I have seen on KHSAA scoreboard the Panthers are struggling out of the gate. I haven't seen them play, but can anyone comment on the team this year? I would like to get people's thoughts regarding the change in the coaching staff and if their is any connection to the team's struggles.

Umpire has to decide whether the ball is going to land in fair or foul territory if left alone. Based on what you said about it was coming down in foul territory it would then be a foul ball. It has nothing to do with where it's touched or where it lands after being touched. It depends on where it will land without being touched. Hope you can understand that. In other words - FOUL BALL - take another cut.

I guess after this week this idea doesn't seem as bad anymore. The cold weather turned every game into an arctic nightmare. I saw a shortstop have to run around a penguin to catch a groundball and saw an outfielder chase a really big snowflake yelling "mine" because he thought it was the ball.

Is Matewan that bad or is Pikeville that good or is it some combonation of the two?

Fall Ball has been brought up but shot down by the principals and ADs in the state. Technically the KHSAA is not to blame for that.

I stress that the money raised is for the team and not specific players. I tell the parents that just because they work hard doesn't mean their kid is guaranteed a spot on the team or on the trip. If they expect that then they have their priorities in the wrong place because the team is what matters.

How in the world did Edmonson County get votes? They are horrendous other than their pitcher Rye Davis.

Johns Creek High School was pretty bad before they consolidated with Mullins High School to form Pike County Central around 1996 or so. It had a dirt infield and was right next to the creek and if it rained too hard then the creek came up and covered the field. As bad as that was centerfield to rightfield was about a two foot bank before you got to a heavily traveled road. People would park on the shoulder and you could say the cars were the "fence". It was possible for an outfielder to run up the small bank and make a catch and then a coal truck hit him.

The one I am talking about played at Pikeville College his junior and senior years.

This is Louisville Manual's field and it's pretty messed up but it actually has a very nice infield (or at least 5 years ago it was). The groundrules at this place takes a couple of hours and the opposing coach is given a book detailing all the rules (just kidding by the way)

3rd - Owensboro Catholic, Apollo and Daviess County 5th - Elizabethtown, North Hardin, Central Hardin 6th - PRP, Butler, North Bullitt 7th - St. X, Trinity, Eastern (Louisville) 11th - Henry Clay, Christian, Catholic, Dunbar In my opinion 11th is toughest overall 6th / 7th have the toughest top tier teams 3rd would be the deepest once you get past the top 3 Owensboro schools 5th has a lot of tradition If I had to pick one of mine to be replaced by another region I would say the 5th.

Did a guy by the name of Jeff Jones ever coach there? It would have been around 2000 he coached there. If he did how did he do? I went to college with him and if I remember correctly he told me he was coaching there. I lost track of him about this time. Thanks

I seen that Nick Roberts of Pikeville, now pitching for Georgetown, pitched 4 hitless innings versus Morehead on the 21st and Chase Huffman started against Butler University and threw 4 shutout innings striking out 5.

I feel the 15th region will be one of the weakest regions in the state this year. Due to graduation and the lack of tenure of coaches in the region. Coaches haven't had the opportunity to build their programs nor do they have the support as the other sports do. As evidence based on last years showing in the sectional tournament between Boyd and Sheldon Clark. Boyd outscored Sheldon Clark 33-2 in 2 games. The competition level in the 15th is low now and the winner will be the best of the worst. Just my thoughts and observation and watching the 15th for the last 10 years.

Are you guys able to get on your fields? How do you keep your fields from being mudpits? I spend about a month on the parking lot until our field gets dry enough to get on.

I think our school administration helped me in making this decision about whether or not to stay for games. Before I was head coach - in fact it was three coaches and over 10 years ago - the baseball team went down to Florida and several players got drunk. The administration said no more trips to Florida. It was like that for several years until I got named head coach. Then I wanted to take the team to Hazard to play. The players and parents were all for it (not so much it was Hazard but the chance to get out of town) and the administration was not really for it. My basic argument was "It's Hazard - how are they going to get into trouble there?" No offense to Hazard because I like the town but I think it helped some.

Is that turf or grass? I can't really tell to be honest. I am assuming that is St. X's new field. The fence in front of the dugout has to be there by KHSAA rule - it stinks but it is a rule. If this field is turf that makes two fields that I know of in the state (other one being Pikeville) that high schools use. Are there anymore than this? By the way Pikeville's field is pretty nice but around it could use some work.

That is still not a solution because the kid isn't worried about the team - they are still selfish. If you start doing that and one season you have one kid / group who wants to go to Sarasota; another kid / group wants to go to Orlando; another kid / group wants to go to St. Augustine and then the parents want to go Cocoa Beach - where do you go then? If you go to Florida it is because you are wanting to work on baseball; it is not a vacation. The parents can treat it as one but their kid is there to work. I think a coach needs to find time during the week to do some fun stuff but that is not the focus of the trip. People lose perspective of this.

You are completly correct KYthorobred that there will always be controversy but really what you propose is really not that different than what I am saying. Besides to put on a tournament like that would be a scheduling nightmare for teams. But if you did do it you could line up the use of several college fields to host the various championships.

I just don't think you are looking at the whole picture. The issue is one group wants classes so more people can have a better chance at a state championship and the other group wants it to stay the same so we know who the "true" state champ is. You get both of those by doing this - a single A team will be able to be a state champ every year and so will the other classes. Then they play to see who is the best of the best. You honestly think a small school like Beechwood, Pikeville or Phelps wouldn't be proud of a state championship although they got beat in the first round of the super championship? They would be putting banners up and having parades like crazy. Florida won't play the DII champ but what I propose is similar to what goes on in college already. Every team plays a conference championship tournament and then moves onto the national championship tournament. You always see where a team is proud of a conference championship and have banners put everywhere showing it. Who cares what the other states do - why can't we start some sort of trend that other states adopt?

Thank you vmabaseball - I am glad someone else sees the logic in the idea. I have no hopes of this ever happening but it just comes to mind when you are practicing in 35 degree weather on a parking lot trying to catch groundballs while football players have to knock the living heck out of each other in 95 degree weather with 50% humidity (which means it is a cool day for summer). I say high school is more important than summer but you could still have both. Just start summer early and you may even cut down preseason for high school even more since everyone should be in playing shape.
