Uh-oh. The dirty little secret is out. :eek: Someone made the JC (Johnson Central) comparison, and I think that's a good one. I really thought when Bill Tom Ross went there things would turn around, but he just wasn't healthy enough to get the program turned around. Now I was not close to that situation by any stretch but I perceive that he- as an outsider- filled the pot up with water, put it on the stove, and turned on the burner. The newer administration at JC brought the water to a boil and Matney put int he ingredients for a delicious dinner. Best of all the fine folks at JC finally stood back and LET them do the work. At Greenup you have to think at some point these people will realize they are harming their school's reputation and most of they are doing a complete discredit to their kids. From the outside looking in I can't figure out why anyone would want to coach any sport in Greenup in that environment. I know may Greenup alums and I now a couple fo people very well who work at Greenup schools now and the problem is showing no signs of going away. At some point GC parents and powers-that-be have to stop acting like Junior High kids or Greenup is simply doomed to mediocrity. Simple as that. I hope for their sake they right the ship. As a Raceland alum and a guy who went to Russell for a number of years as well, I want Greenup County schools to excel in all sports. I wish Greenup nothing but the best, but if the culture does not change there is not much hope. It's time for some people involved at GCHS to grow up and let the Coaches do their jobs, to hold their staff accountable, and to cultivate a healthy environment for their kids to play sports in. They owe the kids that.

As much as I love Russell (and Raceland), I think one loss JC is better this season. They should still be #1. Of course it doesn't really matter what I think! LOL!

Indeed. And this isn't just Greenup football, it's basketball as well. Doesn't make sense to me. I feel bad for the kids most of all at Greenup. They deserve better than to have an atheletic program full of drama and they deserve a program that has the respect of everyone in the area. the more things go on GCHS the less respect this area has for Greenup sports. Maybe one of these days some adults will learn it's about the kids and about having fun. That's all that matters.

This one will get out-of-hand quickly. Russell by a lot.

Obviously with 4 ejections this was a physical game. Not all that shocking when these two get together, lots of ill-will. One of the more hostile rivalries in the area. I was at the basketball game in the mid-90's that erupted into a riot. Orange and Green don't mix! :fight: Good win the Rams. Glad to see Raceland healthy at all the skill positions. I believe Corey Justice was as well for GC. All told there were 4 ejections. Radio announcers speculate that a close eye will be required at the post game hand shake, if there is one. Still chippy out there.

Denton scored from 10 yards out. Sparks kick good and the Rams lead it 34-10 with about 3 minutes to play.

Baker currently coaches at Ashland and his son is not quite in High School yet. :thumb:

Russell has nearly double the points for than all the other area NEKC teams. Unreal. The Devils have more than Raceland and Lawrence County COMBINED. I never thought the Rams would not have broken a 100 points by the half way point, let alone be 4 touchdowns from getting there. Good work as always dawgdays!

Great job DawgDays! The NEKC and Scribe's notebook are awesome additions to the awesomeness that is BGP! No doubt. I am sure if you e-mail Rocky Stanley or whoever the sports editor is now with your suggestion they miight take you up on it. You never know.

I would say Russell, their back-to-back trip's to the state title game, and their shiny ring from one of said trips would disagree with Mr. Vankirk's assessment of who reigns supreme in Northern Kentucky football. I think JC is outstanding, don't get me wrong, but Russell's resume is twice that of Johnson Central over the last 25-30 years. I don't know if the 2007 Russell team could beat JC or not, but I would have put money the teams from last two seasons defeating the Golden Eagles. And that's taking nothing away from JC, nor is it a knock on them or their program, I just think it's short sighted on his part to completely overlook the Red Devils and crown a team that has yet to make it the Pizza Box "supreme." Maybe instead of renewing the serieses with Ironton and Wheelersburg Russell and Johnson Cnetral should have gotten together for a series. That I would have loved to see.

This is something that was definitely noticed. Lots of empty seats over in the visitors bleachers tonight. And no band? Greenup can bring their band to Russell but Ashland can't? I told my wife it was nice to see the students involved tonight. Really that's the first time this year I have seen the Russell kids in one place and making a lot of noise. Ashland's students were extremely loud as well. You could hear them like they were next to you up where I sit. The atmosphere tonight was excellent all around. That was the best part of the night! :ylsuper: Jones is a monster. He was still limping after the game, I hope he okay. It looked he got his knee twisted there. I thought Cordle did a great job in relief of Jones as well, he was able to keep very calm and protect the football.

LOL! No let's just say with the Tomcats out of timeouts in the closing seconds they completed a pass and the clock kept ticking when suddenly the wind tweaked someone's knee causing an injury timeout. :thumb:

I am glad to see the Rams sent the Birds back to Westwood with a big "L." Sounds like they have some work on the practice field and trainers room to do though. Way to go Rams!

It was a great game. Ashland is MUCH better when Thomas is in the backfield and #3 is under Center. They came out that way in the second half and ended up taking the lead. The go ahead drive for Russell Ashland committed a personal foul and (I think) unsportsmanlike conduct and spotted Russell 30 yards. Some dumb penalties on both sides of the ball. It was great to see Russell come out and play with some emotion tonight. And it was nice to see there is still some fight left in the Tomcats...even if their mascot got chased away by a bunch of rowdy Russell kids! :ylsuper: BTW, any other Russell fans notice the "flop" on the last gasp drive? :sssh:

First and foremost I believe it starts with the junior/pee wee football programs, especially in smaller communities. Russell has been an extremely successful program over the years because of the commitment to their JFL program and Raceland is the same way. The kids learn the fundamentals of playing the game and they start learning the systems in place in high school. Secondly it takes the dedication of the school to support it's football program and create a culture of positivity around the program. Teams can't worry about money for equipment, having a good stadium/field, etc. and be sucessful, they need to know the school is behind them. Thirdly it takes the support of the parents on the team creating a positive booster atmosphere and giving their support to the Coaches. Kids look to their parents, even as teens, as role models and if parents don't support the program that will trickle down. I believe this is starting to be the case in Ashland and it is becoming evident on the field and on the sidelines. Finally it takes a community to come out and get behind a program. You can't go anywhere in Greenup or Boyd County without seeing a maroon and white "A", maroon and gold "R", red and white "BC", green "G", or an orange and black "R" on at least every 5th or 6th car. It means something to the kids and the school when the community rallies around the team, supports them financially, and fills the stands. A positive community attitude towards the program is a must. I think those are the four basic traits you find in scholastic sports programs who are successful year in and out.

Ditto that. I am just saying a better team can use that momentum and possibly do some damage. Nothing sets the tone of the game like a 3 and out or big defensive play on the first series. Russell has done that textbook style over the last several years, seems like they come out a little flat. Of course after that? It's like a train rolling through. :thumb:

Ashland better do something or it could get ugly next week. This is another textbook Ohio vs, Kentucky comparison game as well. I picked Ironton to win based simply on that, but I didn't imagine they would blow them out. Ashland starts off 0-3 all in Putnam and now has to go into the "Hank" trying to get their first win. Tough road ahead for the Tomcats.
