  1. That is true, I think officials get this label but with reality, it is rules knowledge that is the realy problem. Not knowing who officiated, we usually work in the 14th due to them having low number of official but we did not have this one. Probably due to the Clay being from our region. It could have been a crew from the 15th....? That is a lot of points and not sure if you can blame poor officiating to all those points. Sometimes you just have to look in the mirror, both teams. Yes, one player can be DQ in a game. Did he throw a punch? As a veteran official, I do remember my younger years and blame a lot of my mistakes on poor rules knowledge but yet fans will continue to say I cheat or whatever they want to say. That is unfortunate but most of us know this prior to becoming an official.... good luck to both teams the rest of the year.
  2.    they probably looked like this the next morning.... good stories....
  3. easy, I am sure they will have a good crew on this one.....Does anyone ever know the officiating crew prior to the game? What was the problem with the Bath game at P'burg?
  4. Chain crew problems can be easily corrected if you have a good linesman. They will meet the crew, give them their expectations and most of all be neutral. I always explain to them about not yelling for their team and if they have a problem, let me know and I will take care of it. Most of them has a child playing on the team and at times you find problems with confrontations on the sideline. It always goes back to the official on the side. I also like the chains off the side of the field, I alway work in the white and want the room for my own safety. A good official will not allow coaches onto the field during live ball play. Now, if you are on the 10 going in for a score, most coaches swing around but they are not in our way. Another thing that is discussed with the coaches. If you have a problem, we should flag it early and not late. Remember, this sideline has a lot of testosterone floating around between the 15 coahces and the 30-70 players on the team. And yes, chains, opposite of the press box. You can always have the home team to have that sideline as their home team box.....
  5. no thanks, as an official I am pleased to see when we are not slandered. I often say, an SEC or NFL crew could not please a fan or coach.....
  6. As it was or was not an upset, I am happy to see that my brothers' in stripes done a good job. I hope, no one has bashed them on the thread. I am sure they had their best crew on the game....?
  7. lol, smarter than me.... If you ever want to, I am sure we can get you some stripes...
  8. turf? that is great.... Are you an official in the region? I have worked with some guys from that region and they do a heck of a job...
  9. That is probably true, work the chains, headache but BJ is the rocking chair... Does the 15/16th region crews work with the chains back off the sideline?
  10. Take care of that referee on the sideline!!!!!!!!!!!
  11. very little, but yes, it's uncommon. Probably the tackling of a elgible receiver would be the one time it would be called. I have not seen this at any level in my games. One thing to remember, incidental contact is a real thing...... and is not a foul.....
  12. By rule if there was 12 on the field at the snap, penalty. Again, officials can use judgement, was the kid actually going to participate? Was he busting his butt to get to the sideline? Did the defense know he was leaving? You must understand that some offenses will try and deceive the defense. You remember back when Boomer was with the Bengals and they would get this call all the time. I think from hearing what happened, it was the right call. I spoke to someone and they told me the 15th had the game. That is a good association. No matter, you are always going to get statements that are negative toward officials.
  13. True statement, in high school, OT is not all that common and our understandinig of the procedures lack at times than normal periods. I am sure that could have been a reason behind the slow response.
  14. What region were the officials from? It sounds to me the infraction some a referring was +11 on the field. Yes, by rule this is a 15 yarder but if the officials could have flagged it prior to the snap or at the snap, it would be a 5 yarder. If in fact they had 12 on the field during live ball, it is a 15 yarder. I know JC used 16th last year, who did they use Friday?
  15. Do you remember the films of Miami great Larry Czonk?sp, he would deliver his helmet as a ram to buck. That is what we are looking for, players who want to punish other players. Contact with helmets will be made, no doubt and all of them are not penalties. Another, player is down and another player leads with helmet into the pack, flag. I don't think this is much of a change as it has been the past couple of years. Officials will penalize conduct on the side of safety.
  16. helmet to helmet? Any flags dropped on this? This is a POE this year. How was the officiating in the 15th? The 13th has a lot of newbies, the 14th, well, they have no one and we work most of their games.
  17. 13th and our region works a ton of games in the 14th. Where are you calling?
  18. Just to build off the thread from NKY thread of officials going, what in the world has happened to the officials from the 14th region. I know we cover a lot of games for them, we work more games in that region than they cover all year long. Any thoughts? Anyone care? What schools are in the 14th? Perry, Hazard, Letcher, Leslie, Knott, Powell, Breathitt, Estill?, Did I miss anyone?
  19. I do all three, but football just becomes so natural to me, I also call college and with the rules differences between the two, that keeps me on my toes. Yes, it has been mentioned that we maybe asked not to call on Fridays for that reason. As far as which is the easiest, to me, it's football but now, baseball has some wicked rules that can blind side you. It's not all about balls and strikes, safes and outs, baseball has some odd rules, mechanics depending how many are calling. As far as college, much easier, two more officials... 7 men instead of 5, I would be screaming at the KHSAA for 7 men during the last couple of week of playoffs and championship games. There's so much to cover, very difficult to position yourself with 5 men. As far as which region, it depends, NKY is good, very good, they have their own clinics each year, they do a lot of public work throughout their regions, Matt Young and folks do a great job. I have called with a lot of officials from different regions, we are all the same but some have that ability to call the BIG game. Not sure where they're going but like was mentioned a few have went onto the college ranks. Some of use continue to work high school but different conference supervisors have different policies.
  20. I agree. You still cannot hide the fact that players head hunt to punish others, IT WILL NOT BE TOLERATED IN MY GAMES. Other hits we see, player down and another come head first with the helmet, it has always been a foul but not called, verbal warnig, no rules says to give verbal warning but it is spoken behind the scenes to preventative officiating. You can't prevent something that continues to happen, you must react and penalize. The power of the flag and the yards lost will get the attention of the coach to correct the behavior.
  21. Here's a site for many of you... http://www.nfhs.org/web/2007/04/2007_football_rules_changes.aspx here's another that speaks about the subject..... http://www.nfhs.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=9;t=002476 This is a tough rule change, one that you will see called different by crews. Why is that...? It's about philosophies.... If RB lowers his head while running and goes at B with his head with intent to punish, FLAG!!!! If he's just lowering his head to push his momentum, no flag.... It will be judgement from official to official. So yes, offense can be penalized for this.... As far as the defense, they better get those heads up and tackle, we will be watching.... I forsee many flags thrown on this and coaches/players will have to adapt. Coaches should be correcting this behavior prior to the season. Hey, I don't want to be officiating a game with a player being seriously injured..... no way, no one does. Face it, we have been conditioned to want the BIG hits, ESPN shows, "jacked up" that is punishing hits. NFHS and KHSAA wants to monitor this and penalize for the behavior.
  22. wishing him well from the 15th Region
  23. Over in Hazard a referee broke his neck in a car wreck, paralyzed and has made a significant recovery. http://www.usafootball.com for the story
