rowan County on Saturday.

 

 

3.Hazard (17-4):

The Bulldogs are one of the hottest teams in the 14th region as we enter the final week of the regular season. Since December 17th, the Bulldogs are 14-2, before that they had went 3-2. All 4 of Hazard’s losses have came to region opponents; Perry Central (twice), Knott Central, and Cordia. Hazard defeated Jackson City 4l8-39 and Leslie County 66-50 last week. Hazard will host Jenkins on Tuesday and travel to Powell County on Friday.

 

 

4.Letcher County Central (17-9):

Letcher Central has been struggling as of late, only winning 2 of their last 6 games. Before that, the Cougars had went 6-2. Letcher County Central will look to rebound this week when they host Leslie County on Tuesday and travel to Pike Central on Thursday.

 

 

5.June Buchanan (18-7):

June Buchanan has been playing good ball lately as they have all year; defeating teams like Letcher Central, Knott Central, Buckhorn. JBS has an outstanding player in Idris Akinyemi who is averaging 11 boards a game for the Crusaders. Idris grabbed 22 boards and had 13 points in his team’s win over South Floyd last week. JBS will travel to Harlan County on Tuesday.

 

 

6.Buckhorn (12-14):

Buckhorn is starting to play some good ball lately after having a rough season. Buckhorn has won 4 out of their last 5 games. Wins include Estill County, Breathitt County, Knott Central and Riverside Christian. Buckhorn even took Cordia to the limit last Thursday when they fell to the Lions 66-63. Buckorn will host Knox Central on Tuesday, travel to Jenkins on Thursday and host Sheldon Clark on Friday.

 

 

7.Breathitt County (15-12):

The Bobcats are struggling as we close out the season. Bobcats are just 1-5 in their last 6 games with their lone win coming over Estill County. Breathitt County travels to Estill County on Tuesday night and hosts Powell County on Wednesday.

 

 

8.Knott County Central (10-13):

Knott Central is finally showing signs of life after going 1-11 in the middle of the season. Patriots are 3-1 including a 78-68 win over Breathitt County. Patriots also picked up wins over Jenkins and Powell County while falling to Buckhorn. Patriots will host Rowan County on Friday.

 

 

9.Leslie County (11-10):

After going 4-6 in their first 10 games to begin the season, Leslie County has went 7-4 since their 6th loss that was a part of their 4-6 record to begin the season. Leslie County has some good region wins over Breathitt, Knott Central and even took Perry Central to the limit but they are 8-6 vs. region opponents with 0 wins vs. top 5 region teams. Leslie County will travel to Letcher Central and Perry Central Tuesday and Wednesday and host OBI on Friday.

 

 

10.Jackson City (11-15):

Jackson City is a hot team right now, winning 7 straight before seeing it come to an end at the hands of Hazard 48-39. Some of the wins include 13th region’s Jackson County, Berathitt County and Wolfe county. Tigers will host Lee County on Tuesday.

 

 

11.Wolfe County (19-8):

Wolfe County is 11-4 vs region opponents but none of them are against any of the top 5 teams.

 

 

12.Powell County (12-12):

Pirates are starting to pick up speed as the season comes to an end. Pirates are 5-2 in their last 7 games and hadn’t won 3 straight games before the start of February. Powell County will host Wolfe County and Hazard on Tuesday and Friday and travel to Breathitt County on Wednesday.

 

 

13.Estill County (8-17);

Engineers continue to struggle, have went 1-5 in their last 6 wins with the lone win coming over Berea.

 

 

14.Lee County (8-15):

Bobcats have won back to back games, only one of those were against a region team, Riverside Christian.

 

 

15.Owsley County (6-17):

Owls woes continues, are now 1-5 in their last 6 games.

 

 

16.Jenkins (1-24):

Cavaliers lone win came against Riverside Christian, since that win the Cavs have lost 16 straight.

 

 

17.Riverside Christian (2-24):

Rams picked up their second win on Saturday defeating Piarist School 56-36.

After watching both PCC and Cordia at Pulaski, Cordia looks like a much better team.. Maybe it was just that game, but PCC didn't impress me.

 

I realize Cordia has some losses, but weren't most of those with a limited roster? Going into Saturday, they had not lost in 2016, having won 9 straight with recent wins over Newport Catholic and Murray (by a large margin).
