The Great Game

I would not be so quick to underestimate the rest of Ryle's pitching staff as they have been very solid all year long. They have Donovan, Hempel, Rogers, Renda, and Imai all available. Everyone of these pitchers have a winning record this year.

I am guessing it will be Samad for Conner and Donovan for Ryle.

It will be the rubber match to break the 1-1-1 record so far this year. Should be a great game.

You are correct that Deno pitched a great game (he is not overpowering by any means, but crafty), Ryle actually had two hits through the fifth. From what I recall, Boone also only had only 3 hits through the 5th, two of them in that inning, a homer and a single. I wouldn't be so sure it wasn't a game that Ryle shouldn't have won. Check Ryle's schedule against the top teams in the state and then attempt to make that statement. Yes, overall they don't hit the ball consistently (may end up being their downfall) but they do everything else extremely well, and it keeps them in most games even against the top teams.

Final A terrific game played by both teams...excellent pitchers duel between Etscheid and Deno. No scoring until the bottom of the fifth when Boone gets on the board with a homerun, walk, passed ball, and another single, they go up 2-0. Ryle comes back and gets 1 in the top of the sixth. Ryle in the top of the 7th plates two with some defensive miscues, a hit by Carney down the right field line scoring Imai (bobbled allowing him to take 2nd), and then another hit by Lonkard scoring Carney. Boone comes back in the bottom of the frame and scores with a runner on second and a two out line drive that got through Hempel at 3rd. In the top of the 8th, Cody Meier with a fairly severe injured hand hits a 3 run homer over the right center field fence to give Ryle a 6-3 lead. Etscheid comes out to complete his 8th inning of work to seal the win. Congratulations to Boone on a excellent season. As I have said before on BGP, the way some districts worked out this year almost makes it unfair for Boone not to be able to play another day as they are no doubt one of the top teams in the ninth.

TOG, you know I think a bunch about your baseball knowledge, but 1 huge day does not make a POY. Don't get so enamored over Maile's huge day, it was quite a feat, but the POY this year has done it in every category for Cov Cath this year, game in and game out, and that is Isler. Plain and simple, you take him off the team and CovCath does not finish near the record they have. Maile is a terrific ball player but not the POY this year.

I would guess Etscheid for Ryle and if, there is that "if" word again, he pitches like he did vs CovCath the other night Ryle wins.

Does not seem fair when all throughout Kentucky you will have teams with less than half the talent of either one of these get to continue to play after this week because they are in a weak district. We will have it happen up in NKY also, good example...Boone County vs Ryle.

I totally agree...along with his pitching performance last night, which was outstanding, when he got the double to plate both of CovCath's runs I looked at all the fans around me and said "he just won the 9th Region POY". That was a great high school game, and I believe it was mentioned earlier in the thread how well CovCath's infield played, well Ryle's infield easily equaled them making play after play all game. David Etscheid this year against CovCath has only given up a total of 4 runs (2 earned) in 13 innings, no other pitcher in NKY can boast that record.

I have not seen him play but I did hear he is a real nice ball player.

I like Campbell County in this game, IMO they are a better hitting team than Brossart.

Hempel- Ryle P/3B/1B has done a solid job pitching and IMO is probably the best sophmore hitter in NKY, his upside is huge. I think Caleb Lonkard should be added to the list of top sophmores. He plays a great CF, big time arm, and has done a terrific job as the leadoff man for Ryle. Also, solid line drive hitter, with good speed, and smart on the bases.

Even though Conner has two no-hitters in his 6 wins and plays a solid second base to go along with impressive hitting states I have to go with Isler myself. The POY rewards the best all-around player. The 9-0 record, with a ERA of now near 1 all against top flight teams, looks like 60 SO now in 51 innings, only 10 earned runs, leads NKY in doubles-15, second in NKY for rbi's-37 behind Darner, near .400 BA and has only struck out 1 time in 81 plate appearances. No offense to the impressive hitting stats of Darner and Maile and the way they field their position, but these stats are over the top and spells POY.

After last nights games I believe the two front runners now for POY are Connor- NewCath and Isler- CovCath. Here are their stats before last nights game in which Conner throws his second no-hitter against Simon Kenton and Isler throws a 2 hit shutout against Beechwood with 12k's. Along with being dominate pitchers they both have some impressive hitting stats and have played their field positions very well. When looking at POY you have to keep in mind that a major part of this award is based on being the most-valuable player for your team, which clearly these two are. Without these players on their teams, NewCath or CovCath, are not where they are at currently. Donovan settled down nicely after a couple of scratchy innings to shut down Bryan Station. Ryle collected 9 hits but leaves some guys on base. The Raiders had an opportunity to break the game wide open when they had a bases loaded, 1 out situation in the 5th and ended up having nothing to show for it. This game again highlighted by top notch defense, with the O'Hara and Carney combination turning two picture perfect double plays. O'Hara, Takeda, and Etscheid hit the ball well all day.

Etscheid pitches a gem with a 4 hit shutout. David had everything working today and he was dealing. Ryle musters only 4 hits themselves against a really good chucker from Lafayette. Once again very solid D for the raiders!

Why? Is it his approach? Is it his swing? The type of hits he has had? BTW, how games have you seen him play, because if it's 5 or less you are in no position to make that statement. I will add that if we are going to make a case for a all around player (pitching, hitting, playing in the field) being POY then you must include Isler and Smith in this discussion we are having. I will look at the stats but I believe they are similar to Conner. This is fun!:dancingpa
